Bootle firm secures letting at new Mersey Reach development

A Bootle-based precision blade manufacturer has secured a 22,000 sq ft letting at the new Mersey Reach development on Dunnings Bridge Road.

Hardy UK, currently based on Fernhill Road in Bootle, designs and manufactures precision blades for the global leather industry.

Work started on the Mersey Reach development in December and Hardy is scheduled to relocate to their new premises by August 2020.

Mersey Reach is supported by Sefton Council’s business growth team, InvestSefton, and employment and training opportunities will be given to nearby residents through the Sefton@Work programme.

Situated on a 13.5-acre site, the logistics park is strategically located on a prominent gateway route into the docks, with fast access to the M57 and M58.

Once complete, the Mersey Reach logistics park will create up to 350 jobs and is estimated to have a ÂŁ5.5m positive impact on the area.

MerseyReach is being developed by the Warrington office of industrial developer and asset manager Chancerygate.

Chancerygate Development Director and Head of the company’s Warrington office, Mike Walker, said: “It is excellent to welcome a long-established local business such as Hardy UK to Mersey Reach. This is the area’s first new, multi-unit logistics park to be built for years. We are pleased to work closely with Sefton Council and other stakeholders to bring more business, jobs and other opportunities to the area.”

Councillor Marion Atkinson, Sefton Council cabinet member for regeneration and skills, said: “We are delighted with the training and employment opportunities the new Mersey Reach development will bring our residents. It is an exciting time for the borough, with new developments and investment that will benefit everyone across Sefton.”

Plans to boost Sefton’s golfing offer approved by Sefton Council

Sefton is to enhance its golf offer with the addition of two new driving ranges.

New driving range facilities will be constructed at Sefton’s two municipal sites at Bootle Golf Course and Southport Golf Links, broadening the accessibility and affordability of the game in the region.

Work will start on a new driving range at Bootle Golf Course in the spring of this year, with the facility expected to be completed during summer 2020. This follows a consultation in Autumn 2019 with local residents and golf players who highlighted the importance of new practice facilities and investment in course infrastructure.

Phase 2 of the project will see a new facility at Southport Golf Links. This has been approved in principle, subject to a consultation in the coming months.

The ranges will both include a dedicated coaching bay, with the floodlit facilities enabling participants to play into the evening on a ‘pay as you play’ basis.

Sefton Council’s Cabinet formally approved plans to invest £536,360 in the new facilities.

The driving ranges are forecast to generate a surplus of over ÂŁ1m over a 10-year period.

Round and membership prices at both courses have been held at last year’s fees for 2020, with a wider selection of food and drinks available at the on-site golf shops. All existing facilities will remain open to members and non-members during any works.

Plans are also in development to upgrade the buildings at both golf courses to offer improved changing facilities, shop, hospitality and food and drink offerings.

Sefton Council is hoping to attract more young golfers to the two courses and will be offering free-play to under 16s for a period later in 2020.

Cllr Ian Moncur, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “Driving ranges are a great facility for people to learn, practise and play golf. The new driving ranges will enhance Sefton’s municipal courses, which provide affordable, good quality facilities for people to enjoy the sport. The project supports Sefton Council’s 2030 Vision and will encourage new people young and old to participate in golf. The surplus the driving ranges are forecast to generate will enable the Council to invest further in front-line services.”

National Apprenticeship Week at Sefton Council

Across the UK employers and apprentices alike will be celebrating National Apprenticeship Week (February 3 –9).

Sefton Council is proud to be taking part and helping dispel the myths as well as stereotypes surrounding Apprenticeships.

The theme for National Apprenticeship Week 2020 is Look Beyond. The aim is to encourage everyone to look beyond the outdated stereotypes surrounding apprenticeships whilst celebrating the diversity of opportunity and value that they bring. Sefton Council will be highlighting a few apprentices on the Council’s Instagram and Facebook Story features, to show the value that we as an organisation place on apprentices!

An apprenticeship can unlock fantastic long-term career options across a diverse range of roles and industries. Apprentices can be any age, a new employee or a current employee looking to retrain.

Another misconception about apprenticeships is that apprentices are ‘just employed to make the tea’. Today’s apprentices are making impact, not tea!

The game has changed. Every day, right now, thousands of businesses and apprentices are succeeding together. Apprentices get a win-win – real work, in a real company, training to get the skills companies really want, with the bonus of a guaranteed salary.

Employers get to see a fresh injection of talent, keen, inquisitive and bursting with new ideas. Engineering, business administration, agriculture, digital marketing– if you can think of it, there’s probably an apprenticeship available.

So, whoever you are, whatever your background – your new career could be out there. What are you waiting for?

Southport recognised as one of UK’s leading coach-friendly tourism destinations

Southport’s long-established reputation as one of the UK’s most welcoming towns for coaches and groups has once again been confirmed with a place on the shortlist at this year’s British Coach Tourism Awards.

The national awards scheme, launched in 2006, recognises the UK’s most coach-friendly destinations, visitor attractions, hotels and tourism suppliers.

Southport will be battling it out against the south coast resorts of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, the Somerset destinations of Burnham-on-Sea and Wells, and the Yorkshire town of Otley.

Southport has won the award twice in the last 11 years, in 2009 and 2017, and has been a finalist in 2010, 2011, 2014 and 2019. The town was also awarded ‘Coach-Friendly’ status by the Confederation of Passenger Transport UK in 2004.

Cllr Marion Atkinson, Sefton Council Cabinet Member for Regeneration & Skills, said: “Across the UK’s coach and group tourism industry, Southport has long been recognised as being ‘coach friendly’. The ‘Southport Welcome’ travel trade initiative introduced in 2018 continues to highlight the way we look after coaches and groups. This includes our secure coach parking at the Eco Centre on Esplanade, a special Coach Drivers’ Passport, and the development of ‘Southport Pick ‘n’ Mix’, a range of short break itineraries to inspire and encourage tour operators to spend a few days in the town and the surrounding area.”

Cllr Atkinson added: “In 2019 we celebrated 25 years of our unique ‘Meet and Greet’ service that sees our Coach Welcome Hosts boarding coaches from March to October to hand out maps and leaflets. Our entry for the 2020 award focused on the meet and greet and the role it plays as part of the ‘Southport Welcome’.”

The winners of the British Coach Tourism Awards will be announced on 25 March.

Sefton Supported Internship success stories celebrated at Anfield event

The success of young people in Sefton with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) was celebrated at the Liverpool City Region Supported Employment Forum.

The event, held at Liverpool FC’s Anfield home, was attended by over 300 delegates, including supported interns, employers, schools and colleges.

Speakers included former interns from Sefton who have gone on to achieve full-time paid employment, inspiring the next generation of supported interns.

The event was closed by Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram.

Supported Internships help equip young people for future roles with the aim of securing full time work. The programme, now in its fourth year, is delivered in partnership with Hugh Baird College and Southport College in Sefton and links young people with local employers, such as Mersey Care NHS, to help them gain vital experience of the workplace.

Sefton far exceeds the national average for people with SEND in full time employment. Nationally, among 18-64 year olds with a SEND, 6% are in full time work, for 16-24 year olds with a SEND using supported internships in Sefton, that figure jumps to 31%.
