Survey shows there are no ‘official’ rough sleepers in Sefton but Council highlighting support available

A person sleeping roughOnce again, a snapshot survey has shown that, officially, there are no rough sleepers in Sefton.

Single-night count

In line with the Government’s required process, Sefton Council carries out a single-night count of rough sleepers in the Borough each year, between October 1st and November 30th. The number of people found sleeping on the streets on that one night is used by the Government as Sefton’s official annual figure.

However, with the current national cost of living crisis taking hold, the Council is aware that a single-night survey may not tell the whole story.

Testament

Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, said: “This zero figure for a second year running is a testament to the hard work of the work our own Housing teams and our partner organisations do to help people facing homelessness and rough sleeping.

“But at a time when rents, mortgage rates, heating and lighting costs and prices in the shops are rising, we are concerned that this winter there may well be people who find themselves needing support through no fault of their own.”

Unsafe

Cllr Hardy urged anyone with nowhere to stay or who feels unsafe about returning to their home, or who is facing homelessness to contact the Housing Options Team by emailing housing.options@sefton.gov.uk calling them on 0151 934 3541 or visiting www.sefton.gov.uk/homeless. The team will assess their case and provide housing options.

People can also find out about local organisations providing support by visiting www.seftondirectory.com and searching ‘homeless’.

Committed

Cllr Hardy added: “Through our recently commissioned Integrated Homeless Service and our Housing Options team, the Council is committed to helping people facing homelessness and supporting vulnerable people who may find themselves sleeping rough.

“I would urge any members of the public who suspect people are having to sleep rough in Sefton, by calling the Rough Sleeper Outreach Team via Light for Life on 01704 501256 or 07918 746042 outside normal office hours and weekends.’’

People can also email the Light for Life team at shc@lightforlifesefton.org.uk.

Pupils put their best foot forward in walk to school challenge

Children across Sefton have been putting their best foot forward by making an incredible 15,500 ‘car free’ journeys to and from school.

Primary school pupils across the Borough were challenged to use the recent Autumn term to walk more to and from school as part of the national WOW Walk To School Challenge.

The month-long challenge was hosted by the Living Streets Charity, which was set up to encourage more active and healthy forms of travel across communities.

Teachers recorded that pupils across primary schools in Sefton completed an impressive 15,580 journeys to and from school without using a car in October.

These journeys were completed by walking or ‘wheeling’ to school on a bike or scooter.

Pupils at Forefield Community Infant and Nursery School topped the table for the highest number of individual journeys per school, closely followed by Christ Church CofE Primary and Springwell Park Primary.

Cllr Diane Roscoe, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said:  â€œNearly 800 pupils a day throughout October walking, cycling and scooting their way to school is a fantastic achievement.

“I want to thank all of our schools that took part in the challenge. By encouraging our youngest generations to discover the unlimited benefits of active travel and ending a reliance on the car is ultimately going to have a greater impact on our communities’ future health and wellbeing.

“Active Travel schemes are vital, not only for our health and wellbeing, but also for contributing massively to combatting the effects of climate change.

“We will continue to work with schools, parents and our communities to make journeys to school easier, safer and more enjoyable”

Sefton businesses being invited to free ‘Better Branding Through Storytelling’ event

Publicity flyer for Better Branding Through Storytelling eventLocal businesses are being invited to a Better Branding through Storytelling event in Southport on Thursday 17th November.

Organised by the Council’s InvestSefton team and Southport-based content marketing agency Hatter’s, the event takes place from 9.30am until 1pm at Southport Eco Centre.

More than logo and colours

Hatter’s owner Sarah Jackson said: “Branding is so much more than just a logo and some colours.

“It’s the impression you make, and the way you make people feel. The most successful businesses are those that build their brand around a story, and consistently tell that story in every aspect of how they communicate and present themselves.

“This session will help people understand how to build a brand story and share it in the right way.”

Memorable

Cllr Marion Atkinson, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Skills, said: “I would urge Sefton businesses of any size and from any sector to sign up for this free event.

“It will be a great opportunity for local businesses to learn more about what goes into creating a successful brand that’s memorable and then how to project and share that brand effectively.”

Other services are to be held in Aintree, Ainsdale, Crosby, Hightown, Ince Blundell, Litherland, Maghull, Bootle and Waterloo.

As with previous years members of the public are asked to arrive at a service in plenty of time. This is due to the high volume of residents expected to turn out to pay their respects.

Mayor of Sefton, Cllr Clare Carragher, said:

“Every year thousands of people from all walks of life join together publicly to pay our respects to our heroes.

“Remembrance Day Services are a time when we reflect and give thanks to all those brave souls past and present who have given their lives for our freedoms, while honouring serving members of the Armed Forces in recognition of their continued selflessness.

“It is vitally important that we pay our respects and many of my colleagues and representatives of Sefton will be attending other services around the borough throughout the day.”
