Pay It Forward in Sefton with acts of kindness

Sefton’s Year of Friendship has shone a light on the selfless way the borough’s residents support each other.

Sefton’s Council for Voluntary Services (CVS) is calling on that community spirit to lead Sefton’s contribution to Pay It Forward Day on April 28. The theme this year is “Our Gift to You, Your Gift to Give”.

Sefton CVS are hosting two Year of Friendship themed community events at Strand By Me in Bootle Strand Shopping Centre, Friday, April 26, 10am – 1pm and Southport Community Centre, Saturday, April 27, 11am – 4pm. Each event will see volunteers come together, share ideas, stories and create friendship bracelets to mark the occasion.

Building on the success of last year’s Pay It Forward Day, Sefton CVS and Sefton Council are asking residents to let them know about any events, activities or simple acts of kindness they are performing so they can spread the word throughout the borough.

In the spirit of the day, Sefton CVS are asking individuals and organisations to take part in and organise events across the weekend from Thursday April 25 – Sunday, April 28.

Activities may include:

  • A community meal
  • Sowing a Wild flower meadow
  • Giving books away
  • Giving away planters and bulbs
  • A free music concert
  • Giving away bunches of flowers
  • Buying a coffee for a stranger
  • Free cakes in the cafe
  • Free car wash
  • Paying for someone’s parking

To make Pay It Forward Day a special day in Sefton, let Sefton CVS know your 0rganisation’s plans by email or alternatively, you can tag both Sefton CVS and Sefton Council on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram using #PayItForwardSefton

We want your ideas for our Borough of Culture 2020 programme

Sefton will be named Liverpool City Region’s Borough of Culture in 2020 and wants ideas from communities, partners and businesses to ensure next year’s programme reflects the cultural diversity of the borough.

As Sefton always prides itself on being a borough of storytellers, the 2020 cultural programme will focus on stories about its people, places, history and the future.

Planning is well underway for 2020 and Sefton Council, who is providing the framework to connect these stories, events, activities and initiatives together, is urging people to get in touch with their ideas.

The aim is to build on the great things that already happen in Sefton and combine exciting existing events with some new ones, whilst supporting the promotion of those planned by partners and communities.

Executive Director Stephen Watson, Sefton’s project sponsor for Borough of Culture 2020 status, said: “We’ve already started talking to our communities and partners and we’re hearing some great ideas, which is also giving us a better understanding about what culture means to them.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase and build on Sefton’s already distinct cultural offer and we want to develop a programme that is focused on stories about us, by us, for us – ultimately with the aim of delivering positive outcomes for the whole borough.

“We’re open to new ideas and would love to hear them. With your help, we will ensure our programme is inclusive to all and will engender connectivity, pride and belonging across the borough.”

Anyone who would like to submit an idea can email BOC2020@sefton.gov.uk.  Deadline is Friday May 17.

For more information about Sefton’s offer as an exciting place to live, work, visit and invest in, log onto www.sefton.gov.uk or www.mysefton.co.uk.

The Borough of Culture initiative is part of the Liverpool City Region’s 1% for Culture Programme, which involves a commitment from the LCR to spend the equivalent of 1% of its annual £30m devolution funding from government to support cultural activities. Wirral currently holds the status for 2019.

The five key principles that the LCR will expect Sefton to demonstrate during its year are: a focus on children and young people; positive outcomes; community participation; showcases the distinctiveness of Sefton; and leaves a legacy for cultural infrastructure.

Sefton’s Festival of Golf tees off in style!

Sefton Council is hosting a fabulous festival of golf to coincide with the British Masters tournament at Hillside Golf Club.

As the borough prepares to welcome thousands of golf fans for the British Masters tournament, a week of golfing activities is taking place at Southport Golf Links and Bootle Golf Course from May 4-12.

The festival is to appeal to both beginners and existing golfers, of all ages and ability, and is supported by the European Tour and former Southport Golf Links junior member, Tommy Fleetwood.

Tommy, a Ryder Cup winner, is hosting the British Masters and his career began nearly 20 years ago at Sefton Council’s Municipal Golf Course on Park Road West, Southport.

Included in the festival is free junior golf, foot and disc golf, free coaching and a longest putt challenge.

All of this activity will centre on Southport Golf Links but the free junior golf will also run at Bootle Golf Course during the week.

There is also the unique opportunity for individuals to get involved in the lonely hearts golf where golfers can find a partner to play a round with. All the fun competitions will be free to enter and this includes a 3-club challenge with some excellent prizes too.

Mark Shaw, Sefton Council’s Green Sefton manager, said: “As Sefton prepares to welcome thousands of visitors to the British Masters in May, we thought we would celebrate this through our own festival.

“Southport Golf Links will be a hive of activity from May 4-12 and the course, hailed as one of the very best Municipal courses in the country, has helped produce top talent in Tommy Fleetwood, Lee Slattery and Matthew Baldwin.

“All three were members of Park Golf Club who use Southport Municipal as their course in an ongoing partnership with Sefton Council and the trio are supporting our festival as well.

“Through our own festival it’s a chance for anyone interested in the game to get involved no matter how old or your ability. There really is something for everyone with events taking place in Bootle as well.

“We want the British Masters and our own festival to leave a legacy especially amongst younger people, boys and girls, to enjoy this fabulous sport.”

The British Masters hosted by Tommy Fleetwood will mark the European Tour’s first visit to Hillside since 1982 when Tony Jacklin won the Sun Alliance PGA Championship – the precursor to the BMW PGA Championship – beating his fellow Ryder Cup Captain Bernhard Langer in a play-off.

Tickets are still available for the British Masters at Hillside Golf Club and for more information visit: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/betfred-british-masters-hosted-by-tommy-fleetwood-2019-tickets-52081823135

How a shared love of animals is helping people connect during Year of Friendship

Anyone who has cared for an animal knows the difference they can make to our lives, whether it’s by bringing us companionship, helping us get out in to the great outdoors more or encouraging us to connect with others.

Throughout the Year of Friendship 2019, Sefton Council and its partners are celebrating groups, individuals and organisations who help foster friendship throughout the borough.

For April, we are shining a light on some of the special relationships that exist between animals and humans across Sefton, and those who benefit from having animal companions in their lives.

Freshfields Animal Rescue is a beloved local charity based in Ince Blundell that cares for abandoned, abused and unwanted domestic and small farm animals, along with sick and injured wildlife. Each year they rescue and rehabilitate hundreds of animals thanks to generous donations from the public and the dedicated work of a committed team of staff and volunteers.

Yet as well as helping their residents flourish and recover, the work they carry out has helped build a network of like-mined volunteers who have bonded over a shared love of animals and who enjoy a “tight-knit” camaraderie of their own.

Naomi Clarke, Community Fundraiser at Freshfields Animal Rescue, said: “It’s well document that with regards to mental health and wellbeing there is a unanimous friendship between animals and humans.

“The friendships that animals bring are so worthwhile. I see the relationships all the time between people and animals here at Freshfields – staff have adopted animals and the difference it’s made to both the animal and the person is huge.

“We’ve got a lot of volunteers that have a real camaraderie between them too. They embrace friendship, they do a lot of things together and they encourage other people to join in as well. They bring their own network of people to come and take part.

“It’s a real tight knit of people at Freshfields and when you see some of the cases that come in and some of the situations that arise, it shows how valuable those friendships are. People here are all striving for the same good – everything we do here is for the benefit of the animals, and that is one thing that everybody’s got in common.”

There are many ways you can get involved with Freshfields Animal Rescue, from fundraising to fostering and helping out at the centre. It’s a brilliant opportunity to make new friends, both human and furry, so why not check out their website and see how you can get involved: https://www.freshfields.org.uk/get-involved/

Freshfields Animal Rescue also has a number of events coming up this year, including a sponsored firewalk and a sponsored abseil down Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, and are looking for people to take part.
