The NHS is here for you this Bank Holiday Monday

Monday 19 September has been designated a bank holiday following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, meaning some healthcare services such as GP practices will close and pharmacies may change their opening hours.

NHS professionals in Sefton are sharing information on how to access healthcare support and plan ahead for the bank holiday.

Think 111 first

Anyone who needs healthcare support or advice, which is not an emergency, is encouraged to ‘think 111 first’ and use the NHS 111 online service: www.111.nhs.uk. The 111 online service offers patients quick advice and the best options for getting the care they need, which can include getting a call back from a trained clinician or nurse, booking them an appointment in A&E, or providing advice on how to help them recover.

NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, even on bank holidays, and can also be accessed by phone by calling 111. NHS 111 online is not suitable for under fives.

111.nhs.uk can help you with:

  • where to get help for your symptoms, if you’re not sure what to do
  • how to find general health information and advice
  • where to get an emergency supply of your prescribed medicine
  • how to get a repeat prescription
  • get emergency dental appointments

Planning your medication and seeking healthcare advice

To get medication or healthcare advice from a pharmacist in Sefton, residents can search ‘find a pharmacy NHS’ online or visit: www.nhs.uk/service-search/pharmacy/find-a-pharmacy to find an open pharmacy nearby. The NHS advises to phone ahead before travelling to a pharmacy, as opening times may be subject to change.

Residents should also plan ahead for any medication they need and make sure they have enough supply of prescription medications ahead of the weekend and bank holiday Monday.

Patients in Sefton needing a GP appointment over the weekend and bank holiday can book through the GP Extra service in south Sefton, which is running from 10am-1pm each day, or through the 7 Day GP Service in Southport and Formby, which is running from 9am-12pm on Saturday and Sunday and 5pm-9pm bank holiday Monday.

Appointments for these services must be pre-booked through the patient’s usual GP practice, so patients are advised to call their practice before they close on Friday 16 September to arrange this.

Patients who require an urgent GP appointment should contact NHS 111 either via the online service or by calling 111, where they will be assessed and referred to a suitable clinician where appropriate.

COVID-19 vaccinations

Anyone who has booked a COVID-19 autumn booster vaccination for Monday 19 September will receive a text message reminder 48 hours before their appointment. Anyone who would rather not attend on this date will be given the option of rescheduling their appointment.

Some vaccination sites may have cancelled appointments for the day, so any affected patients will receive a cancellation notice and be given the opportunity to re-book a new appointment.

Anyone who is eligible for an autumn booster jab or who has missed any of their other COVID-19 vaccinations can book an appointment online at: www.nhs.uk/covid-vaccination or find a walk-in vaccination site nearby here: www.nhs.uk/service-search/find-a-walk-in-coronavirus-covid-19-vaccination-site

Help from a dentist

Anyone needing urgent dental treatment during the bank holiday is asked to contact their regular dentist if possible. Any residents who do not have a dentist can use NHS 111 online for information about the local out of hours service, or call the out of hours dental advice line for Cheshire and Merseyside on 0161 476 9651, between 8am-10pm every day.

Southport Beach Car Park Closure

Southport beach car park remains closed following recent high tides. The car park is currently unsuitable for parking due to a layer of wet silty mud that could cause vehicles to get stuck or lose control.

We are reviewing the car park on a daily basis, and as soon as conditions become safe, we will reopen the beach car park. The latest update on beach car parking can be found at: https://www.sefton.gov.uk/beachcarparking

Ainsdale beach car park remains open and will be throughout the weekend, including the bank holiday Monday 19th September.

Green Waste Collection Update – Monday 19th September

Due to the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Monday 19th September, green waste collections normally scheduled for that day will be rescheduled for a later date.

We will update those within the areas affected by the change with an alternative collection date in due course.

We would like to thank residents for their understanding and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

All other scheduled collections from Tuesday 20th September onwards remain unaffected.

Keep Warm Keep Well event held in Bootle with advice and help for the community

Sefton Council hosted a Keep Warm, Keep Well event at Bootle Cricket Club on Monday 12th September as part of its commitment to helping vulnerable people get through winter. The event was very popular, with upwards of 100 people attending.

Decorative Information stands provided advice and contacts for keeping well and managing finances. Organisations present included Living Well Sefton, who provided advice on staying healthy, Sefton O.P.E.R.A, who provided information and complimentary massages, and The Indy Pantry, a food union offering food for the community. Additionally, there was free advice on paying rent and council tax, and how to efficiently use energy to reduce energy bills. There was also blood pressure checks, chair-based exercises, and free goody bags.

DecorativeAnother Keep Warm, Keep Well event is being held at the Atkinson Centre in Southport on Monday, 10th October. The event was originally planned to take place on Monday, 19th September, but was rescheduled following the announcement of the day becoming a bank holiday for the Queen’s funeral.

Sefton Council recognises many households will struggle to pay their bills this winter due to the cost-of-living crisis. Autumn’s expected rise in the energy price cap to £3,554 will leave average household bills 80 per cent higher going into the colder months when energy use soars. Many vulnerable people will be hit hard, including older people and those in ill-health, living in energy inefficient homes that are difficult and expensive to heat.

Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing said:

“With their gas and electricity bills set to rocket and inflation rising to the highest rate in 40 years, households and business across Sefton will be wondering just how they are going to get through the coming winter and beyond.

“While Sefton Council has no magic solutions and like councils across the UK is hit by the same rises in costs to run its operations and services, it is vital we recognise people’s plight and work with our partners to provide what support and advice we can.”

People can find out more information about the events by contacting Sefton Opera on 0151 330 0479 or 07452 867 648 admin@seftonopera.org.uk.

Anyone concerned about keeping warm at home should contact Sefton’s Affordable Warmth Team on 0151 934 2222.

Sefton’s Town Halls to light up in tribute to Her Majesty

Both Southport and Bootle Town Hall will light up in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II.

The civic buildings will be illuminated from dusk on Monday, September 12th and remain illuminated for eight nights – this is to mark the UK wide period of mourning for Her Majesty’s state funeral on September 19.

Southport and Bootle Town Halls join a host of other iconic buildings across the Liverpool City Region, which will be illuminated in a regal purple.

The illumination follows the official and historic Reading of the Proclamations, carried out by the Mayor of Sefton Cllr Clare Carragher, outside Southport and Bootle Town Halls on Sunday which proclaimed the passing of the crown to King Charles III.

Books of condolence are available at Bootle Town Hall and the Atkinson, Southport for people to sign and remember Her Majesty. Books of Condolence will be collated and archived.

An online book of remembrance has also been made available by Buckingham Palace and will soon be available via the Sefton Council website www.sefton.gov.uk.

For Sefton residents who cannot access the online book of remembrance, printed Condolence Cards will be available from all Sefton Libraries and Family Wellbeing Centres. These can be filled in by hand and either returned to one of the libraries or family wellbeing centres or can be posted back to either Southport or Bootle Town Halls. These cards will be collated and stored in Council archives.

Areas outside Bootle Town Hall and the Town Hall Gardens on Lord Street, Southport have been designated as places where residents can leave floral tributes in memory of Her Majesty.

During the mourning period and state funeral, some of the Mayor of Sefton’s engagements may be cancelled as a mark of respect. Other engagements during this period may begin with a period of silence to honour the Queen’s passing.

Floral tributes at both Southport and Bootle will remain in place until after the state funeral. Residents are asked to remove all plastic packaging before laying flowers. These will then be sensitively collected and disposed of in an appropriate fashion.
