Bill & Bob: The Anfield Revolutionaries takes to the stage at The Atkinson

The compelling story of how Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley joined forces to transform Liverpool FC and English football is coming comes to Southport later this year.

Renowned Southport author and radio presenter John Keith will take to the stage at The Atkinson on December 6, to mark the 60th anniversary of Shankly’s appointment as manager in 1959.

He will be joined by Kop heroes Ian St John, Ian Callaghan, Chris Lawler and Phil Neal as they chart Shankly’s arrival at a club trapped in Second Division mediocrity and how he inspired a glorious revival of Liverpool fortunes.

The charismatic Scot, assisted by coach and physio Paisley, guided Liverpool to promotion, three League titles, two FA Cup triumphs – ending the club’s 73-year wait for the trophy in 1965 – a UEFA Cup success and unbroken qualification for European football.

Tickets for the one night only showing are selling out fast, proving to be a popular Christmas present for the Red in every family. 

The show starts from 7:30 pm on Friday December 6 at the Atkinson Theatre, Lord Street, Southport.

Supporting refugees in Sefton throughout Year of Friendship

This month, as part of our Year Of Friendship campaign, Sefton is celebrating diversity across our borough.

In the same month that will see the first Liverpool City Region Pride event take place in Liverpool this weekend (Saturday July 27 and Sunday July 28), extending the values and reach of Pride across the whole Liverpool City Region, we’ll be shining a light on the many groups, teams, individuals and organisations who promote diversity across Sefton.

One of the support programmes we offer here at Sefton Council are language courses for refugees living in the borough. The courses support them on their journey of learning English and also helps them integrate into our communities.

Classes are accessed through the Council’s Sefton Community Learning Service, which offers high quality adult learning programmes to help people make positive changes. Many current learners began their journey without English speaking skills and have progressed rapidly through the levels. Other courses are also available to help them improve their Mathematics and ICT skills.

Earlier this month, Sefton Library Service also announced it has been awarded almost ÂŁ240,000 in National Lottery funding to support the Human Library project. The award will provide three years funding to Sefton Libraries to offer a programme of creative activities that invite local people to meet spend time together, making their neighbourhood a better place to live.

Part of the project will be dedicated to refugees in Sefton, with a tailored programme of activities involving culturally diverse artists, poets and writers aimed at refugees aimed at helping them feel welcome at our libraries.

The Sefton Library Service team will work with the refugee community to plan activities that celebrate their cultural heritage. Planned projects include a multi-language story and rhyme time in English, Arabic and Kurdish and a women’s weekly craft club. Although the activities will be aimed at refugee and asylum seekers, anyone from the Sefton community is encouraged to join in and take part.

Sefton Council declares a Climate Change Emergency

Sefton Council has declared a ‘Climate Change Emergency’ to help protect future generations.

Councillors voted to approve the declaration at Southport Town Hall (Thursday, July 18) following a motion raised by Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regulation and Compliance. 

A declaration of a ‘Climate Emergency’ was voted through which will see the council continue it’s hard work to reduce carbon emissions and aim to be a ‘net-zero’ local authority by 2030.

It is hoped that Sefton can adapt cleaner and greener alternatives for all of its energy usage over the next 11 years.

Cllr Lappin said: “Recent extreme weather events over several years have presented severe challenges to Sefton and the Met Office clearly states that these kind of extreme weather events are significantly more likely on a planet with human-caused climate change.

“The message is loud and clear: business as usual is no longer an option.

“This is now a time for action and we will work closely with our partners across the Liverpool City Region to make sure we do all we can to tackle climate change in our beautiful borough and the world.”

Sefton’s most anticipated activity days are returning for the 2019 summer break thanks to Sefton Council’s leisure service.

Running throughout the summer holidays, Be Active fun-filled camp days have been planned across the borough from July 24 to August 30.

Brand new for this summer, LFC Foundation and Active Sefton will be delivering a 3-day summer camp at Netherton Activity Centre. Open to all abilities aged 5-12 years, the days will consist of sports drills, challenges and small-sided games with prizes to be won each day.

Keen footballers will also be impressed by the return of the Active Sefton Football Academy.

Sefton’s youngest sports stars may also be interested in Gymnastics and Yoga Camp, Summer Fun Days and the array of swimming sessions on offer.

Budding adventurers will be keen to try Active Explorers where they will have the chance to experience the outdoors through exciting fun and games.

Once again the ever-popular Dance Mash-ups will return with sessions themed around The Greatest Showman, Toy Story, Frozen, Aladdin and The Lion King.

Cllr Ian Moncur, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “The Be Active line-up just keeps getting better and better with a huge range of activities targeting a variety of abilities and age groups.

“The camp days are fun and affordable and provide a brilliant way to keep children active while they’re not in school.”

Sefton Library Service is celebrating after being awarded almost ÂŁ240,000 in National Lottery funding to support the Human Library project.

The National Lottery Community Fund, distributes money raised by National Lottery players for good causes and is the largest community funder in the UK.

The award will provide 3 years funding to Sefton Libraries to offer a programme of creative activities that invite local people to meet spend time together, and make their neighbourhood a better place to live.

It builds on a successful pilot project supported by Arts Council England.

The project will see a year-round creative programme in Bootle Crosby and Netherton libraries, volunteering opportunities, and new initiatives including creating a garden space for Bootle library, and programmes of work with young families and refugees.

Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, said: “We’re delighted that The National Lottery Community Fund has recognised our work in this way.

“Sefton’s libraries are creative, innovative and support the local community and individuals to flourish.

“Libraries are vital community spaces, with a key role in the cultural life of our borough.”

Tanya Wilcock, Sefton Council’s Head of Communities, added: “Through this project we are creating a sense of wellbeing and supporting people in their own community. People don’t just use our libraries to read books.

“Through The Human Library local people can enjoy the arts, be creative, learn skills and make friends, creating a network and community that wouldn’t have existed otherwise.”

Human Library is a project by Sefton Library Service in partnership with local arts organisation Rule of Threes. The idea behind the project is that everyone has “gifts of the heart, the hand and the head” to offer their community. Artists projects, commissions and events help local people find and share these gifts. A new season of events will begin in September.
