Sefton Council has launched a brand new consultation to seek the views of residents, businesses and visitors to the resort about future improvements to Southport town centre.

In 2020 plans were publicly revealed which would be designed to support Southport’s return to the grandeur of Victorian England, when it was the country’s second most popular tourist destination.

The project, dubbed “Les Transformations de Southport”, aims to support the town’s businesses by improving the connectivity across the whole town centre, including improved pedestrian facilities, better links to the railway station and the creation of new public spaces for hosting events.

Now a consultation has been launched for Phase One of the scheme, seeking out views about public access and how people move and travel through the town centre, as well as looking to gauge support on new public realm enhancements in the Chapel Street and Market areas.

Business owners, schools, visitors, the transport and tourism sectors are being encouraged to contribute their views alongside residents from the wider area around Southport.

People will be asked for their views on a number of areas, including:

• Lighting and benches on Chapel Street
• Improving the appearance of the Southport Station Entrance
• Changes to the Market Street quarter
• Better pedestrian provision on Eastbank Street
• Improved street signage
• Future phases and areas of focus

Cllr Marion Atkinson, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Skills, added: “The town centre is dominated by north-south movements, particularly by vehicles, and there are many competing demands for highway space which can be difficult to accommodate.

“The post Covid-19 decline in public transport use may also create additional pressure on the highway network to accommodate private vehicles.

“ Phase 1 is the beginning of our attempts to address these issues, provide infrastructure which allows for better access, along with the associated health and well-being outcomes.”

As accountable body for the project, Sefton Council will administer the consultation process on behalf of the Southport Town Deal board.

Storm Eunice warning: Road & Park Closures

Marine Drive in Southport will be temporarily closed on Friday (February 18th) as part of Sefton Council’s response to Storm Eunice.

 

A closure will be in pace between the Fairway and Weld Road junctions as a precaution due to high tides and the potential for the road to become temporarily flooded.

 

A number of parks across Sefton will also be closed as a precaution in order to keep visitors safe from any falling trees or branches.

 

Sefton Council will continue to update its communities on any further closures through its normal channels.

 

The Met Office have announced that incredibly strong winds from Storm Eunice will affect Sefton and its coastline from early Friday morning, with weather worsening as the day progresses.

 

As a safety precaution, given the road’s exposed proximity to the coastline, Sefton Council has taken the decision to temporarily close Marine Drive in Southport from Fairway to Weld Road between the hours of 10am and 3pm on Friday (18/02/2022).

Sefton Council is recommending that all travel be kept to a minimum and journeys to only be made if they are essential.

A decision has also been made to close Hall Road Car Park in Blundellsands due to adverse weather conditions. This closure will also take place throughout Friday.

Botanic Gardens, Hesketh Park, Moorside Park, Derby Park and Victoria Park will be closed on Friday and a safety assessment will be carried out at each park prior to reopening

A spokesperson for Sefton Council said: “The UK is going to be seriously affected by Storm Eunice this weekend and Sefton is no exception.

“These pre-emptive closures are designed to keep our communities safe from any harm this storm may cause and we continue to monitor the situation as it develops.

“This means other roads may need to be closed at short notice. We strongly advise people stay away from coastal areas, especially our beaches and unsheltered areas.

“Please only travel if absolutely essential. The stormy weather could cause significant issues to road and rail transport and there is a strong possibility that a number of trees may be brought down by high winds.

“There is also potential for widespread power outages and damage to weakened/loose structures like roof tiles, fences and chimney stacks.”

With the right precautions taken and journeys limited to only essential travel, many residents will be able to safely wait out Storm Eunice, with the worst of the weather passing by Sunday (20/02/2022)

Tickets for Southport Air Show 2022 now on sale with early-bird savings available

Southport’s famous Air Show, which takes place on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th July, offer two full days of fun for all the
family. And if people booking now can take advantage of the reduced early-bird rate.

Under-16s free

This year for the first time, general admission for under 16 years is free while early bird general admission prices for adults are going on sale for just ÂŁ8 and ÂŁ7 at the group rate.

Also new for 2022 are exclusive ticket for the Pier Viewing area where visitors can watch the show from the best seats in the house. Pier View early bird tickets cost ÂŁ18 for adults and ÂŁ9 for children (5-15s).

Daring

Previous years’ Air Shows have featured thrilling and daring aerobatics and visits from a varied line-up of aircraft. They have ranged from majestic tributes by historical planes to the latest fastest, loudest and most powerful modern jets being put through their paces by the world’s top pilots.

Announcements on what will be flying this year are expected soon.

Southport Air Show also feature a whole host of treats on terra-firma. This includes flight simulators, static aircraft to explore to climbing walls, assault courses and even a diving tank with a real-life Marine.

Hugely popular

Cllr Marion Atkinson, Sefton Council’s Labour Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Skills said: “Southport Air Show is a hugely popular event that attracts thousands of people to the town with many of them staying over to enjoy both spectacular days.

“Sadly, we haven’t been able to hold it for two years during the COVID pandemic, so I am delighted that along with our tourism partners we are bringing it back for summer 2022 with some new features such as free admission for Under-16s and the new Pier Viewing area.”

Hosting

In addition to the Air Show, Southport will also be hosting the Food & Drink Festival from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June and the British Musical Fireworks Championship from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th September.

“Once again, entry to the Food & Drink Festival is free and tickets for the Fireworks Championship go on sale soon so watch this space.”

Sefton Council launches Domestic Abuse public consultation

Sefton Council, on behalf of Sefton’s Domestic Abuse Partnership Board, is in the process of completing a Domestic Abuse Needs Assessment to understand the needs of people who experience domestic abuse in Sefton.

The outcomes of the needs assessment will inform future service delivery and help target resources more effectively.

As part of this work, Sefton Council has launched a consultation survey to understand the needs of people who have experienced domestic abuse in Sefton.

Community Domestic Abuse Survey

The survey is a chance for people to tell us about their own experiences and about any services they may have used. This includes understanding any impact that the COVID-19 pandemic may have had on the delivery of services.

The survey can also be completed on behalf of other people, if you know someone who has experienced domestic abuse and tried to help them.

Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, said: “As a Council, we want to make clear that there is no excuse for abuse and that we are completely committed to the elimination of domestic abuse from our society.

“We urge our residents to take part in the survey to ensure we have a full picture of the current services across Sefton and the needs of survivors and children to inform future planning.”

Council tax energy rebate update

Earlier this month, the Government announced support to help households with rising energy bills including a one-off ÂŁ150 energy rebate payment to council tax payers in bands A-D.

Direct Debit

Although the Government has not yet issued detailed guidance for the scheme, The Council understands that eligible households in bands A to D that pay their council tax by Direct Debit may receive their payments first, directly into their bank accounts.

Anyone who doesn’t pay their Council Tax by Direct Debit you can sign up for a Direct Debit here. You will need your council tax account reference to hand.

Paperless e-billing

Council Tax payers in Sefton can opt to receive their bill electronically, which is easier plus it saves paper.

When the Government’s full guidance for the Council tax energy rebate scheme is released, the Council will be providing an update here and on its website at www.sefton.gov.uk/council-tax.
