European Parliamentary Elections: North West candidates confirmed

The full list of candidates for the forthcoming European Parliamentary Elections has been published.

Nine political parties and two individual candidates will contest the elections on Thursday, May 23 to elect the North West of England’s eight Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).

The full list can be viewed at www.northwestvotes.gov.uk where you can also find more information about the European Parliamentary Elections in the region.
More than five million electors across the North West – Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside – will have the opportunity to vote.

The North West European Parliamentary Elections count and declaration of results for the North West region will take place in Manchester on Sunday, May 26, after polls close across Europe.

People will not be able to vote in these elections unless they have ensured they are on the Electoral Register. If you are not registered already, visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and register by the Tuesday, May 7 deadline.

European Union citizens living in the North West, are eligible to vote in the European Parliamentary elections in either the United Kingdom or in their country of origin but not both. To vote in the United Kingdom, they must be registered to vote and have completed an additional form available at www.northwestvotes.gov.uk/downloads/file/3/european-voter-registration-form—uc1

The deadline for the return of this form is also Tuesday, May 7.

Anyone eligible who is on the electoral register can choose to register to vote by post. Applications for a postal vote in this election must be received by 5pm on Wednesday, May 8. The deadline for proxy votes is 5pm on Wednesday, May 15. To find out more visit www.yourvotematters.co.uk

Bootle healthcare firm win top Queen’s Award for Enterprise

A Bootle based company has been honoured with a ‘Queen’s Award for Enterprise’ in the International Trade category for outstanding short-term growth in overseas sales over the last three years.

Richardsons Healthcare Ltd. designs and manufactures operating table and birthing mattresses. The family owned private business, which is based in Bootle, started trading in 1988. The company supplies pressure relieving mattresses and accessories to some of the world’s largest medical device companies and are recognised industry leaders in the development of this type of patient support surface.

The prestigious Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are for outstanding achievement by UK businesses in the categories of:
• innovation
• international trade
• sustainable development
• promoting opportunity through social mobility

Despite a difficult economic trading environment for UK manufacturers, the company’s overseas earnings grew by 66% over a three-year period. Their main customer base includes Germany, France, Finland, Sweden and Italy. However the company has more recently expanded their export market to the USA and China.

Major investment in product innovation and quality assurance has led to great success with manufacturing contracts for medical class 2 products such as heated mattresses. The new product line offers great potential to grow sales in this sector overseas, particularly the United States.

On winning the Queens Award for Enterprise, Michael Gould, Managing Director, said: “This is wonderful recognition of the hard work and professionalism of our entire team.

“The award marks the next step in our drive to develop new products and expand our international customer base. We recognise that exporting is essential for the viability of our company, and British manufacturing in general.”

The award is going to be presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside at the Company’s premises on Irlam Road, Bootle in the coming weeks. Mr. Gould will also attend a reception for award winners, hosted by Her Majesty the Queen, at Buckingham Palace in June this year.

Richardsons Healthcare Ltd, has championed British-made manufacturing and exporting in Sefton for many years. This includes working with InvestSefton, Sefton Council’s enterprise and inward investment service on initiatives including chairing the Sefton Export Advisory Group, Sefton Economic Forum and the UK International Business Festival.

Margaret Carney, Sefton Council’s Chief Executive, added: “We are tremendously proud of this major achievement by a Sefton business. Richardsons Healthcare Ltd has shown a real commitment to investing in research and development, and developing new markets overseas which has now been recognised by this prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

“The company is flying the flag for the British manufacturing industry, and more importantly Sefton. They are positive about employing local residents and have worked with InvestSefton in encouraging other Sefton businesses to consider exporting.”

 

Wildflower meadows, literary festivals and more join the #SeftonCrowd!

The first round of projects on Sefton’s very own crowdfunding platform have now launched.

Seven ventures are now live on the SeftonCrowd – an online platform which allows volunteers and community groups to gain the financial support of people across the borough and further afield so they can create life changing projects.

Projects, ranging from the creation of wildflower meadows, a Children’s Literary Festival and a wheelchair-accessible horseback nature trail are now open to receive backing from residents and businesses in Sefton.

They are:

Empower Our Flowers (The Atkinson, Southport)
Crosby Youth Cafe (The Mix, Crosby)
Stafford Moreton Way Wildflower Meadow (Maghull Town Council, Maghull)
Bees, Blooms & Butterflies (Rimrose Valley Friends, Seaforth)
Lean, Grow Share (Regenerus, Bootle)
Bootle Children’s Literary Festival (Ykids, Bootle)
Horseback nature trail (Shy Lowen Sanctuary, Sefton)

Anyone can support a project for as little at £2 and funding may also be available via Sefton Council’s Community Transition Fund and other national funding pots.

Tanya Wilcock, Sefton Council’s Head of Communities, said: “We could not be more delighted with the reception of our SeftonCrowd initiative and the first round of projects which are now open for support.

“Throughout the creation of SeftonCrowd we wanted to encourage the creation of community projects which make a huge difference to our brilliant borough and we feel that these projects from across the borough really reflect our hopes.

The countdown has begun to European Parliament Elections which will take place on Thursday, May 23.

More than five million people across North West England, including residents in Sefton, will have the opportunity to vote in these elections to select the region’s eight Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).

A full list of candidates for the European Parliament Elections will be published at 5pm on Thursday, April 25.

Joanne Roney OBE, Regional Returning Officer for the European Parliament Elections in the North West, said: “While the circumstances around these elections are somewhat unexpected, this election gives people the opportunity to elect the politicians who will represent them in Europe until such point as the UK leaves the European Union.

“Election teams across the North West are focused on the effective organisation of these elections and we don’t want anyone to miss out on their right to vote because they are not registered.”

The European Parliament Elections are run using a form of proportional representation. Voters have one vote only, and this can be cast for either a political party or an individual candidate.

Each political party puts forward a list of candidates for the North West and the number of MEPs that are elected will depend on the overall share of the vote that a party or individual candidate receives in the region.

MEPs represent the whole of the North West region and so everybody who is eligible to vote in the region will be voting for the same list of parties and candidates.

April Bank Holiday: All You Need To Know this weekend

Thousands of people are expected to visit beautiful Sefton this Bank Holiday weekend (April 19-22) and we’ve put together a list of helpful tips to make the most out of the borough.

Transport

People are strongly advised to plan their journeys as roads are expected to be much busier than normal and we are urging as many people as possible to consider using the wealth of fantastic public transport options

If you are driving through #MySefton, make sure you plan ahead and allow extra time for your journeys and some queues can be expected.

Formby Bypass

The Councils traffic signals contractor has identified an issue with a detection equipment at the junction of the A565 (Formby bypass) and Altcar Road which is currently contributing to delays.

While the contractor is working as quickly as possible to resolve this issue, some delays may be expected during the busy Easter Bank Holiday period and motorists are advised to plan ahead any journeys via this stretch of road.

Shopping

A visit to Sefton is not complete without sampling the shopping and restaurant delights of the borough.

After taking in the fantastic sights each day, why not explore the fantastic array of shops, restaurants and bars which Sefton has to offer?

From the quaint and quirky offerings of Wesley Street and Lord Street in Southport to the hustle and bustle of South Road, Sefton has it all.

The borough’s nightime scene comes alive after 6pm with an array of wine bars, bespoke beer shops and clubs, while Sefton is also renowned for its tasty restaurants and thirst quenching bars.

Rubbish

Sefton is home to many beautiful and picturesque spots and we want to keep it that way. We actively encourage both visitors and residents alike to make sure they are responsible for their own rubbish and dispose of it in a sensible manner.

If you cannot find a bin to dispose of your rubbish responsibly, please take it home with you.
