Feeling under the weather this winter? Think NHS 111

Local residents with an urgent but non-life threatening medical concern this winter are being encouraged to use NHS 111 by health commissioners in Sefton.

NHS South Sefton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and NHS Southport and Formby CCG are supporting the national ‘Help Us, Help You’ campaign, focussing on different services over winter, one of which being NHS 111.

NHS 111 is operated by fully trained advisers 24 hours a day, seven days a week who will listen to your medical concerns and, if necessary, arrange for you to speak to relevant healthcare professionals, such as a nurse, doctor or emergency dentist.

You can access the service by dialling 111 or online at www.111.nhs.uk.

Dr Craig Gillespie, local GP and chair of NHS South Sefton CCG, said: “NHS 111 is a service that all local residents can benefit from if they need health advice. Using 111 can save time that would be spent in a GP practice or walk in centre.

“If you have any mobility issues or are having trouble leaving the house because of your illness, NHS 111 allows you to get help from the comfort of your own home. Staying at home will also limit the spread of germs to vulnerable people in the community.”

NHS 111 will advise you on whether you should book an appointment with your GP or extended GP access service, give self-care advice, or direct you to an appropriate, local service if needed.”

Whatever the need is, NHS 111 will ensure that you get the right care, from the right person, as quickly as possible.

So if you think you need urgent medical help, call 111 or visit www.111.nhs.uk.

Sefton Council observes Christmas Shutdown: All You Need to Know

Restricted services will be in place during Christmas and New Year as most Sefton Council staff are required to take unpaid leave.

Like previous years, residents can still access a range of information and transactions via the council website – sefton.gov.uk.

This includes checking bin collections, applying for licences, reporting environmental issues or paying Council Tax and business rates.

Because of the unpaid leave to be taken on December 24, 27, 30 and 31, most council buildings will be closed.

Services that will continue to operate include critical social care services for adults and children, a limited street cleaning service, Registrars, domestic and commercial waste collections and urgent highways issues, including gritting.

Residents are also being encouraged to recycle as much waste as possible and use the household waste recycling centres across the borough.

Similar to other years, the green wheelie bin collection for garden waste has now been suspended and will return in March 2020.

Some Sefton Council-run leisure centres will be open at varying times during these dates and users are advised to check sefton.gov.uk for opening times.

A list of social care emergency phone numbers is attached below (see below).

A spokesperson for Sefton Council said: “Over the course of the financial year, our hard-working staff have their pay reduced in order to take four days unpaid leave.

“Other savings from the closure period come from the reduced need for heating, lighting and running buildings, equipment and vehicles.

“While reduced services are being operated, we will still maintain key services for some of the most vulnerable residents in our communities.

To access a range of service and transactions online, visit sefton.gov.uk. An automated phone service will be in place between December 24, 2019 and January 1, 2020 (inclusive) on 0345 140 0845 and most service requests will only be actioned beyond January.

Emergency contacts on December 24, 27, 30, and 31 between 9.00am-5.30pm:

Children’s Social Care: 0151 934 3114
Adult Social Care: 01704 704389 (North)
Adult Social Care: 0151 529 3761 (South)

All you need to know about bin collections during Christmas & New Year

Refuse and recycling collections in Sefton will continue over Christmas and the New Year for residents across the borough, with minor alterations to collection dates.

Sefton’s collection crews will be observing the usual Christmas Day & Boxing Day bank holiday on Wednesday 25 & Thursday, December 26 meaning that there will be a slight change to regular bin collection days.

These collections will be Friday 27 December & Saturday 28 December 2019.

For Friday collections please present your wheeled bin for collection on Monday December 30.

For the week commending December 30, Tuesday’s collection will take place as normal, while the remainder of the week’s schedule will be collected one day later in line with the New Year’s Day bank holiday.

Refuse collection staff will be working Saturday January 4 to ensure all collections are undertaken that week.

Normal service will resume from Monday, January 6, 2020.

Separate arrangements for trade waste collections over Christmas and the New Year will be made and businesses affected will be contacted directly by Sefton Council.

Similar to other years, the green wheelie bin collection for garden waste will be suspended from the end of November 2019 until March 2020.

Residents are also reminded of their rubbish responsibilities when disposing of waste at recycling centres over the festive period.

Any rubbish left on the highway outside a recycling centre is considered fly-tipping and offenders can face substantial fines.

Major improvements planned for Splashworld Southport

Sefton Council is delighted to announce exciting new plans for the refurbishment and regeneration of Dunes Splashworld in Southport.

Work will begin shortly on a complete refurbishment of the popular indoor all-weather water park with the aim of all works being finalised in time for the 2020 summer holidays.

In order to carry out the improvements, Splashworld will be closed for approximately eight months from December 2, 2019.

The Dunes Leisure Centre offer will remain fully operational and is unaffected by the works.

A spokesman for Sefton Council said: “This is incredibly welcome news which will see Splashworld benefit from updated facilities, and potentially the addition of some new facilities for people to enjoy for many years to come.

“Splashworld has been open since 2007 and, like many well used facilities, is now in need of refurbishment. During the closure we will also be carrying out some remedial works.

“The winter months are the perfect opportunity to do this as they are naturally quieter and we will be using this time to engage with our residents, centre users and the local community to garner ideas for how the refreshed facility can change.”

Spare a gift for a child this year and get behind the Mayor’s Christmas Toy Appeal

You can make Christmas extra special for some of Sefton’s vulnerable children by getting behind the Mayor’s Christmas Toy appeal.

Each year thousands of toys, gifts and stocking fillers are lovingly donated by kind hearted residents from across the borough and given to our most deserving families.

New gifts unwrapped for children of all ages, can be taken to either Bootle, Maghull or Southport Town Halls or dropped off at any Sefton Council library or leisure centre by Wednesday Dec 18.

Residents can also donate at the Asda store in Bootle and Southport. Gift tokens are particularly welcome to be given to older children.

All presents will then be distributed to children and young people throughout the borough by volunteers from Sefton Council and Sefton Children’s Trust on behalf of the Mayor.

Cllr June Burns, the Mayor of Sefton, said: “The generosity of the people of Sefton is amazing and every year thousands of people donate a present to the annual Mayor’s Christmas Gift Appeal.

“Putting smile on a little one’s face at Christmas is one of the best things a person could do and so I urge as many people as possible to get involved.

“Any donation is welcome and we are looking for gifts for all ages from babies and toddlers to teens.

“To ensure we can get the right gift to the right child may I please ask that the gifts be new and are left unwrapped.”
