How to plan a street party for the 2022 Platinum Jubilee

Community spirited Sefton residents considering hosting a street party for Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee are being asked to contact the council as soon as possible.

While food, drink and tablecloths may be high on any party planner’s list for the celebrations, which take place over the long weekend of June 2nd – June 5th, many residents may not be aware of the need to formally close off their street.

There is no cost involved for this service but party organisers will need to let Sefton Council know of their plans by Wednesday, May 11th, in order for the local authority to begin official street closure proceedings.

Cllr John Fairclough, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Locality Services, said: “Sefton Council is keen that as many people as possible enjoy this once in a lifetime special occasion and for many closely knit communities, that will likely mean a street party is being planned!

“In order for street parties to take place however, Sefton Council has a legal duty to formally publish notice of any road closures where parties are taking place.

“Already we have been contacted about a number of Jubilee celebration road closures and we would urge anyone thinking of doing similar to get in touch with us as soon as possible.

“Organising a street party has many different rewards and brings together neighbours and local communities, showing off Sefton at its very best as a warm hearted and caring borough for everyone.”

It will not be possible to process any street closure requests for the Jubilee weekend after the May 11th deadline.

Organisers will need to provide their contact details, proposed closure dates and the road or section of road they wish to close.

Each application will be assessed on a case by case basis, however residents are reminded that all parties should take place away from busy roads, such as main roads and bus routes.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities has released some useful links to websites to assist organisers of street parties.

Happy Chinese New Year from all at Sefton Council

We want to wish all Sefton residents a Happy Chinese New Year. People across the world will be celebrating the arrival of New Year at the start of February 2022.

Also known as Lunar New Year or Spring festival, festivities take place for just over two weeks to mark the transition into the next year, from Tuesday 1 February until Wednesday 15 February.

There are twelve Chinese zodiac animals, each of which is linked to certain characteristics and elements, and they rotate each year. In 2022, we welcome in the Year of the Tiger. In Chinese culture, the Tiger is a valued animal because of its kind, adventurous and enthusiastic nature.

Today (Tuesday 1 Feburary) The Atkinson will illuminate in red in honour of the new year signifying good fortune and joy to everyone.

Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, Cllr Hardy, said: “I’d like to wish everyone a Happy Chinese New Year. Merseyside is home to Europe’s oldest Chinese community and the Lunar New Year is a wonderful opportunity for people to come together in celebration of our Chinese community.”

And when it does re-open it will be with a new trader on board in the form Cone Head, selling delicious desserts ranging from Cookie Dough to Warm Waffles & Ice Cream.

Chalkboard showing Conehead's menuAnother addition this week will be Thursday’s new Indoor Market in the Incredible Extravaganza space that is a chance for local traders and creators to showcase their wares. Visitors will be able to find local crafts, personalised products, candles, beauty products, jewellery, accessories, homeware, stationary, and more at the new, weekly market.

Events

Also, market customers will be treated to a brand-new calendar of events at the market, including weekly live music sessions, open mic nights, and an Easter extravaganza.

At the start of the Market’s temporary closure, Cllr Marion Atkinson, Sefton Council’s Labour Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Skills, said it would be a chance to “put the finishing touches and additional final refurbishments to the venue.”

Showcase

Announcing the new, weekly Indoor Artisan Market, Cllr Atkinson said it would provide traders with a fantastic opportunity to showcase their goods every week and for visitors to support local businesses.

Throughout February, drive-through Mobile Testing Units will be available across the Borough.
These sites are for people with symptoms – a new persistent cough, a high temperature or a loss of sense of taste or smell – and can be booked by calling 119 or visiting www.nhs.uk/coronavirus.

Walk-through test centres

In addition, four local walk-through test centres are open , providing easy access to COVID-19 tests for people who do not have access to a car and for those who have symptoms and should not travel by public transport.

The four local test centres are located at:

  • Crosby Library Car Park, Haigh Road, L22 OLQ
  • Netherton Activity Centre, Glovers Lane, L30 3TL
  • Southport Town Hall, PR8 1DA

They are open from 8am to 6pm every day,

A project which enables the voices of young people in Sefton to be heard in community life has landed two top national awards.

Members of the Sefton Young Advisors (YAs) are celebrating after one of their team was honoured as national Young Advisor of the Year, and they also collected the Community Project of the Year award for an initiative with Sefton Council.

Trained consultants

The Young Advisors are managed by Sefton Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) and are trained consultants aged from 15-23 who help organisations to understand the interests of young people, and how to get their message across to them in a more youth-friendly way.

Both awards were presented at the recent AGM and conference of the national Young Advisors charity which was held online this year due to Coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

Youth proof

They also help agencies to ‘youth proof’ the way they operate, and to attract and maintain the interest of young people in their work.

According to the award citation, Isabelle Heeley was recognised as the country’s top Young Advisor for her leadership and communication skills, her friendliness and her valuable input into the key projects the Young Advisors have worked on over the last 12 months.

Great example

Commenting on Isabella – who has recently started university in Korea whilst continuing to work as a YA remotely – Co-ordinator Georgia Ribbens said: “We have been very lucky to have Bella on our team and she has set a great example for future members!”

Meanwhile, the Young Advisors received the second award for their consultation work as part of the Sefton Your Streets initiative. This involved gathering opinions from secondary students on issues around travelling to and from school safely.

Creativity

Sefton CVS Chief Executive, Angela White OBE, said: “To win these two prestigious awards is a fantastic achievement and I would like to congratulate Isabella and the whole of the Young Advisors team on their success.

“As their work on Sefton Your Streets has again shown, they are consistently proactive and creative in finding new ways to ensure that children and young people are given more of a say in decisions that are made about services that affect them.

“I am delighted that their creativity and hard work has been recognised at national level in this way and for Sefton Council’s continued support of the YAs.”

Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, said: “The Sefton Young Advisors provide an invaluable service supporting young people across the Borough and ensuring their voices are heard.

“I would like to congratulate Isabella and the team as a whole on this national recognition and look forward to our continued work with them.”
