The first will take place at Bootle Cricket Club on Monday 12th September from 10.30am to 3:30pm. The second event will be taking place at The Atkinson Centre in Southport, Monday 31st October, from 10.30am to 3:30pm.

Information stands will be open at both events between 10:30am and 12.30pm. Blood pressure checks, chair-based exercises, free goody bags and massages will also be on offer.

There will also be dance sessions taking place from 1.30pm onwards on both days, accompanied by live bands, music and entertainment.

Energy billsSefton Council recognises many households will struggle to pay their bills this winter due to the cost of living crisis. Autumn’s expected rise to £3,554 will leave average household bills 80 per cent higher going into the colder months when energy use soars. Many vulnerable people will be hit hard, including older people and those in ill-health, living in energy inefficient homes that are difficult and expensive to heat.

People can find out more information about the events by contacting Sefton Opera on 0151 330 0479 or 07452 867 648 admin@seftonopera.org.uk.

Anyone concerned about keeping warm at home should contact Sefton’s Affordable Warmth Team on 0151 934 2222.

When the Cabinet meeting papers were published, Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing said:

“With their gas and electricity bills set to rocket and inflation rising to the highest rate in 40 years, households and business across Sefton will be wondering just how they are going to get through the coming winter and beyond.

“While Sefton Council has no magic solutions and like councils across the UK is hit by the same rises in costs to run its operations and services, it is vital we recognise people’s plight and work with our partners to provide what support and advice we can.”

Think 111 first this August Bank Holiday

NHS 111 graphicThe NHS is expecting an extremely busy weekend over the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend and is encouraging anyone who needs to check symptoms or get healthcare help or advice to ‘think 111 first’ and use the NHS 111 online service: www.111.nhs.uk.

The 111 online service offers patients quick advice and the best options for getting the care they need, which can include getting a call back from a trained clinician or nurse, booking them an appointment in A&E, or providing advice on how to help them recover.

Dedicated

Jan Leonard, primary care lead for Sefton at NHS Cheshire and Merseyside, said: “We are extremely grateful to the dedicated teams across Sefton who will be working hard over the coming Bank Holiday weekend to ensure all those that need care receive it.

“If you need help, please use NHS 111 online first, this will ensure everyone who needs medical advice can access it quickly and conveniently, while allowing staff in our A&Es to continue to care for the most seriously ill and injured patients.

24/7

NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, even on Bank Holidays, and can also be accessed by phone by calling 111. NHS 111 online is not suitable for under 5s.

111.nhs.uk can help you with:

  • where to get help for your symptoms, if you’re not sure what to do
  • how to find general health information and advice
  • where to get an emergency supply of your prescribed medicine
  • how to get a repeat prescription
  • get emergency dental appointments

You should still ring 999 if you experience:

  • signs of a heart attack like pain like a heavy weight in the centre of your chest
  • signs of stroke such as your face dropping on one side
  • difficulty breathing
  • heavy bleeding that won’t stop
  • seizures
  • sudden and rapid swelling of the eyes, lips, throat or tongue

Plan ahead

Sefton residents are also advised to plan ahead for any medication they need, and to order their repeat prescriptions early, to make sure they have enough supply while some services are closed over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Some local pharmacies in Sefton might have different opening hours over the bank holiday weekend, which can be found on the NHS Cheshire and Merseyside website.

Residents are advised to phone ahead before travelling to a pharmacy, as opening times may be subject to change.

Sefton Council Cabinet to discuss ‘stark’ cost of living crisis report at meeting next week

Bank notesAt their meeting next week, Sefton Council’s Cabinet will receive details of the bleak winter being faced by households and companies across the Borough, as a result of the growing, national Cost of Living crisis.

The report says the Council will demonstrate strong leadership and work with partner organisations to reduce the impact of the Cost of Living Crisis on local people.

Local jobs and incomes

Sefton Council will also work to protect local jobs and incomes by providing what support it can to companies and organisations across the Borough struggling to stay in business in the face of steeply rising operational costs.

And the Council will continue to work at the highest levels nationally to influence policies towards tackling poverty. It will also highlight the harmful physical and mental health impacts that poverty can have and how young people’s long-term life chances are restricted as a result.

Dedicated

Immediate actions the Council has taken include setting up a dedicated Cost of Living section on its website, at www.sefton.gov.uk/cost-of-living. There people can find information on a range of topics including Fuel Bills and Energy Saving and help with Rent and Council Tax.

Health & Wellbeing, Foodbanks & Food Pantries and Jobs & Volunteering are other subjects covered.

In addition, the Council is producing a quick reference fact sheet that can be printed off as well as downloaded, providing people with quick links on where to go for support and advice.

Bills set to rocket

Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing said: “With their gas and electricity bills set to rocket and inflation rising to the highest rate in 40 years, households and business across Sefton will be wondering just how they are going to get through the coming winter and beyond.

“While Sefton Council has no magic solutions and like councils across the UK is hit by the same rises in costs to run its operations and services, it is vital we recognise people’s plight and work with our partners to provide what support and advice we can.”

Child Poverty Strategy

Next month’s Cabinet will also be considering the Council’s Child Poverty Strategy which will be underpinned by a partnership Action Plan.

Global events firm picked for Marine Lake Events Centre

Major steps are being taken in the delivery of the state of the art Marine Lake Events Centre in Southport, as Sefton Council identify ASM Global, the world’s leading venue management company and producer of live experiences as the preferred operating partner.

The new Centre will be complemented by the UK’s first light, water and sound show in the town’s Marine Lake.

A report published today (Tuesday, August 23) to Sefton Council’s Cabinet will ask members to approve the lease agreement between the local authority and ASM Global, as well as seeking approval to borrow £19.7m of funding to be added to contributions from the Town Deal (£31.7m) and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority (£17.7m) towards the project.

This vital stage in the Marine Lake Events Centre (MLEC) and Water & Lights Show project follows a series of landmarks for the scheme – most recently the submission of a detailed planning application and comprehensive business case.

Investigatory works on the existing Southport Theatre and Convention Centre site and the Upper Promenade, have also started to allow for an assessment of the land’s underground conditions to progress the design further.

Marine Lake Events Centre joins ASM Global’s network of more than 350 venues around the world, which host 20,000 events, and welcome 165 million guests every year.

ASM Global has been identified by the local authority as the recommended partner to manage, operate and programme the new entertainment and conference venue along with The Water and Light Show in the resort.

Cllr Marion Atkinson, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Skills, said: “By awarding preferred bidder status to ASM Global we are once again showing our ambition, determination and passion towards delivering the incredible MLEC project.

“We are doing everything to ensure the end goal is a fully flexible, scalable cultural space capable of staging concerts, stand-up comedy, family shows, musical theatre, conferences, exhibitions that is the envy of other towns and cities.

“ASM Global operate 350 venues across five continents and share in the ambitions of Sefton Council and the Southport Town Deal in making MLEC a soaring success. Our borough, our town and the council will benefit from the wealth of experience and knowledge the team at ASM Global can bring to the table.

“Within the UK they operate 12 venues ranging from a 600-capacity seaside theatre in Whitley Bay to the 40,000 sqm exhibition centre of Olympia London and AO Arena in Manchester.

“The MLEC, together with the Light Fantastic, is forecast to attract more than half a million visitors to Southport year on year and generating an annual £18 million for the local economy and I am delighted that Sefton Council is once again leading the way in exciting projects like this.”

ASM European Executive Vice President, Chris Bray comments: ”ASM Global is delighted to partner with Sefton Council to deliver the Marine Lake Events Centre and welcome the venue into the ASM Global family. Southport has a rich history of events and culture and we are pleased to engage in this long-term partnership and what’s set to be a visionary and game-changing project for Southport and the Sefton region”

“The combination of a high quality, flexible venue and the Light Fantastic is a unique offer, in a stunning location, which will create an outstanding leisure, events and cultural destination for both residents and visitors. There has already been excellent progress in securing funding, developing the initial designs and submitting the planning application, and we are excited to now join the project team and share our wealth of experience of designing, developing and relaunching venues.”

“We look forward to delivering a busy concert and entertainment programme alongside a wide range of conference and business events that will provide a great meeting place and platform for the region.”

Nick Russell, Director at consultancy firm IPW said: “The Marine Lake Events Centre will create a cornerstone to the regeneration of Southport calling upon the former successes in both entertainment and conferencing in the town to create a new hub for business, theatre and events. During a very competitive process our team has selected ASM Global as the preferred operator for the project. Their worldwide experience will ensure the operating success of the venue as they have done in many venues across the country.

“We look forward to working with them to finalise the scheme and secure MLECs development for the town and the city region.”

The cabinet report also confirmed that Sefton Council is in ongoing discussions with a number of public sources such as Arts Council England, aiming to identify additional funding streams to support the project.

As part of the local authority’s robust assessment of capital costs for the project, £19.7m of funding will need to allocated to the MLEC project, which will currently be contributed by Sefton Council.
