Ainsdale Beach Exercise: All You Need To Know

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) are holding a training exercise on Ainsdale Beach today to test their contractor response to an oil spillage incident.

Sefton Council is urging members of the public not to worry if they spot this exercise in action on the coast this morning (February 19) as it is not real.

In preparation, the Council has been working with the MCA to provide a suitable location for the exercise and to ensure that any disruption to the community is kept to a minimum.

There may be limited access to some parts of the beach, carpark and Ainsdale Discovery Centre which may need to be cordoned off to pedestrians and dog walkers, but this will only be a temporary measure for today and there is no cause for alarm.

Green Sefton’s operational staff will be on site to advise any local beach users about the exercise and to ensure the safety of public access around the test site.

There will be no actual pollutant used either at sea or on the foreshore and no lasting impact to the beach once the exercise is complete.

Councillor Ian Moncur, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “We’re urging people not to panic. The exercise is not real – but it provides a unique opportunity for us to help other agencies like the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to test their plans and will provide a wealth of insight and mutual benefit to Sefton and other Merseyside coastal Local Authorities in terms of ongoing shoreline pollution response and recovery planning.”

Ryan Carter, Resources and Claims Lead for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s Counter Pollution and Salvage Branch, said:  “Every year the MCA undertakes exercises with our partners across the country from ports, harbours, councils and other agencies to test our oil spill response.

“Today’s exercise is a ‘cold callout’ whereby we test our Oil Spill Response Tier 3 contractors, without giving them notice.

“We are very fortunate to be working with Sefton Council and their Green Sefton team in this area and shoreline around Ainsdale Beach. During the exercise there will be no actual pollution present.”

A new service in Bootle will help to support Sefton veterans

A new community service has opened in Safe Regeneration in Bootle aiming to support Sefton veterans with mental health issues through targeted counselling / therapy and physical activity programmes.

 The service has been set up in memory of John Paul Finnigan who sadly lost his life through suicide in 2018. John a brave Liverpool soldier from Huyton had completed a number of tours overseas in war ravaged areas serving proudly with the 2nd Battalion the Rifles.

 Upon leaving the Army John suffered greatly with PTSD and even lost close friends through their own PTSD struggles. Johns story highlighted the further need for support of our returning veterans and challenges that are faced after being involved in such distressing situations.

 Paul Growney CEO of Caring Connections stated ‘We are very proud to launch this service and hopefully it can provide a further  support mechanism to those returning home and struggling with civilian life. The story of John Paul has really touched our organization and we honored to dedicate this service to his name’.

 At Caring Connections we have a team of specialists, who understand the deep and often complex needs specific to veterans, are able to provide a 1:1 bespoke service in a safe, confidential environment.  The therapists are trained in a wide-range of therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), specializing in supporting clients bereaved through suicide. All therapists are registered with the BACP Professional Body.

All services are fully funded and are at no costs the veterans and / or their families.

Another chance to visit a fascinating exhibition with artefacts from Bootle’s History

A special exhibition displaying artefacts from Bootle’s illustrious history is being brought back this February, due to popular demand.

The exhibition was first unveiled as part of a week long celebration of the town’s 150th Birthday, in October 2018.

Due to its success, Sefton Council is delighted to be bringing it back to Bootle Town Hall for another week.

It will be held in the Assembly Hall from 10am – 5pm on Monday – Friday (February 18 – Friday 22)

There will also be Bootle history talks by Hugh Hollinghurst on Thursday, February 21, at 10.30am and 2.30pm.

Visitors to the history talk are asked to pay ÂŁ2 at the door.

Mayor of Sefton, Cllr Dave Robinson, said: “It’s great news that this exhibition is returning to the Town Hall. I am also excited to be conducting some of the tours myself.

“We had such a great response during the ‘150 Years of Bootle’ celebration, that we knew we had to bring it back to give even more people the chance to see these fascinating artefacts.”

Tesco’s ‘Bags of Help’ scheme funds notice boards in Rimrose Valley

A community funding scheme run by Tesco in Litherland has enabled Rimrose Valley Friends to deliver four, hand-carved notice boards at entrances around the much-loved Country Park.

The initiative required members of the public to vote for their favourite cause using counters given to them in store.  Originally intended to improve just one entrance, the fund awarded stretched to notice boards being delivered to four entrances around the valley.  Beach Road and Gorsey Lane are already in place, with two more due to be installed soon at the Derwent Road and Brindley Close entrances.

Roy Bouffler, who designed and made the notice boards said: “It was a pleasure to create something for a place that holds special memories for me, as a child and then with my own children.  It’s a place of peace and tranquillity, which I have felt the benefit of.”

Cllr Ian Moncur, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “Rimrose Valley is a great asset in the borough and The Green Sefton – and Natural Alternatives – team were happy to help, putting up Roy’s marvellous notice boards. They look great in situ, are a fine example of local craftsmanship and I’m sure will be well appreciated by our communities.”

Linda Gaskell of Rimrose Valley Friends added: “We’re delighted to be able to deliver the notice boards and to enhance several of the busiest entrances to the park.  The notice boards will contain a mixture of charity, campaign and other community notices, aimed at helping to bring the various communities which surround Rimrose Valley closer together.

“Work like this demonstrates that Rimrose Valley Friends as a charity is planning for the future of the Country Park and we are not put off by the threat of Highways England’s proposed road.

Sefton’s Public Engagement Panel has reached it’s 10-year milestone.

Sefton Council is delighted to be celebrating Sefton’s Public Engagement and  Consultation Panel’s 10th Anniversary.

 The Council and several partners developed the panel to ensure they collectively listen to residents and give them the opportunity to have a say in the services that are delivered.

 One of the ways this is done is by going out into our communities to carry out engagement and consultation activities. It is the panel’s responsibility to ensure these consultations are delivered effectively.

 The panel includes representatives from Sefton Council, South Sefton and Southport Clinical Commissioning Group, Sefton CVS, Sefton Young Advisors, Sefton Equalities Partnership, Merseyside Police, Mersey Fire and Rescue Service and Mersey Travel.
