Tips for looking after your health in Sefton this bank holiday

However you are planning to enjoy the long weekend, the local NHS has some useful information for how to take care of yourself in case of illness or injury.

Debbie Fagan, chief nurse for NHS South Sefton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and NHS Southport and Formby CCG, said:

“Most minor illnesses and ailments can be effectively treated at home with a well stocked medicine cabinet at any time of year but remember to store things like painkillers and antihistamines safely and out of the reach of young children. Your local pharmacist will be happy to advise you about the over the counter preparations that can help.”

She added:

“If you’re out and about over the bank holiday weekend, you could add a small first aid kit to your bag or the boot of the car, just in case. Drinking plenty of water and protecting yourself from the sun are also simple ways to take care of yourself.”

Although GP practices will not be open on Monday 27 August, some local pharmacies will be open if you do need help unexpectedly. Pharmacists can give advice and suggest treatments for a range of minor illnesses and injuries. With no appointment necessary, you can get back to enjoying your weekend rather than waiting to see a GP.

You can visit the CCG websites to see which pharmacies will be open this bank holiday:

You can also find details of other services that can help if you’re unwell, including walk in centres and NHS 111, which is available anytime and for free by calling 111 and also now available online at www.111.nhs.uk.

War hero’s family found in time for Victoria Cross commemoration

Genealogy detective work by Sefton Council has successfully led to finding the long lost family of a Victoria Cross hero from Seaforth.

Earlier this year the Mayor of Sefton, Cllr Dave Robinson, asked for help to trace the family of Arthur Evans VC ahead of a special event in his honour next month.

The appeal went global with potential family links being unearthed in Australia, but for Sefton’s super sleuths, the family tree trail ended in success a little closer to home.

Now Arthur Evans VC’s first cousin, twice removed, Stuart Kirkland from Aigburth, will join Mayor Robinson and members of the Armed Forces to pay tribute to the Seaforth war hero.

Arthur evans

Mayor of Sefton, Cllr Dave Robinson, said: “Arthur is one of five local Victoria Cross recipients who are being honoured with a special commemorative stone and I am delighted that we have been able to find a family member to be part of this momentous occasion.

“Arthur’s stone will be laid at Bowersdale Park on Friday September 7. Present will also be members of the Duke of Lancaster’s (Kings) Regiment and also the Anglian Regiment, under which Arthur served.

“Arthur was a true hero and his actions on the battlefield of Etaing, France, are something of legend.”

All are welcome to attend the unveiling of the commemorative stone from 11am on September 7 at Bowersdale Park, Seaforth.

A consultation on the proposed closure of Sand Dunes nursery school, Seaforth has begun.

An 8-week consultation regarding the proposed closure of Sand Dunes nursery school, Seaforth is set to start.

Sefton Council was formally asked by the governing body at Sand Dunes to start a statutory consultation on proposals to close the nursery from August, 2019. This was agreed at a Cabinet meeting held on July 26, at Bootle Town Hall.

Sefton Council’s multi-agency consultation and engagement panel met on August 16 to outline the formal process and offer support, advice and guidance to ensure that communities have an opportunity to express their views.

The consultation will run from August 20 – October 12 and for anyone to comment on the closure proposals please visit www.sefton.gov.uk/sanddunes from Monday (August 20).

The consultation is the first part of a 5 stage statutory process Sefton Council has to follow.

Cllr John Joseph Kelly, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Safeguarding, said: “This is the start of the formal process we have to follow after being contacted by Sand Dunes Nursery to close the facility.

“The consultation opens on August 20 and we would urge as many people to take the time to look into this and let us know how they feel about the proposals.

“The nursery will reopen at the start of the next academic year in September and throughout this difficult process we will be as open and transparent as possible working closely with parents, pupils and staff at the nursery. Further meetings with staff and parents are planned in the coming weeks.”

Switch Island works may affect traffic light sequencing

Improvement works by Highways England at Switch Island may affect traffic light sequencing and have an impact on journey times.

The improvement scheme at Switch Island looks to provide additional Traffic Signals as well as  resurfacing the carriageway.

However during the resurfacing the contractor will unfortunately have to remove Traffic Signal Detection, which is used to monitor and adjust timings at the junction.

Therefore the sequencing of lights will be based on historical traffic flow information and not to live demands, until the new detectors are installed delays will occur.

The works are due to finish in January 2019.
