The Strand shopping centre has unveiled it February Half term activity as it goes Creepy Crawly Crazy!

The Strandā€™s popular craft Zone will be open Tuesday 19th to Thursday 21st of February from 11am ā€“ 2pm making bug crafts and is totally free just simply turn up and join in the fun!

On Wednesday 20th of February The Strand will welcome the brilliant Creepy Crawly Show. The Creepy Crawly Show will be bringing along a range of creatures for shoppers to touch and ask questions about. This interactive activity is also accompanied by a challenge get out and about and get bug hunting to enter the centreā€™s bug hunting competition.

Rowland Parry, Centre Manager commented ā€˜This year we are promoting our Well being theme and embarking on many projects for a wide range of shoppers and retailers alike to improve their general health and well-being. Our half term activity with The Creepy Crawly Show, we hope will not only be informative and fun but will encourage our shoppers and smaller visitors to the centre to get out and about and go on their very own bug hunt. They can bug hunt in their gardens or parks anywhere in the local area. We are looking forward to seeing the photos coming in on our social media as well as meeting some creepy crawlies in the centre.ā€™

Simply visit The Strand and find out some amazing facts about the creatures on show, ask the experts and then go hunting for yourself. The Strand want to see your bug hunting pictures, simply send them to The Strandā€™s facebook page to be in with a chance to win a bug hunting goodie bag including your very own butterfly farm!

The Strandā€™s facebook competition opens on the 20th of February and you have until the 1st of March to get your photos sent into the page to be in with a chance of winning. One image will be selected by The Strand Management team as the winning picture.

Appeal for information following burglary of jewellers in Southport

Detectives are appealing for information following the burglary of a jewellers in Southport in the early hours of this morning, Monday 4 February.

At around 2.50am, the alarm to Rebecca’s Jewellers on Lord Street was activated and patrols attended. A quantity of jewellery was stolen and forensic, CCTV and witness enquiries are ongoing at the scene. Anyone with information is urged to come forward.

Detective Inspector Gary Stratton said: “This is early stages of our investigation and we will be reviewing all CCTV locally and speaking to business owners and anyone with information. If you were in the area and saw or heard anything, let us know.

“We are establishing exactly what was stolen but meantime, I would ask if any individuals or businesses have been or are offered jewellery or watches in the Southport or surrounding areas in the coming days and have any suspicions as to their origin, do the right thing and get in contact.

“This would be distressing and inconvenient experience for any business and we will act on all information to find those responsible and bring them to justice.”

Local residents are being encouraged to learn more about their communities through the new Community Chat events.

Residents can now engage even further with Sefton Council and its many different partners through the Community Chat events that replace the Constituency Forums.

Led by Sefton Council, the Community Chats are a more relaxed way for residents to talk to community groups, agencies, councillors and Council departments about any issues they have.

They will be held in each of the respective Parliamentary Constituencies within Sefton; Bootle, Central Sefton and Southport.

Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member Corporate Services, said: “The Community Chat events are designed as an opportunity for local residents to really learn more about their communities.

“The format will be a market-place style at which there will be a number of tables for community groups, partners, ward Councillors and internal Sefton departments to attend.

“People can move around from table to table depending on their particular needs and learn more about things that affect their community.

“We really hope that this format will benefit our valued local communities so that they can attend in a more relaxed way at which they feel that the Council and its partners are more accessible and friendly.

“Dates for the Constituency Chats have been announced and I really hope people take the time to attend them.”

The planned dates for the Community Chats across Sefton are:

ā€¢ Southport ā€“ Wednesday, February 13 at 6pm in The Atkinson Studio Room
ā€¢ Bootle ā€“ Wednesday, February 27 at 6pm at Bootle Town Hall
ā€¢ Sefton Central ā€“ Thursday, March 7 at 6pm at Formby PDC

Each forum is expected to finish around 8pm.

Volunteers needed to help launch Bootle junior park run

The race has begun to find community volunteers to help launch a junior parkrun in Bootle.

Junior parkrun is a series of 2km events aimed at young people aged 4-14, held in open space and are free, safe and easy to take part every Sunday at 9am.

Active Sefton, in partnership with Parkrun UK, want to launch a regular junior parkrun session at Derby Park.

If youā€™re interested in sports or youth volunteering this could be a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference in your local area.

Budding volunteers are invited to a community meeting at Bootle Cricket Club, Wadham Road on Tuesday February 5, from 7pm.

Sefton Councilā€™s Chief Executive to retire in May

Sefton Councilā€™s Chief Executive Margaret Carney has announced that she will retire in May after 10 years in post.

Margaret, who has worked in local government for more than 40 years, told colleagues and partners that it has been the most difficult decision in her career but feels the time is right to hand over the baton to a new Chief Executive who can build on Seftonā€™s successes.

She said: ā€œIt has been an absolute privilege working with such hardworking, committed and passionate staff, councillors and partners over probably the most challenging period ever for local government and public services.

“I have loved working in Sefton despite the cuts. Not only is it where I work, it is also my home and I have seen first-hand how tirelessly and compassionately staff and councillors have worked to support our communities at a time of great uncertainty and worry.”

Under Margaretā€™s leadership, the Council has continued to provide hundreds of services to its communities and maintained a strong financial track record despite austerity.

She also spearheaded the development of a new and exciting vision for the future of the borough, working closely with partners, businesses, private sector organisations, the voluntary, community and faith sectors and the wider Sefton community. The Vision 2030 was borne and ensures the Council focuses on what is important for the borough and its communities in the future.

Earlier this year, the Council was praised for demonstrating real ambition for Sefton, for its strong track record of partnership working, place leadership and for having such a dedicated, passionate workforce by the Local Government Associationā€™s (LGA) peer review team. This, Margaret says, is a real high to end her career on.

Sefton Council will start the search for a new Chief Executive immediately and Margaret will leave the Council on May 31 under normal retirement rules.
