Sefton Council lauds Kicks partnership with Police & LFC Foundation

On Friday (26 July), Merseyside Police attended Netherton Activity Centre in partnership with LFC Foundation and Sefton Council to confirm that the Premier League Kicks programme will continue to be provided to young people in Sefton.

Football coaching events have been run at the Glovers Lane centre every Friday, and a total of 18 sessions are run every week by the charity across high-need areas in Merseyside. This will now continue into next season, restarting in September.

Matt Parish, Director of LFC Foundation, said: “We are delighted to be delivering our Premier League Kicks programme in Sefton in collaboration with Merseyside Police and Sefton Council.

“Their support means that we can continue to provide free sessions that help to inspire young people using the power of football in some of the most high-need areas.

“Our Kicks programme is a huge success and has been running across the Liverpool City Region for over 10 years. Last season (2018/19) we engaged with over 1,600 young children and young people at the 15 sessions we run weekly.”
Merseyside’s Police Commissioner Jane Kennedy said: “The Premier League Kicks programme is a wonderful initiative which keeps our young people active and engaged. It’s just what they need and they love having the opportunity to work with the LFC Foundation.

“I am proud of the effort that Merseyside Police continues to make to work alongside organisations like the LFC Foundation and Sefton Council for the benefit of our young people and I thank all those involved for the time and energy they are investing in a brighter future for the next generation.”

Merseyside Police Community Policing Sergeant Ray Mavrakakis said: “It’s great to see the success of the LFC Foundation’s programme of free sessions in Sefton, which will now continue into next season.

“This is all part of a co-ordinated national and local approach to tackling issues of serious and organised crime.

“Our local officers work closely with partners and the communities to help those who might be drawn into gangs, preventing them becoming involved in a life of crime and offering them different pathways and a more hopeful future.”
Cllr Ian Maher, Leader of Sefton Council, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our sporty youngsters in South Sefton.

“Our ongoing partnership work with Merseyside Police and the LFC Foundation works incredibly well and I am delighted to see that this wonderful programme has returned to Sefton once again.”

Bill & Bob: The Anfield Revolutionaries takes to the stage at The Atkinson

The compelling story of how Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley joined forces to transform Liverpool FC and English football is coming comes to Southport later this year.

Renowned Southport author and radio presenter John Keith will take to the stage at The Atkinson on December 6, to mark the 60th anniversary of Shankly’s appointment as manager in 1959.

He will be joined by Kop heroes Ian St John, Ian Callaghan, Chris Lawler and Phil Neal as they chart Shankly’s arrival at a club trapped in Second Division mediocrity and how he inspired a glorious revival of Liverpool fortunes.

The charismatic Scot, assisted by coach and physio Paisley, guided Liverpool to promotion, three League titles, two FA Cup triumphs – ending the club’s 73-year wait for the trophy in 1965 – a UEFA Cup success and unbroken qualification for European football.

Tickets for the one night only showing are selling out fast, proving to be a popular Christmas present for the Red in every family.

The show starts from 7:30 pm on Friday December 6 at the Atkinson Theatre, Lord Street, Southport.

Tickets are priced at £26. For more information or to book click here.

Pride, friendship and new beginnings for LGBTQ+young people

In Sefton’s Year of Friendship, LGBTQ+ young people from Sefton will show solidarity with their peers and represent the borough at the Liverpool City Region (LCR) Pride March this weekend (July 27, 11:45am).

The young people form the New Beginnings LGBTQ+ youth group are stalwarts of the march, and will this year welcome a special guest along in the form of Sefton Council CEO, Dwayne Johnson, as well as staff from the local authority.

The group, whose ages range from 11-18, will also play an active role in the newly introduced youth zone, hosted by the Michael Causer Foundation.

Formerly Liverpool Pride, it has been rebranded following the creation of the LCR Pride Foundation, extending the Pride ethos beyond Liverpool and across the entire city region, with the aim of making it the most LGBTQ+ friendly in the UK.

Dwayne Johnson, CEO at Sefton Council said:

“New Beginnings not only gives the group the chance to mix with their peers in a safe space, it also helps them to form long standing friendships as they overcome the social isolation and loneliness that can all too often be part of being an LGBTQ+ young person.

“They also benefit from the fantastic support of youth workers, who equip them with the advice and tools to stay safe, including mental health, self-esteem, sexual health, hate crime, substance abuse and more besides.

“The Pride March is the highlight of the year for New Beginnings, and our Year of Friendship is the perfect time to shine a light on them ahead of the big day. They are, and will be, a credit to Sefton.”

Cllr. Ian Maher, Cabinet Member for Communities said:

“It’s Diversity month in our Year of Friendship and a great time to champion inclusivity, which we do in Sefton throughout the year.

“It gives me optimism to see our young people representing us so well at Pride, but also real pride, no pun intended, to see our youth workers give them the space, support and platform to grow, forge bonds and develop their confidence.”

Scottish Power to close Derby Road for vital energy works

Essential energy works are set to take place on Derby Road, Bootle from July 29-August 2.

In order to carry out these works, contractors need to close the southbound section of Derby Road between Miller’s Bridge and Bankhall Street is set to be closed with diversions in place to help reduce delays.

North Liverpool Key Corridor

The essential works require Scottish Power to access underground equipment and the southbound closure has been put in place to ensure safety of workers on site.

Residents and businesses in the area have already been informed of the closure via letters.

Southbound traffic on Derby Road approaching the junction with Millers Bridge will be diverted onto Stanley Road.

Northbound traffic will remain unaffected by the works.

The works are carried out in conjunction with the wider North Liverpool Key Corridor (NLKC) scheme, which will create a modern fully ‘dualled’ road link on the A565 Great Howard Street and Derby Road between Sefton and Liverpool.

More information about this scheme can be found here.
