One Vision Housing awarded Ā£10k to host events to tackle loneliness

Sefton-based social housing association, One Vision Housing have been awarded Ā£10,000 by the Big Lottery Fund to support ā€˜Celebrate the Good Timesā€™, a series of four community events which aims to bring people together and tackle social isolation.

Social and retirement housing provider One Vision Housing (OVH) are addressing the issues of loneliness and lack of social interaction in older generations.

Studies show that social events can improve mental and emotional wellbeing as well as lower depression and anxiety.

The housing association successfully applied for National Lottery Awards for All funding towards four, free entry, community events taking place between June and December 2018.

OVH are working with different local organisations to invite individuals who would benefit from the social interaction afforded by the events.

The first of the four events was The Great Get Together (a More In Common project in partnership with the Jo Cox Foundation) which took place at the Bootle Firwood Cricket Club on Friday 22nd June.

Other events include a Suffragette-themed afternoon tea with live entertainment to celebrate Older Personā€™s Day in October, a WWI centenary event involving the Armed Forces and local veterans, and a Christmas Day Lunch where guests, who may be spending the holidays alone, can enjoy a three course meal in the company of fellow attendees and volunteers.

OVH Head of Customer Empowerment, Ann Owens said: ā€œWe were overjoyed to be awarded this funding which allows us to reach more people in our communities. Itā€™ll make a real difference to those who may be socially isolated and wanting to get out a bit more and meet new people.ā€

Donā€™t score an own goal this week! Stay cool in the hot weather

With weather forecasters predicting a hot, sunny week ahead, and the bonus of another England football match, health leaders in Sefton are encouraging people to stay cool. 

 If youā€™re combining the footie with a few beers and a BBQ afterwards, remember that alcohol increases your risk of dehydration. Donā€™t score an own goal; take care to stay hydrated and use sunscreen.  

 With temperatures predicted to reach 28Ā°C on Merseyside, sun worshippers are being urged to take it easy in the heat by following this simple advice:

  • Drink cold drinks and avoid tea, coffee and alcohol which can dehydrate you
  • Use sunscreen with a SPF of at least 15, make sure that it is still in date, follow the pack instructions and apply at regular intervals ā€“ otherwise it is ineffective
  • Use sunscreen together with shade and clothing to protect your skin from burning ā€“ never use sunscreen as a reason to stay longer in direct sunlight
  • Make sure you have water with you
  • Check on elderly and vulnerable neighbours and friends who may find the heat too much. The heat can be dangerous for the very young, older people or those with serious illnesses. In particular, it can make heart and respiratory problems worse.

 Debbie Fagan, chief nurse at NHS South Sefton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and NHS Southport and Formby CCG, said: ā€œMost of us will be making the most of the warm weather weā€™re currently enjoying, but itā€™s important we donā€™t end up regretting it either.

ā€œSunscreen, shade and plenty of water, especially if youā€™ve been drinking alcohol, are the three main things you should be doing to keep yourself healthy.

ā€œIf you feel unwell after being in the sun for some time, itā€™s a good idea to go somewhere cool to rest and have a cool shower or bath.  If you are breathless, or are confused or dizzy, call NHS 111 straight away, theyā€™ll be able to give you more advice.ā€

Actor and interviewer Gyles Brandreth brings his hilarious show to the Atkinson.

Actor, author and One Show reporter Gyles Brandreth is coming to  the Atkinson with his new one-man show Break a Leg!

 This show promises to have everyone roaring in the theatre aisles with laughter.

Gyles said, “The new show is a celebration of some of my favourite actors – people Iā€™ve met and admired.  The show will include the day I shared a stage with Laurence Olivier and the night I shared a dressing room with the stripper at Bernard Manningā€™s club in Manchester. ”

 When Gyles interviewed his dear friend Joanna Lumley (In a car park adjacent to The Absolutely Fabulous rehearsal room)… this happened as Gyles recalled…

“It is 9.00 am: we are sitting in the sun, by her car (an unspectacular green Nissan), drinking take-away cappuccino from paper cups: Jo does not eat breakfast; she barely eats lunch; in the evening she toys with a lettuce leaf.  (She is a committed vegetarian, with a soft spot for cigarettes and fine wine.)  I cut to the chase.  She is beautiful.  She has energy, style, class.  For many she is a fantasy woman.  What is her fantasy of herself, I asked Joanna…she throws back her head and laughs.  ā€˜It changes all the time.  At the moment Iā€™m going through a Doris Day period.  I want to wear perky, gingham dresses.  Actually, I donā€™t want to look like Doris Day.  Iā€™d like to look more like Brigitte Bardot, with cute little dark glasses.  Iā€™d either be cycling with a puppy in the front basket on my bicycle, or Iā€™d be driven in a sports car, or possibly Iā€™d be sitting sideways, without a helmet, on a Lambretta, whipping through Rome.”

 Gyles has starred in The West End and on TV for decades, Gyles added, ” As a performer I have appeared in pantomime, Wilde and Shakespeare. I’m privileged to know some wonderful theatre folk, from the effortlessly charming Vincent Price to the endlessly dazzling Maggie Smith.  On his ninetieth birthday, we invited the great Sir John Gielgud to join us both for lunch.  The actress Glenda Jackson made up the fourth.  When Sir John arrived, I told him how honoured we all felt that he should choose to celebrate his ninetieth birthday with us.  ā€˜Oh, my dears,ā€™ he replied in that beautiful fluting voice of his, ā€˜Iā€™m delighted.  You see, all my real friends are dead.”

 Gyles is one of the UK’s most recognisable names and is truly amazing live, ‘Break a Leg!‘ promises to be a side splitting evening of amazing comedic stories and one not to be missed!

Derby Park set for action packed family fun day

The Friends of Derby Park are busy preparing for a summer music event, at the Bootle based Park next month.

The annual Derby Park Music and Fun Day takes place on Sunday July 22, from 12pm till 3 p.m. featuring St Helen’s Brass Band (2 – 3pm) and Serendipity Barber Shop Quartet (1 – 1.30 pm) with live music throughout the day, with crafts for the children, and pony rides from Shy Lowen Pony Sanctuary.

Be sure to bring a picnic – and of course the ice cream man will be there too!

Hosted by the Friends of Derby Park, with help from Sefton Council, the annual summer fun day is a popular event in the local calendar and attracts hundreds of families each year to the beautiful park on Fernhill Road.

The event is free to attend with activities starting from 12pm.

Sefton Council receive three nominations in Apprenticeship Awards

Sefton Council is proud to have received three nominations at the prestigious Liverpool City Region Apprenticeship Awards 2018.

 The event, held on June 18 at the Exhibition Centre in Liverpool, celebrated apprenticeships in the Liverpool City Region and recognises the best apprentices and apprentice employers. 

 The awards were organised by Liverpool City Region Apprenticeship Hub and were a part of the Liverpool City Region Skills Show. This is a free one day event for residents to meet local employers, apprenticeship providers, colleges and universities.

 After a high level of applications, Sefton Council was recognised for its dedication to recruiting apprentices, with its nomination in the Sefton Apprenticeship of the Year section.  

 Jon Boyle, 23, and Ernest Brookes, 57, are apprentices currently working at Sefton Council and were both nominated for Liverpool Apprentice of the Year. Jon has become a strong member of the team at Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre while Ernest joined the Council to test, develop and roll-out the new provider portal to nursing and residential care providers.

 Attending the awards, Cllr Paulette Lappin, Cabinet Member for Regulatory, Compliance and Corporate Services, said: “Congratulations to our two apprentices for receiving their nominations in a very tough category. It is very well deserved and we commend both Jon and Ernest for all their hard work.

 “We are committed to recruiting apprentices and helping them to develop the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their chosen profession. Apprenticeships can give individuals valuable on-the-job experience, which helps gain confidence to enter the working environment.”

 On commending Jon and Ernest, the Awards stated:

Jon Boyle : Advanced Apprenticeship in Facilities Management

Training Provider, Asset Training Consultancy, worked closely with Jon to help him secure an apprenticeship with Sefton Council. By undertaking a variety of tasks such as security, health and safety and dealing with staffing issues, Jon has built the confidence and knowledge and believes that the support received has given him the confidence to follow his chosen career.

Ernest Brooks: Diploma in Business Administration

Having left school without any qualifications, Ernest feels he’s made great strides by starting his apprenticeship. He has been a key figure in the implementation of a cost saving provider portal and he is now ready to take on more responsibilities. Ernest also worked with Asset Training Consultancy to gain his apprenticeship with Sefton Council.

Corporate Apprenticeship Team

With the help of a dedicated Corporate Apprenticeship team, Sefton Council takes on an average around 60 apprentices per year. The programme includes monitoring and supporting apprentices on their journey whilst enabling them to make the most of their skills and gaining valuable experience.
