Official Statement: Her Majesty the Queen 1926-2022

Sefton Council has expressed great sadness following the death of Her Majesty the Queen.

Books of condolence will be available at Bootle Town Hall and the Atkinson, Southport for people to sign and remember the monarch who sadly died on 8thĀ September. Books of Condolence will be collated and archived.

An online book of remembrance has also been made available by Buckingham Palace and will soon be available via the Sefton Council websiteĀ www.sefton.gov.uk

For Sefton residents who cannot access the online book of remembrance, printed Condolence Cards will be available from all Sefton Libraries and Family Wellbeing Centres. These can be filled in by hand and either returned to one of the libraries or family wellbeing centres or can be posted back to either Southport or Bootle Town Halls.Ā  These cards will be collated and stored in Council archives.

As a mark of respect, all flags at Council buildings and assets across the borough will be lowered to half-mast as Sefton pays tribute to Her Majesty the Queen.

Areas outside Bootle Town Hall and the Princess Diana Memorial Gardens on Lord Street, Southport have been designated as places where residents can leave floral tributes in memory of Her Majesty the Queen. Residents are asked to remove plastic packaging before laying flowers to keep tributes compostable, and to avoid leaving non-floral tributes, such as soft toys.

Both Bootle Town Hall and The Atkinson in Southport will be open from Friday 9thĀ September between 09:00 and 17:00 for residents and visitors to sign the books of condolence. In the event of large crowds forming, a queuing system will be in place at both buildings.

Mayor of Sefton, Cllr Clare Carragher said:

“It is with great sadness that we have announced the death of Her Majesty the Queen.

“There will be an official ten days of mourning and during this period I am sure most of us will reflect on her wonderful life and think of any lasting memories of her majesty who was a great monarch and highly regarded across the world.

“While we all deal with loss differently, we can remember the Queen fondly and look back at the many occasions she visited our wonderful borough and touched the lives of so many.

“She officially made numerous visits to Sefton including a stop off in Bootle and Crosby in October 1954 and a tour of Lancashire which included a motor cavalcade driving through Southport in April, 1955.

“The Grand National at Aintree was attended by the Queen in March, 1956 and it wasn’t until December, 1962 that the Monarch returned to Bootle.

“Further visits to Bootle were recorded in June 1977 as part of her Silver Jubilee Tour and also in May 1993 when the Queen visited Bootle Town Hall commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic.

“Prior to that Her Majesty the Queen spent time in Southport in June, 1985 which included a visit to Altcar Training Camp.

“I’m sure so many people will remember these visits to Sefton with great fondness and contentment.”

During the mourning period and state funeral, some of the Mayor of Sefton’s engagements may be cancelled as a mark of respect. Other engagements during this period may begin with a period of silence to honour the Queen’s passing.

Floral tributes at both Southport and Bootle will remain in place until after the state funeral. These will then be sensitively collected and disposed of in an appropriate fashion.

Spectacular Angel Wing art installation will highlight desperate need for more local people to look after children and young people in Sefton

A selection of the 614 decorated feathersA magnificent pair of angel wings will soon adorn the entrance of Crosby Library in Waterloo, as Sefton honours foster carers and highlights the need for more people to open their homes to vulnerable children.

Six hundred & fourteen feathers

The Angel Wing art installation will be made up of 614 individually decorated paper feathers. The feathers represent the 614 children and young people from across the Borough who are currently living in care.

The fostering team has been at Sefton’s libraries getting children and adults involved by asking them to decorate or write a message on a paper feather about what family means to them.

Fostering families, school pupils and community groups are also invited to send their designs to the team.

The giant installation will begin to take shape from the Monday 3rd October at Crosby Library and will take a week to complete.

Interactive and creative

Councillor Mhairi Doyle, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Social Care said:  ā€œIt is just fantastic to be able to engage with communities with such an interactive and creative project.

ā€œSome people see angel wings as a symbol of guardianship. Therefore, this installation will not only recognise our carers, who are like guardian angels to foster children, but the 614 feathers will really put into perspective the need for more people to become foster carers.

ā€œI urge anyone who is thinking about fostering to find out more. Just imagine, one of these feathers represents a life that you can turn around.ā€

Feathers from Sefton’s schools have already begun to flock in, as children have been getting creative in the classroom.

Creating some of the 614 decorated feathersPositivity, hope and diversity

Mrs Eborall, Head of Art at Maghull High School said: ā€œA selection of KS3 students relished the opportunity to create artwork for the mural. The students wished to convey positivity, hope and diversity, which was shown through their bright and bold designs.ā€

Schools or community groups that would like to get involved in the Angel Wing Project, should email fostering@sefton.gov.uk

Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, Cllr Trish Hardy, responds to PM’s fuel bills plan

Responding to the announcement by the Prime Minister Liz Truss of her plan to help people tackle the Cost of Living Crisis, Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, said: ā€œIt’s good news that after a summer of inactivity on this front by the new Prime Minister and her predecessor that a plan that will go some way towards helping households across Sefton facing rocketing energy bills and prices in the shops rising steeply.

ā€œHowever, energy bills of Ā£2,500 will still daunting for many people across the Borough, which is why we will be continuing to try and provide support and advice to individuals and businesses through this coming winter.

ā€œTo try and help, we have put the information people might need in one place on our website at www.sefton.gov.uk/cost-of-living and have produced an easy-to-print factsheet which can be downloaded from www.sefton.gov.uk/factsheet.

ā€œIt is disappointing that while we’re told it means typical households will pay no more than Ā£2,500 a year for energy for the next two years, Ms Truss’s plan will see those same households having to pay back the extra costs in the long term, no matter what their ability to do so, while the fuel companies continue to enjoy huge windfall profits as a result of the enormous current price rises.ā€

All aboard for free health checks on the Living Well bus at Bootle Strand this week

The ā€˜Living Well’ bus returns to Sefton this week, parking up outside Bootle Strand Shopping Centre on Friday 9 September, to offer free holistic health checks and first, second or booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

DecorativeThe bus will be parked at the shopping centre’s former H. Samuels retail unit on Stanley Road from 10:30am-4pm and residents can simply turn up and hop on board throughout the day, with no need to book.

Free health checks are available for residents aged 18 and over, which include a pulse check and blood pressure check, cholesterol and blood glucose check and a BMI check.

COVID-19 vaccines will be available for anyone who has not yet been vaccinated or who has missed their second jab or first booster dose. The autumn booster is not yet available. Eligible residents who are immunosuppressed who have not yet had their spring booster can also come along to get vaccinated, and vaccines for children aged five years and older will also be available.

Jan Leonard, primary care lead for Sefton at NHS Cheshire and Merseyside said: ā€œThe Living Well bus is out and about in the community again this week, making it easier than ever to get a health check up or to grab a jab if you’ve missed any of your COVID-19 vaccinations.

ā€œIt’s also ā€˜Know Your Numbers’ week this week – a great reminder to get your blood pressure checked. Six million people in the UK have high blood pressure and don’t know it, so getting it checked on the Living Well bus makes it quick and easy to ā€˜know your numbers’ and live a healthier life.

ā€œCOVID-19 is also still very much with us, so this is a perfect opportunity to get better protected and grab any missing jabs while you’re out and about shopping, or on your lunch hour.ā€
