Trio of buildings to light up for a Nightingale’s Song!

Three prominent buildings in Sefton will be lit up in a unique light extravaganza as part of
Sefton’s Borough of Culture year.

Waterloo and Bootle Town Halls along with The Atkinson in Southport will be the backdrop over 3
nights (March 13-15) as A Nightingale’s Song is projected on to them.

A trilogy of large-scale video projections will be created on consecutive nights, each a chapter in an
interwoven story that connects the coastal towns and people together by international projection
artists, Illuminos.

A Nightingale’s Song is a tale of magic and wonder, of myths and wondrous creatures, spectacular
nature, of ships and sailing, of peoples past and present that captures the history of Sefton.

The first part of the trilogy will be projected onto Waterloo Town Hall on Friday, March 13, followed
by the second part on the side of Bootle Town Hall on Saturday, March 14. The final chapter will be
screened on The Atkinson building in Southport on Sunday, March 15. All shows are free and set to
start at 8pm each evening.

Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Council’s main sponsor for the Borough of Culture year, said: “I really
cannot wait for A Nightingale’s Song to light up these three iconic buildings in the borough.

“We are blessed with some spectacular civic buildings and these will be used to full effect to project
a story over three days about Sefton’s amazing history.

“We want people to try and attend all three shows at the three different locations so they can witness
the story in its entirety as part of our Borough of Culture year.

“We are expecting large crowds from across the City Region at these events so please get there
early and consider using public transport.”

The Borough of Culture (BoC) title is awarded by the Liverpool City Region’s Combined Authority to
one of its six local authorities (Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and Wirral) on a
rotating, annual basis. Sefton has the prestigious honour for 2020.

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, said: “I’ve always said that our region is the
UK’s culture capital, and I launched Borough of Culture to allow each of our six districts to showcasetheir own unique cultural highlights.

“I think that A Nightingale’s Song will be a fantastic start to what I’m sure will be a brilliant year for
Sefton. I can’t wait to see it!”

Rob Vale from Illuminos added: “Working with local experts and knowledge, the projections are
anchored through following the journey of the Natterjack Toad – the endangered amphibian who
lives in the Sefton dunes. Known as the Birkdale Nightingale because of its extraordinary night time
song, it becomes the character we follow, symbolising the growth and transition through ever
changing stages of egg, tadpole, and toad – three chapters set across the three locations.

“The journey will take us through time and space, on boats and over dunes, through war time and
summer sandcastles. Join us for these beautiful celebratory events built around storytelling, with
children and families in mind, but inspiring for all.”

Bootle firm secures letting at new Mersey Reach development

A Bootle-based precision blade manufacturer has secured a 22,000 sq ft letting at the new Mersey Reach development on Dunnings Bridge Road.

Hardy UK, currently based on Fernhill Road in Bootle, designs and manufactures precision blades for the global leather industry.

Work started on the Mersey Reach development in December and Hardy is scheduled to relocate to their new premises by August 2020.

Mersey Reach is supported by Sefton Council’s business growth team, InvestSefton, and employment and training opportunities will be given to nearby residents through the Sefton@Work programme.

Situated on a 13.5-acre site, the logistics park is strategically located on a prominent gateway route into the docks, with fast access to the M57 and M58.

Once complete, the Mersey Reach logistics park will create up to 350 jobs and is estimated to have a ÂŁ5.5m positive impact on the area.

MerseyReach is being developed by the Warrington office of industrial developer and asset manager Chancerygate.

Chancerygate Development Director and Head of the company’s Warrington office, Mike Walker, said: “It is excellent to welcome a long-established local business such as Hardy UK to Mersey Reach. This is the area’s first new, multi-unit logistics park to be built for years. We are pleased to work closely with Sefton Council and other stakeholders to bring more business, jobs and other opportunities to the area.”

Councillor Marion Atkinson, Sefton Council cabinet member for regeneration and skills, said: “We are delighted with the training and employment opportunities the new Mersey Reach development will bring our residents. Plans to boost Sefton’s golfing offer approved by Sefton Council

Sefton is to enhance its golf offer with the addition of two new driving ranges.

New driving range facilities will be constructed at Sefton’s two municipal sites at Bootle Golf Course and Southport Golf Links, broadening the accessibility and affordability of the game in the region.

Work will start on a new driving range at Bootle Golf Course in the spring of this year, with the facility expected to be completed during summer 2020. This follows a consultation in Autumn 2019 with local residents and golf players who highlighted the importance of new practice facilities and investment in course infrastructure.

Phase 2 of the project will see a new facility at Southport Golf Links. This has been approved in principle, subject to a consultation in the coming months.

The ranges will both include a dedicated coaching bay, with the floodlit facilities enabling participants to play into the evening on a ‘pay as you play’ basis.

Sefton Council’s Cabinet formally approved plans to invest £536,360 in the new facilities.

The driving ranges are forecast to generate a surplus of over ÂŁ1m over a 10-year period.

Round and membership prices at both courses have been held at last year’s fees for 2020, with a wider selection of food and drinks available at the on-site golf shops. All existing facilities will remain open to members and non-members during any works.

Plans are also in development to upgrade the buildings at both golf courses to offer improved changing facilities, shop, hospitality and food and drink offerings.

Sefton Council is hoping to attract more young golfers to the two courses and will be offering free-play to under 16s for a period later in 2020.

Cllr Ian Moncur, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “Driving ranges are a great facility for people to learn, practise and play golf. The new driving ranges will enhance Sefton’s municipal courses, which provide affordable, good quality facilities for people to enjoy the sport. The project supports Sefton Council’s 2030 Vision and will encourage new people young and old to participate in golf. The surplus the driving ranges are forecast to generate will enable the Council to invest further in front-line services.”

Love of film shines through as community cinema receives BAFTA

A cinema that has shaped the love of the movies for local film goers for decades, was recently recognised by BAFTA for its role using the silver screen to bring communities together.Plaza Community Cinema in Waterloo recently won a BAFTA

Janet and Martin Fol, who operate the Plaza Community Cinema, collected the second ever For the Love of Film award for their work at the community owned venue – the award recognises those who go above and beyond for the love of cinema.

At a time when a family trip to the flicks is becoming increasingly expensive, the Plaza gives cinema goers the chance to see the latest blockbusters, classic films and special screenings in a way that’s kind on your pocket. Where else can an adult and child enjoy the latest big movie for under ÂŁ9?

With the focus very much on community, the team at Plaza, many of whom are volunteers, offer special screenings for autism, dementia and disabled audiences.

The beloved local venue offers an excellent training resource young people age 13-19, with local schools and volunteer groups benefiting from a series of educational programmes.

Its grand opening halted by the outbreak of World War 2 in 1939, the Plaza was nearly lost to developers in the 1990s, it was rescued following a petition organised by the local community and is now a thriving must-do for local film lovers and visitors alike.

When you next visit the Plaza, you will be greeted by the warm, friendly staff, many of whom are volunteers, but you will also be walking into a living piece of local history recognised by BAFTA no less.
