Protecting children’s rights in the workplace

Sefton Council is reminding businesses that employ children aged between 13 and 16 years old that they need permits to comply with employment laws. These permits are free of charge from the Local Council that the place of employment resides.

No child aged below 13 is allowed to work in England unless they are taking part in a performance and have a performance licence.

There is a National Awareness Campaign which takes place across the country this April, where councils will be reminding employers that children aged between 13 and 16 years old require Work Permits to enable them to undertake part-time work.

The welfare of children is paramount and if they are taking part in part-time work opportunities, we need to ensure that their needs are being met by employers and that children who do work are doing so safely.

During next month’s Child Employment fortnight, County Council officers will be visiting places of businesses across the borough during the fortnight to make sure that young people in part-time jobs are safe and working legally.

Under byelaws regulating the Employment of Children and Street Trading by persons aged under 18 years old, which was introduced over 50 years ago, teenagers aged between 13 and 16 years old can take part in light work in a number of different areas including: shop work, office work and working in cafes, restaurants, car washing and riding stables.

No child may be employed before 7.00 am or after 7.00 pm on any day.Ā  No child may work for more than 4 hours without a break of at least 1 hour and no child can work for more than 2 hours on a Sunday between the hours of 7.00 am and 7.00 pm.

During term time, no child can be employed for more than 12 hours per week and there are also other guidelines for the number of weekends and hours during holiday times that children can work.

LCR Pride Foundation to lead Liverpool City Region bid for Gay Games 2026

LCR Pride Foundation has revealed its intention to bid for the Liverpool City Region to host the 2026 Gay Games, a move that has been backed by the region’s Metro Mayor, Steve Rotheram.

The news also comes alongside the announcement of British Paralympian, Claire Harvey MBE, as its newest Patron. Recognised as a world leader in diversity and inclusion and culture, the former LJMU student is now the Director of Culture and Inclusion for EDIT Development.

The Gay Games is a worldwide sport and cultural event that takes place every four years, welcoming more than 10,000 athletes competing in 30+ sports. It attracts tens of thousands of spectators who also attend to take part in the event’s extensive cultural programme, which includes music, visual arts and mass participation events such as fun runs.

Speaking of the announcement of the intention to submit a big for the 2026 Gay Games next year, LCR Pride Foundation Co-Chair, Andi Herring, said: ā€œThe Gay Games is a globally recognised sporting and cultural event that empowers and celebrates the LGBT+ community, as well as supporting local regeneration in its host cities.

ā€œThe Liverpool City Region has a proven record for delivering large-scale, world-class sport and cultural events, as last year’s wildly successful Liverpool 2018 programme demonstrated.

ā€œWe believe that this experience, combined with the foundation’s commitment to collaborative working and making the city region the most LGBT+ friendly in the UK, makes Liverpool City Region the perfect host city for the 2026 games.

ā€œOur bid as the Liverpool City Region will encourage relationship building with local authorities, community groups and sports organisations throughout the six boroughs, as we work together towards a unified goal.ā€

Co-Chair, John Bird, added: ā€œWelcoming Claire Harvey MBE as a Patron as we embark on this journey will only strengthen our offer to the Federation of Gay Games. We are extremely grateful for her support and recognise how invaluable her expertise will be to creating a bid that we believe could bring the 2026 games to our region.ā€

To date, only Brisbane in Australia has highlighted its intention to bid for the 2026 Gay Games. Bids will be submitted in 2020 and the successful city will be announced by the event’s sanctioning body, the Federation of Gay Games, at its Annual General Meeting in Hong Kong in 2021.

Speaking in support of the bid, Steve Rotheram, Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, said:

ā€œDiversity, respect, equality, and solidarity for all are the foundation blocks on which the Games are built, and they are values we share.

ā€œOur region is well accustomed to holding sporting events that attract a worldwide audience.Ā Ā  The Merseyside Derby, Rugby Super League, The Open and the Grand National are regular features in our sporting calendar but never before have we held anything on the scale of the Gay Games.

ā€œI relish the opportunity to build on our strong track record of supporting LGBT+ rights, empowering communities and creating lasting social change. And that is why I am proud to support this bid.ā€

New LCR Pride Foundation Patron, Claire Harvey MBE, said: ā€œBecoming a Patron of the LCR Pride Foundation as they make this exciting announcement is incredibly special for me, not least because I attended university here.

ā€œI know first-hand the power and benefit that sport can have on a person’s life and on a community. Sport is a vehicle that can bring people together and bridge differences to start a culture change.

ā€œI am backing this bid to enable more people to see the breadth and depth of LGBT+ people who already love sport, as well encouraging more people from the community to access its benefits. I also want to showcase the Liverpool City Region as a diverse and inclusive LGBT+ friendly area, with a strong and positive LGBT+ community.

ā€œOne of the great things about being part of London 2012 was the ability to break down fears and myths about disability and, as a participant, feeling like a member of a huge family. I am keen to ensure Liverpool has the opportunity to do the same for Gay Games.ā€

Police issue warning about shop’s hacked Instagram page

PoliceĀ are investigating a report the social media account of a clothes store in Aintree has been compromised and are urging customers to be vigilant.

A report was received that the Instagram account of the Haus of Harlow store on Warbreck Avenue, Aintree had been hacked and was being used to receive cash purportedly in exchange for goods that would then be collected from the store. This was done without the store’s knowledge and the goods were not available for collection.

Detective Inspector Holly Chance, from the Merseyside Police Economic Interventions Team, said: “We believe the social media account was compromised and while efforts are currently being made to close it down, we would urge people to avoid any correspondence on Instagram page with the profile page ‘harlowhaus1_’ for the time being. Instead, all contact with the store should be doneĀ in person.

“This offence has left members of the public out of pocket and has caused significant distress to the shop owner who has been left trying to explain the situation to those disappointed customers, all while trying to run a legitimate business and make an honest living.

“We are appealing to anyone with information about the incident to contact police so that we can bring the offender to justice.”

If you have been affected by this incident please report the matter to ActionFraud, the UK centre for reporting fraud or cyber crime offences and state that your case is linked to incident NFRC181002590126. Action Fraud can be contacted on 0300 123 2040 or viaĀ https://www.actionfraud.police.uk.
