Mobile COVID testing Units in Sefton during February 2022.

Throughout March, drive-through Mobile Testing Units will be available across the Borough.

These sites are for people with symptoms – a new persistent cough, a high temperature or a loss of sense of taste or smell – and can be booked by calling 119 or visiting www.nhs.uk/coronavirus.

Mobile Units are open from 10am to 3pm.

Walk-through test centres

In addition, four local walk-through test centres are open , providing easy access to COVID-19 tests for people who do not have access to a car and for those who have symptoms and should not travel by public transport.

The four local test centres are located at:

  • Bootle Town Hall, L20 7AA
  • Crosby Library Car Park, Haigh Road, L22 OLQ
  • Netherton Activity Centre, Glovers Lane, L30 3TL
  • Southport Town Hall, PR8 1DA

They are open from 8am to 6pm every day,

Those with symptoms wanting tests, need to book ahead of going to either the walk-through or drive-through sites. It’s quick and easy to book by calling 119 or going online at www.nhs.uk/coronavirus.

Statement on Ukraine by Sefton Council Leader, Cllr Ian Maher

Sefton Council Leader Cllr Ian Maher has expressed “shock and dismay ” at President Putin’s actions in Ukraine, and his support for “Ukrainians and Russians everywhere who oppose the war”.

In a statement Cllr Maher said:

“President Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine is an act of unjustified aggression which has shocked and dismayed those of us across the world who cherish democracy peace and freedom.

“I want to express Sefton‘s support for Ukraine and its people. I also want to send our thoughts to those who have been forced from their homes and to those people of all nation nationalities who are victims of Mr Putin‘s war or who find themselves reluctantly fighting it.

“I can assure Ukrainians and Russians everywhere who oppose the war, including those who live in Sefton, that we will support them and all the efforts being made to show Mr Putin that there will be no winners in this war.”

Plans are underway to fly the Ukrainian flag at Bootle Town Hall and at Southport Town Hall.

 

Foster with your local authority in the Liverpool City Region

The search continues for more foster carers to look after children and young people in the Liverpool City Region as part of a region-wide recruitment campaign.

Sefton has joined forces with Knowsley, Liverpool and St. Helens Council, to raise awareness about fostering with your Local Council.

The four authorities will be holding a joint virtual recruitment event on Tuesday 1st March at 6pm.

Applications to foster children and young people have declined significantly throughout the region since the start of the pandemic, yet there are nearly 3000 children looked after across the four authorities.

The need to find safe and loving homes for some of the most vulnerable children in our region is more important than ever before.

Cllr Mhairi Doyle MBE, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said:

“It’s great to be joining Local Authorities across the City Region with one main purpose to appeal to local people to think about fostering. We need more carers to provide the support and stable homes that these young people need to really thrive.

“Fostering is so flexible and there are lots of different roles available to suit you and your family. You don’t need any special skills or qualifications. Foster carers just need to be able to provide a solid and reliable foundation for children and young people.

“If you are interested in fostering, then contact your Local Authority. You will benefit from the support and training we provide.”

The event on Tuesday 1st March will be an opportunity to learn about the process, benefits, support and training available when fostering with your Local Authority.

There will also be the opportunity to listen and chat to an experienced foster carer who will share their experiences of what fostering is like on a day-to-day basis and talk about why they are passionate about caring for local children as part of a local authority team.

Last chance to get COVID vaccinations at Bootle Cricket Club, on Monday 28th February

There’s still chance to get vaccinated at the temporary pop-up clinic which has returned to Firwood Bootle Cricket Club.

Success

Following the success of pop-up clinics over the festive period and on Monday 21 February, the site is also reopening on Monday 28 February from 10am to 4pm.

South Sefton residents aged 18 or over can simply turn up to the clinic at the club on Wadham Road, Bootle, during opening hours to get their first, second or booster jab, with no appointment needed.

Not too late

Dr Pete Chamberlain, local GP and chair at NHS South Sefton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), said: “NHS teams in Sefton continue to work hard to make sure everyone can access their COVID-19 vaccine, whether it is their first, second, or booster dose.

“This pop-up site will make it easier than ever for people to come along and get vaccinated.

“It’s not too late to get your first jab, while second jabs and booster doses greatly reduce the risk of serious illness from COVID-19, so please come along if you are eligible.”

Not fully vaccinated

Margaret Jones, Sefton Council’s director of public health said recently: “We are not fully vaccinated unless we have had two jabs and a booster, even if we have recently had COVID-19.

“Vaccination doesn’t mean we can’t catch the virus or be re-infected but if we do, we have stronger immunity and will be far less likely to be seriously ill.”

Plan ahead

Residents are being advised to plan ahead for their journey to the vaccination site, as parking is limited at the cricket club and is restricted on nearby roads.

Companies to be offered opportunities to invest in Ainsdale’s Sands pub

Nigel Thompson / Ainsdale Beach railway station (site), LancashireSefton Council is set to offer local and national companies the opportunity to invest in the former Sands pub building in Ainsdale.

Located at the gateway to the hugely popular Ainsdale Beach and dune-scape on Sefton’s stunning Natural Coast, the Council-owned property has been identified as a key site for potential regeneration.

Premier

Ainsdale Beach is recognised as one of the premier beaches in the UK for extreme kite activities. There are zones set aside for kite buggy and land-board use and kitesurfing takes place on the sea.

The beach has been awarded International Blue Flag status on several occasions, as well as also receiving multiple Keep Britain Tidy’s Quality Coast Awards, indicating the standards of beach management are among the highest in the UK.

Sefton Council continues to heavily invest in regenerating the area around Ainsdale-On-Sea.

Last year saw the incredible Sand Lizard mural created a Toad Hall by Paul Curtis and trials of new of food & drink outlets.

New toilet facilities and more off-beach parking are also being developed.

Ripe for regeneration

Cllr Marion Atkinson, Sefton Council’s Labour Cabinet Member for Regeneration & Skills, said: “For many, the Sands Pub building is the first sight they see when visiting our beautiful coastline and the building was once synonymous with Ainsdale’s history prior to its closure years ago.

“The site is ripe for regeneration and has incredible potential and we know from stringent market testing over the past year that there is wide scale interest from local and national organisations, keen to invest in it.

“We will now work with agents Fitton Estates and Savills with the goal of creating suitably impressive welcome to this visitor hotspot popular point on Sefton’s glorious 22-mile coastline.”

Investment

The decision to place The Sands building on the market follows high levels of public support for more investment in the Ainsdale beach area

Regeneration of the Sands site will complement other projects in the town  including the Marine Lake Events Centre, the Enterprise Hub and the ongoing successes of the new Southport Market.

A decision on the how the redevelopment of the former Sands pub site may be progressed is expected to be made later this year.
