Much needed summer food programme returns to Sefton

Sefton Council and its partners are once again providing food to schoolchildren from eligible families and other groups across the Borough through the 2022 summer holidays.

Now in its seventh year, the much-needed provision will see Sefton Council and Sefton Council For Voluntary Services (Sefton CVS) put together thousands of packed lunches for children across the Borough.

In 2021, more than five thousand meals, in the form of takeaway packed lunches, are served through the scheme. And as in 2021, families who have had their income significantly affected by the impact of the cost-of-living crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, will be eligible for the scheme.

And again, Sefton Council will be working in partnership with Sefton Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) to co-ordinate additional access to food with local Voluntary, Community and Faith (VCF) sector organisations across the borough.

To compliment the Summer Food offer to families, Sefton Council’s Family Wellbeing Centres will be hosting a number of activities for young people, as well as helpful sessions on topics such as Debt Advice, Wellbeing Days and Mental Health awareness.

Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing said: “This is always a very important service that Sefton Council and its partners provide but with escalating prices in the shops and rocketing fuel costs at home and at the petrol pumps it is, unfortunately, needed more than ever this year.

“We have had families tell us that without this service, they would have to miss paying bills to meet the extra cost of feeding their children during the long summer months, which is why we continue to do all we can to help people across Sefton who would otherwise struggle to put food on the table.”

This year’s scheme will run from August to September, with those families eligible for the scheme being notified in advance of where they will be able to collect their meals.

This year sees the start of the final, three-year countdown to NHS England’s goal of eliminating Hepatitis C in England by 2025.

Free testing

Liverpool University Hospital Foundation Trust (LUHFT, Hepatitis C Trust and Change Grow Live (CGL), who are commissioned to provide drug and alcohol treatment service for Sefton, are hosting a Hepatitis C Awareness Week between Monday 25th and Friday 29th July. CGL staff will be available to promote testing and treatment at their Southport and Bootle Offices all week for all people who would like to know their Hepatitis C status.

Support, guidance, and treatment information will also be available. Refreshments will also be provided, and vouchers will be available for anyone who completes a test.

CGLS’ offices are at The Greenhouse, 2 Bridle Way, Bootle, L30 4UA and 8 Church Street, Southport, PR9 0QT. People can also contact Change Grow Live on 0151 203 9755 or find out more at www.changegrowlive.org/sefton

Helpline

The Hepatitis Trust runs a helpline on 020 7089 6221 which can be reached 10.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday (except Bank Holidays and over the Christmas break, when dates and times may vary). People can also email at helpline@hepctrust.org.uk to arrange a call back or find out more at http://www.hepctrust.org.uk

Sefton is joining councils across the north in lighting up Southport Town Hall in purple to support the campaign.

Ambitious goal

Cllr Ian Moncur, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing said:
“I am pleased we are able to support World Hepatitis Day and NHS England’s ambitious goal of eliminating Hepatitis C in England by 2025, by turning Southport Town Hall purple on Thursday 28th July.

“I would recommend anyone who wants to check their Hepatitis C status to take advantage of CGL’s offer and go along to their Bootle or Southport offices for a free test this week.”

Essential treatment

Margaret Jones, Sefton Council’s Director of Public Health said:
“For Sefton says this is a really important initiative and an opportunity to both increase local awareness of hepatitis and to put people in touch with essential treatment services.

This is an example of how services can work together to reduce harms associated with substance use in line with the Government’s latest strategy on drugs.”

A range of activities are taking place across the country to mark this year’s World Hepatitis Day including fundraising skydiving events, which people can support by donating at www.totalgiving.co.uk/appeal/WHD2022

Update on burst water main on Church Road

One of the water mains on Church Road burst in the early hours of Saturday (23rd July) morning.

United Utilities have provided the below update as of 10.30pm:  24 July, 2022

We’re continuing to refill the pipe, but please bear with us as we are trying to do this as carefully as possible to avoid any further problems on the network; such as bursts, leaks or discoloured water. This means there could be a delay in your water pressure returning to what you are used to.

Please be assured we are doing all we can, and we have got water tankers pumping additional supplies into the network to help with attempts to get taps flowing again.

Once your supply is restored discolouration may occur, this is due to the repair work and should clear after a short time.  Please take a look at our discoloured water page for more information.

A quick reminder for customers impacted, we will proactively contact and automatically pay anyone entitled to compensation so customers don’t need to get in touch with us directly about this.

Thanks again for all of your patience and we’re so sorry for the disruption to supplies in the area.

United Utilities have provided the below update as of 9.00pm:  24 July, 2022

Repairs to the burst water main on Church Road are complete, and we have begun refilling the pipe. We will be doing this gradually to avoid any further issues occurring such as additional leaks or discoloured water.

Customers will start to see supplies return throughout the course of the evening until around 10pm, but it may take some time for pressures to return to normal. We will also be keeping our water tankers in the area to pump in additional supplies to help get taps flowing again.

The bottled water stations at Netherton Activity Centre L30 3TL and Tesco Hawthorne Road Litherland L21 8NZ closed at 9pm this evening.

Please note, we will proactively contact and automatically pay any customer entitled to compensation so customers don’t need to get in touch with us directly about this. Thanks for your ongoing patience and understanding.

Diversions

The A5036 (Dunnings Bridge Road) remains closed between Netherton Way & Hawthorne Road.

Two diversions are in place.

Traffic will be diverted right from Dunnings Bride Road /A5036 junction left towards Netherton Way (commercial/ freight traffic), or right toward Boundary Lane ((light/ commuter traffic).

The A5036 / Church Road is closed at Hawthorne Road, diverting traffic right up Hawthorne Road towards the Tesco store or left up Sefton Road.

The Council is liaising with Merseyside Police & National Highways on traffic management in the area.

United Utilities have provided the below update as of 5.00pm:  24 July, 2022

  • Burst pipe has been repaired
  • New water delivery station set up
  • Compensation will be paid to anyone without water for more than 12 hours

The situation is improving for customers in parts of Liverpool and Sefton who were affected by a burst water pipe since yesterday.  The areas affected are within the following postcode areas:  L9, L20, L21, L22, L23, L30.

18,000 properties now have water, after supplies were re-routed through other parts of the supply network. The remaining 14,000 properties are expected to have their supply restored tonight now that the water main repair has been completed.

Water delivery stations are handing out free bottled water to customers at the following locations:

  • Netherton Activity Centre, Glovers Lane, Netherton, L30 3TL
  • Tesco, Hawthorne Road Litherland L21 8NZ

Both sites will remain open until 9pm tonight.

So far 100,000 bottles of water have been handed out to residents, and United Utilities has been making deliveries of water direct to more than 1,600 vulnerable customers.

The problem has been caused by a burst water main on Church Road near the junction of Netherton Way in Litherland. United Utilities has been working around the clock on repairs, which took longer than expected to complete.

It has been announced that household customers who have been without water for more than 12 hours will automatically receive compensation.

In the meantime, water has been diverted through other parts of the supply network and a fleet of water tankers are in the area pumping directly into the water network to help boost the pressure.

United Utilities’ incident manager Simon Chadwick explained:

“We are very sorry and we appreciate how inconvenient this is for the customers affected.  We have been working around the clock on this incident but due to its complexity it is taking longer than we would like to resolve.

“Repair work on the pipe is now complete but it will take time now for the water main to refill and to re-pressurise the supply network. We will continue to provide updates direct to customers over the course of this evening and we thank everyone for their patience in the meantime.

“While our immediate priority is to restore water supplies, I want to reassure customers that we will be making automatic compensation payments to anyone who has gone without water for more than 12 hours.  Householders affected do not need to contact us, this will all happen automatically over the coming days.”

United Utilities is providing regular text and email updates to customers in the affected areas.  Information will also be updated on United Utilities’ website at www.unitedutilities.com and on social media.

Notes to editors:

When water supplies are fully restored United Utilities will ensure customers are compensated for the inconvenience of this incident.

Household customers who have been without water for more than 12 hours will automatically receive compensation. This is £30 for the first 12 hour period and a further £30 for each additional 12 hour period after that.  Household customers do not need to contact United Utilities, the company will write to them with full details.

“It is essential that our vulnerable residents are provided with water and have the support they need. Council officers are contacting vulnerable people and care homes directly in the affected areas and teams are delivering water to elderly and vulnerable people.

“The Council continues to liaise with and provide support to United Utilities (UU) and are working to open more water bottle distribution centres as a matter of urgency.

“The site remains under United Utilities care and we encourage residents to contact UU directly for information on water distribution and compensation, either by calling 03456723723 or https://www.unitedutilities.com/emergencies/up-my-street/l21-liverpool/

Update as of 9.30am, 24 July, 2022

“Some residents in parts of Liverpool are currently without water, or noticing their water pressure is lower than normal today.  The areas affected are within the following postcode areas:  L9, L20, L21, L22, L23, L30.

“A bottled water station has been set up at Netherton Activity Centre, L30 3TL, and this is open again today from 8am. There is plenty of water available free to those who need it.

“A second bottled water stations has been set up and is open from 9.30am this morning at Sainsburys, Liverpool Rd, Crosby, L23 2SA.

“Further details will be posted throughout the day at www.unitedutilities.com

“The problem has been caused by a burst water main on Church Road near the junction of Netherton Way in Litherland. United Utilities has been working throughout the night to prepare the pipework and the area around it so that repairs could start.

“Due to the size of the water main and other utility services in the same area this is a very complex repair and United Utilities engineers are liaising with Sefton Council and Electricity North West.

“In the meantime, water has been diverted through other parts of the supply network and a fleet of water tankers are in the area pumping directly into the water network to help boost the pressure.

United Utilities’ incident manager Charmian Abbott explained: “Our engineers have been working around the clock to isolate and prepare a large water main ready for repairs. This has taken longer than expected in order to protect the safety of our team on site. We have a large response team in the area who are also supporting customers with our fleet of water tankers, plus teams who will be handing out bottled water at designated water pick up points.

“We’re very sorry for the inconvenience and we are working hard to get supplies up and running as normal again as soon as possible. We need to extend the excavation so that we can replace a full 6 metre section of large water main. We will then need to refill the main with water which takes time due to the size of the pipe. We thank everyone for their patience in the meantime.”

“Vulnerable customers who are registered with United Utilities’ Priority Services scheme are being supported.

“United Utilities is providing regular text and email updates to customers in the affected areas. Information will also be updated throughout today on United Utilities’ website at www.unitedutilities.com  and on social media.

“A section of Dunnings Bridge Road remains closed as a result of the burst. People travelling in the area are advised to plan their route.”

A vital Changing Places facility officially opens at The Atkinson improving accessibility for visitors to Southport

Changing Places toilets enable anyone, regardless of their disability, to go to the shops, attend hospital appointments, enjoy community life, socialise, and travel. All the things that most of us take for granted every day. These facilities offer people with profound and multiple learning disabilities or with physical disabilities extra equipment and space to allow them to use the toilets safely and comfortably.

The Atkinson’s Changing Places facility has been available for use by visitors to Southport since 2020, but the official launch was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. On 18 July 2022, The Atkinson was joined by members of Southport Access For Everyone (SAFE) and The Atkinson Development Trust for the official launch of the vital facility and to celebrate the achievements of all involved. The opening ribbon was cut by Matthew Hurst, a regular visitor to The Atkinson and SAFE volunteer.

When The Atkinson re-opened in 2013, it had a sizeable accessible toilet on the first floor, with additional accessible toilets on the ground floor and second floor. In 2017 the need for a changing places facility was stressed to The Atkinson by members of SAFE, primarily Fiona Caplan and Matthew Hurst.

Fiona Caplan, Secretary, Southport Access For Everyone (SAFE):

Hundreds of thousands of people in the UK live with a disability that severely limits their mobility. They cannot use standard accessible toilets because they need access to the specialist equipment and extra room provided by a Changing Places toilet. Without this facility they are unable to go out and enjoy seeing and doing things that other people take for granted.

The Atkinson’s Emma Harrison (Principal Manager for Access, Engagement & Enterprise) met with Fiona Caplan, Matthew Hurst and his father David to discuss the need for a more accessible facility. In 2018, with an official letter of support written by Fiona on behalf of SAFE and a compelling letter of support written by Matthew and his father sharing their personal experiences, The Atkinson applied for a grant from the National Lottery Community Fund to install a Changing Places facility on the first floor of The Atkinson.

Matthew & David Hurst, Volunteers, Southport Access For Everyone (SAFE):

Everyone has a right to live in the community with access to its facilities but for some people like Matthew the lack of a fully accessible toilet denies them this right…. On using a Changing Places toilet we found that when using the ceiling hoist compared with mobile hoist, transferring was less difficult, more efficient, easier to access and careers at a lower risk of injury. Matthew was less anxious and far more positive operating the controls independently and with the adjustable washbasin he was also able to be more independent washing his hands.

The National Lottery Community Fund grant application was successful, and The Atkinson was awarded £10,000 towards a new facility. Further financial support was offered by The Atkinson Development Trust to prepare the existing accessible toilet for the upgrade. After a series of delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Changing Places facility was finally installed in 2020 by Astor Bannerman who are experts in the design and manufacture of specialist bathing and care equipment.

Emma Harrison, Principal Manager for Access, Engagement & Enterprise, The Atkinson:

This upgrade allowed us to go from compliant to comfortable and we are proud to have achieved it.  With lots of help from our partners at Southport Access For Everyone (SAFE) we were successful with an application to the National Lottery Community fund. With their funding we could buy the upgraded equipment and have it installed. The Atkinson Development Trust funded the vital work to get the room prepared for the installation.

This journey to expand The Atkinson’s accessibility is echoed in one of their core values in particular: ‘To listen to our audiences and visitors to help us improve the service we offer.’

The Atkinson’s fully equipped Changing Places facility is fully lockable, has a floor space of 12 square meters and includes a H frame ceiling track hoist, a wall mounted height adjustable adult sized changing bench, a peninsular toilet, a height adjustable washbasin, a shower, a non-slip floor, a privacy screen, a paper roll and two emergency cords.

Residents and visitors to Southport with their own RADAR key (a skeleton key that opens locked accessible toilets in the UK) can use the facility during The Atkinson’s opening hours. The RADAR Key Scheme enables disabled toilets to be locked to prevent vandalism and misuse, while also being readily available to those who really need them. Visitors without a RADAR key can ask a staff member to open the facility for them.

Meg (Visitor to The Atkinson)

Thank you SO much for having this beautiful changing facility. It’s amazing. Now we can have a day out at the beach without having to go home for the toilet. Things like this mean the world to us! Thank you. Meg (aged 8) and her mum Kathy.
