Foster Care Fortnight Celebrations at the Strand Shopping Centre

It’s Foster Care Fortnight (9th – 22st May), the annual celebration which allows us to raise awareness about how fostering makes a real difference to children’s lives.

The theme for this year’s Foster Care Fortnight is #FosteringCommunities and we wanted to give the local community, businesses and services who are all part of our ‘Fostering Community’, the opportunity to hear first-hand, the heart-warming and exceptional experiences from people whose lives have been touched by fostering.

To do this, our friendly team, Sefton’s Foster Carers, and young people, will be at the Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle for 4 days for you to come and chat to us. We will also be bringing some great events and activities for you to get involved in so please come along.

Wednesday 18th May – Saturday 21st May

Decorate a Feather for our Art Installation

Our #EverydayAngel campaign celebrates our foster carers, who are our #EverydayAngels and it also urges local people to think about giving a loving home to a child and become their #EverydayAngel.

In line with our campaign, we are excited to be developing an art installation which consists of hundreds of paper feathers which will make up a pair of larger angel wings. Our fostering families have already been making our individual feathers look beautiful and we are also inviting you to pop along to the Strand to decorate your own to be added to the display.

BE AN ANGEL

You can become part of our #EverydayAngel team by coming along and taking a selfie in front of the fabulous neon wing stand that we will be bringing to the Strand while we are there. Make your visit to us even more memorable by taking a snap of you and your friends to post on Instagram or Twitter.

Sefton Citizens 4 Good Scheme returns with nominations now open

Nominations are now being accepted for a major scheme that recognises Sefton residents who make a positive difference to life in their local communities.

Citizens 4 Good is a joint initiative from Sefton Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) and the Mayor of Sefton’s Office and recognises local people for good deeds, kindness and support that they provide to other members of the community.

This is the first round of nominations launched since the Coronavirus pandemic, which meant that the events were put on hold.

Anyone can make a nomination of someone they think deserves to be recognised.

People can nominate any Sefton resident who they think makes a difference the people around them. They may go that extra mile to be a great neighbour, help to organise a local community group, or something else that deserves recognition.

Mike Howlett, Senior Citizenship and Volunteering Officer for Sefton CVS, commented: “Since launching the scheme in 2017, Citizens 4 Good has recognised over 100 people for their kind acts and support for their local communities.

“Over the last two years, during the Coronavirus pandemic, we have heard so many examples of how community members have stepped up to help their neighbours. So I’m sure people won’t be short of local people to nominate.”

Shortlisted nominees will be invited to a celebration event where they will be presented with a certificate by the Mayor of Sefton, Cllr Clare Louise Carragher.

The deadline for nominations is Monday 4th April, with the celebration event taking place later that month at Bootle Town Hall .

To nominate a Citizen 4 Good go to www.sefton4good.org.uk/citizens.

Bootle locals young and old have their say on Christmas at Canalside

Bootle residents headed down to Bootle Canalside over the last two weekends to give their feedback on current and future plans as the site held its first ever Christmas event.

Visitors enjoyed sweet treats, steaming hot drinks and even a Christmas tipple beneath our stunning Christmas tree and our cosy tipis.

Families enjoyed storytelling and crafts with Y-Kids who attended our event and were wowed by our gingerbread stilt walkers weaving between our barrels and benches.

In the week, the site was visited by children from All Saints Primary who spent the morning singing Christmas songs, doing festive crafts and giving their feedback on how they want the site to be used in the future, adding to the feedback already gathered at our fantastic festive event.

The Christmas event was yet another opportunity to test the site ahead of a full opening later in 2022. The feedback gathered across all Canalside events so far will feed into future design and use of the site.

Feedback has already informed the orientation of the site, including a staircase giving access from Stanley Road and the listening process will continue with more opportunities to give feedback planned for early 2022.

Cllr Ian Maher, Leader of Sefton Council said:

“I was delighted to visit Bootle Canalside during our first ever Christmas at Canalside event and chat to young people in Bootle about the future of their town. The event spread some Christmas cheer among families in Sefton and was a chance to hear what they want from Bootle Canalside.

“Bootle Canalside is an organic site built around the wants and needs of the community and will be a fantastic shared space for all to enjoy. Every piece of feedback feeds into our plans for the site and how it will be used in future.

“There will be more opportunities in the new year to give feedback to ensure the site works for everyone in Bootle.”

Canalside: Tell us what you think!

We want to hear your thoughts on Bootle Canalside!

We want to know how we can make the site better, how we can use it in future and how we can make it work for the people of Bootle.

Fill in your feedback cards and pop it into a drop box before you leave, we appreciate your feedback!

But first, let us tell you the story so far…

Sefton Council purchased the Strand in 2017 and since then it has been at the heart of transformation and regeneration plans for Bootle.

The area adjacent to the Strand alongside the Leeds-Liverpool Canal has been put aside to house a multi-functional, open air food, drink and events space while the longer term ambitions for the Strand are developed.

Demolition works to clear the site started in December 2020. This opened up the space for new uses and our team submitted a planning application in Summer 2020.

The site was granted planning permission for this use in July 2021.The site has the name ‘Bootle Canalside.’

Bootle Canalside hosted a temporary, five day, pop up event over the August Bank Holiday.

Local food and drink traders served food and drink from around the world from refurbished shipping containers in a nod to Bootle’s industrial history.  The event was an opportunity to test the site with the community and gather feedback on what people in Bootle want to see from this exciting, new venue.

We saw thousands of local people attend the site of the Bank Holiday and hundreds of feedback cards were filled out.

We took everything you said on board and made some improvements to the site ready for Christmas!

We hosted our Christmas at Canalside gingerbread extravaganza event over two weekends in December.

Bootle Canalside was decorated for the festive season, featuring a Christmas tree, cosy tipis and gingerbread people on stilts.

Food and drink was served in a cosy, covered tipis surrounded by barrels and benches in true Bavarian style.

There were activities for all the family including crafts and storytelling to bring Christmas to Canalside. A gingerbread trail through the Strand lead out onto the Canalside.

The Bootle Canalside site is intended to grow organically in response to community feedback so we want as much feedback as possible!

We will continue to run our ‘You Said, We Listened, We Did’ feedback programme at all our events to give you as many opportunities as possible to tell us what you think!

Bootle Canalside, once completed, will include an urban garden, food and drink offer, leisure uses and events spaces. It will be a vibrant recreation and leisure area that makes full use of its fantastic setting and brings a new element to Bootle’s local economy.

Levelling Up Fund disappointment

Sefton Council Leader Cllr Ian Maher has expressed his disappointment at the Levelling Up fund announcement by the Chancellor yesterday which saw both Sefton’s bids for Bootle and Crosby rejected.

Cllr Ian Maher, Leader of Sefton Council said: “We are extremely disappointed by the Chancellor’s announcement today that the Government has rejected Sefton Council’s Levelling Up Fund bids for Bootle and Crosby.

“The Levelling Up Fund was intended to target those towns that have been left behind. Bootle and Crosby are among those areas hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and the bids were designed so that we could regenerate the economies of our town centres and invest in our communities, people and businesses.

“They are areas that have long been overlooked by the Government in terms of regeneration and development so in these times of supposed levelling up, I cannot fathom this decision not to provide this valuable support.

“Once again, we will have to proceed with our ambitious vision to create thriving town centres that work for all people in Sefton through our own determination, and attempt to attract resources in partnership with others, and we hope the Government will take note of the situation families are facing in Bootle and Crosby.”
