Southport Air Show 2019: Traffic & Travel advice

As thousands of aviation enthusiasts descend on Southport for the annual awe inspiring Air Show next weekend, Sefton Council has put together a helpful guide to the three day spectacular. 

Bigger than ever before, the stunning show takes place along Southport’s golden sands from Friday, September 6 to Sunday, September 9 with tens of thousands of visitors due to visit the resort over the weekend.

Also paying a flying visit to Southport will be a whole host of jaw dropping aeroplanes performing stunning, daring and, at times, emotional displays to wow crowds, starting with a thundering Friday night line up.

A fireworks finale on Friday will set up an amazing weekend of both aerial and ground entertainment for the whole family.

However before all that, visitors need to know how and when to get there!

Gates will open at 6pm on Friday (September 6) and from 10am on Saturday and Sunday (September 7-8).

With thousands of people expected to visit the resort over the three days, the local road networks will be busy and visitors are encouraged to take full advantage of public transport where possible.

Due to the size of the show, a number of road closures will be required to assist with the setup and safety of all those attending.

Marine Drive (Pleasureland to Marine Parade) will be closed from 4:30pm on Wednesday, September 4 to Monday, September 9.

From Friday, September 9 the following road closures will also be in effect at varying times:

Coastal Road (Weld Road – Pleasureland) 

Esplanade (Victoria Park – Marine Drive) 

Marine Drive (Fairways – Marine Parade) 

Both the Coastal Road and Marine Drive will reopen each evening following site checks.

Those travelling to the show by car are advised to tune in to the dedicated Southport Air Show Radio channel on 87.7FM for the latest news and up to date travel and parking advice.

Parking is available on Princes Park, the Esplanade Car Park and Victoria Park. Beach and Marine Drive parking will only be available on Saturday and Sunday.

Directional signage and stewards will be on hand throughout all three days to lead visitors to designated parking sites.

Motorists are advised to switch off any Sat Navs and follow air show signage.

Once the show finishes each evening, visitors are encouraged to take full advantage of the resort’s fabulous restaurants and nighttime entertainment.

Essential safety works start on Coronation lanterns

Essential works are set to take place to remove three structurally unsound lighting columns on Lord Street, Southport.

Surveys of all three coronation columns, which were erected along the main boulevard in 1953 to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, have found signs of considerable structural wear and tear.

As a result, works will now take place on Wednesday, August 28 to remove all three defective columns as a matter of paramount public safety.

The commemorative coronation lanterns, which adorn the top of the columns, will be retained and restored by the local authority ahead of them being reinstated on new columns. 

A spokesman for Sefton Council said: “While the Coronation lamps are a fantastic part of our borough’s heritage, the safety of the public is paramount and the columns need to be removed.

“Our contractors will be working diligently to make sure all three lanterns, which are the focal point of the coronation lamps, will be safely recovered and restored with intention of being reinstated at a later date.

“When the columns were first erected over 66 years ago, 2019 seemed such a long time away and in that time they have naturally weathered to a point where they are no longer considered structurally sound. 

“Due to the nature of the works, we expect there may be some minimal disruption to road users while cranes and equipment are put in place.”

The coronation lamps are situated at the junctions of Duke Street, Eastbank Street and Manchester Road respectively.

Sefton welcomes sentencing of unlicensed Netherton dog breeder

Sefton Council has welcomed the sentencing of an unlicensed dog breeder from Netherton after an investigation by the borough’s Trading Standards team.

Lawrence Moran of Chapel Lane, Netherton pleaded guilty to breeding dogs without a licence after 44 dogs, including several puppies, were found at his home address in December 2018.

Further investigations by Sefton Council’s Trading Standards team uncovered that Moran, 31, has also been responsible for at least 17 litters and 49 puppies in 2018.

He was just sentenced at Sefton Magistrates court (Friday, August 16) following a guilty plea to the offence of breeding dogs without a licence.

Moran was sentenced to 120 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £4985.

Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regulation & Compliance, said: “This is a fantastic result following months of hard work by our Trading Standards team.

“We had previously warned the defendant about unlicensed breeding following allegations by concerned members of the public however our concerns continued and a warrant was issued.

“What our team uncovered was a dog breeding enterprise on a massive commercial scale. This kind of illegal operation makes it almost impossible to make sure animal welfare standards are met and often the well-being of puppies are put way behind profit.

“We will continue to act on any information we receive regarding illegal trading practices and we hope this case serves as a stark warning to others.”

Marine Way Bridge to close for routine maintenance works

Routine maintenance works are set to take place on Marine Way Bridge, Southport next month.

The extensive works are scheduled to begin on the bridge, which is now fifteen years old, from Monday, September 9 and take up to three weeks to complete.

In order to carry out the works safely and to allow for access for large equipment, Marine Way Bridge will be closed to all traffic, including pedestrians during weekdays.

However to compensate for increased traffic on weekends, the bridge will be reopened temporarily for both weekends commencing September 14 and September 21.

Diversions will be in place throughout the closure to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.

Cllr John Fairclough, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Locality Services, said: “The dates for the work have been chosen to take account of school holidays, the Air Show, the Musical Fireworks Championship and the 24 hour Yacht Race.

“The Marine Way Bridge is a vital asset both to our highways network and is the gateway to some of the most beautiful coastline in the North West.

“We have been working closely with our Tourism team and partners to make sure the works take place during a brief quiet period in Southport’s packed events calendar.

“The works will start following the end of the Southport Air Show and we are confident they will be completed before the British Musical Fireworks Championships on September 27-29.

“However if bad weather delays any works, the bridge will be opened during that weekend to accommodate visiting traffic.”

A diversion route will be in place to direct traffic across Marine Lake and advanced signs on Marine Drive at the North and South will allow motorists to choose their preferred route to the East or West of Marine Lake.

Sefton Council declares a Climate Change Emergency

Sefton Council has declared a ‘Climate Change Emergency’ to help protect future generations.

Councillors voted to approve the declaration at Southport Town Hall (Thursday, July 18) following a motion raised by Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regulation and Compliance. 

A declaration of a ‘Climate Emergency’ was voted through which will see the council continue it’s hard work to reduce carbon emissions and aim to be a ‘net-zero’ local authority by 2030.

It is hoped that Sefton can adapt cleaner and greener alternatives for all of its energy usage over the next 11 years.

Cllr Lappin said: “Recent extreme weather events over several years have presented severe challenges to Sefton and the Met Office clearly states that these kind of extreme weather events are significantly more likely on a planet with human-caused climate change.

“The message is loud and clear: business as usual is no longer an option.

“This is now a time for action and we will work closely with our partners across the Liverpool City Region to make sure we do all we can to tackle climate change in our beautiful borough and the world.”
