Exclusive Formby home wins top building and design award

An exclusive property in Formby has been named as the Best Individual New Home in the LABC North West Building Excellence Awards.

Firwood Hall in Formby took the honours at a prestigious awards ceremony held at the Emirates, Old Trafford in Manchester.

The LABC Building Excellence Awards showcase buildings and design teams that have faced complex technical or construction issues and building site constraints. The awards also celebrate innovative, smart solutions across the North West region of England.

Sefton Council’s Building Control team advised over compliance with the building regulations during construction of the property, which is owned by Mike McComb.

The contractors Creative Design & Build (North West) Ltd and the Project Architects RAL Architect Ltd were all also recognised.

Stuart Barnes, Sefton Council’s Head of Economic Growth and Housing, said: “This has been a long term, unique and complex project, and taken its time to reach delivery.

“During this period, there have been a number of design alterations, client led and technical, that have required a collaborative approach between all parties, including the Council’s Building Control team.

“The results of the ambition of the land owner and the quality of the design and execution have rightly been recognised, and the LABC award is a worthy accolade.”

Paul Everall CBE, Chief Executive at LABC, added: “These awards are different. They are about quality and standards. No other building awards look at how well buildings are put together from start to finish and the skills and competencies of those who design and construct them. We are very proud of everyone involved – they show the way ahead for the industry.”

Rob Anderson, from RAL Architects, said: “Delivering a home of this quality requires a collaborative effort between architect, builder and the local authority with all parties appreciating the end goal but, above all it requires a client with vision who is willing to put significant trust in the project team.

“RAL are extremely pleased with the end result and are delighted to have the efforts of all involved recognised with an LABC Building Excellence Award.”

Police reveal top tips to best enjoy British Masters in Southport

The Betfred British Masters Golf tournament will be held at Hillside Golf Club in Southport from Wednesday 8th May to Sunday 12th May 2019.

Merseyside Police has been working alongside the event organisers, Sefton Council and other partners to ensure the event is an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Visitors are being reminded of some very simple steps they should take to ensure their time in Merseyside is memorable for all the right reasons.

Superintendent Mark Wiggins said: “People can help by giving themselves extra time to get to the course, arriving in good time and limiting the number of bags and other items they bring along. They should also expect to undergo the normal security checks, including bag searches. I would also advise:

• Keeping things like your mobile, wallet, purse or handbag secure and on your person at all times
• If travelling in by car, use a designated car park but still do not leave any valuables on display or hidden in obvious places
• Make use of your car alarm, immobiliser and remember to close your windows
• Be aware of the potential, as with any sporting event, for forged tickets. If you get offered a ticket at a price that is too good to be true then it probably is, and will be a fake
• Don’t carry large amounts of cash around and use the on-course ATMs
• If out in any of our town or city centres after the day’s golf, please watch how much you drink, stick together with your friends, and keep your mobile phones, cash and personal possessions safe
• Finally, if you need the police for any reason, please approach any officers who will be on duty at the course and in the Southport area, or call 101.

“We constantly review our approach to supporting our partners in delivering any large-scale public event. We will be using a variety of tactics, both highly visible and covert, using police officers and staff alongside other resources such as dogs, firearms and CCTV cameras. We want to reassure communities that we are working together to keep everyone safe.

“We continue to call on the public to be vigilant and to report anything that they deem to be suspicious immediately by telling a police officer, or by calling 101 or 999 in an emergency or by calling the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321.

Wildflower meadows, literary festivals and more join the #SeftonCrowd!

The first round of projects on Sefton’s very own crowdfunding platform have now launched.

Seven ventures are now live on the SeftonCrowd – an online platform which allows volunteers and community groups to gain the financial support of people across the borough and further afield so they can create life changing projects.

Projects, ranging from the creation of wildflower meadows, a Children’s Literary Festival and a wheelchair-accessible horseback nature trail are now open to receive backing from residents and businesses in Sefton.

They are:

Empower Our Flowers (The Atkinson, Southport)
Crosby Youth Cafe (The Mix, Crosby)
Stafford Moreton Way Wildflower Meadow (Maghull Town Council, Maghull)
Bees, Blooms & Butterflies (Rimrose Valley Friends, Seaforth)
Lean, Grow Share (Regenerus, Bootle)
Bootle Children’s Literary Festival (Ykids, Bootle)
Horseback nature trail (Shy Lowen Sanctuary, Sefton)

Anyone can support a project for as little at £2 and funding may also be available via Sefton Council’s Community Transition Fund and other national funding pots.

Tanya Wilcock, Sefton Council’s Head of Communities, said: “We could not be more delighted with the reception of our SeftonCrowd initiative and the first round of projects which are now open for support.

“Throughout the creation of SeftonCrowd we wanted to encourage the creation of community projects which make a huge difference to our brilliant borough and we feel that these projects from across the borough really reflect our hopes.

“I would encourage as many people as possible to visit the SeftonCrowd website and give their support to those projects which resonate the most with them.”

Pay It Forward in Sefton with acts of kindness

Sefton’s Year of Friendship has shone a light on the selfless way the borough’s residents support each other.

Sefton’s Council for Voluntary Services (CVS) is calling on that community spirit to lead Sefton’s contribution to Pay It Forward Day on April 28. The theme this year is “Our Gift to You, Your Gift to Give”.

Sefton CVS are hosting two Year of Friendship themed community events at Strand By Me in Bootle Strand Shopping Centre, Friday, April 26, 10am – 1pm and Southport Community Centre, Saturday, April 27, 11am – 4pm. Each event will see volunteers come together, share ideas, stories and create friendship bracelets to mark the occasion.

Building on the success of last year’s Pay It Forward Day, Sefton CVS and Sefton Council are asking residents to let them know about any events, activities or simple acts of kindness they are performing so they can spread the word throughout the borough.

In the spirit of the day, Sefton CVS are asking individuals and organisations to take part in and organise events across the weekend from Thursday April 25 – Sunday, April 28.

Activities may include:
