#SeftonInMind: Sefton Veterans group hold Holistic Support Drop-In

Veterans in Sefton invites former military personnel, reservists and their families to attend its ā€˜Holistic Support’ Drop In held each Thursday from 10am to 4pm.

Held at the StrandByMe Community Shop in Bootle, the drop in provides counselling, meditation and a NAAFI Break all rolled into one location.

NHS South Sefton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) originally funded Veterans in Sefton with its Voluntary Community and Faith Fund through Sefton CVS and more recently the project has received funding from The Royal British Legion. It has now been established with the assistance of Sefton CVS as an individual charity.

Significant impact has been achieved by adopting a ā€œhelicopter viewā€ of the overall needs of an individual and utilising the existing Veterans in Sefton team, with extensive military experience, who understand the specific mental health needs of veterans and have the knowledge in how to handle the stigma attached to mental health.Providing early intervention assessment, counselling and alternative therapies ensures that veterans are guided into the right treatment by the right service whilst the Veterans in Sefton team continue to provide interim professional counselling therapy and respective emotional scaffolding.

This facility promotes early recovery and reduces mental health detrition and the potential need for critical support/hospitalisation.

Every visitor is encouraged to join in a NAAFI style chat over a brew and some ā€œstickiesā€.

A former soldier says: ā€œ3 weeks ago I was an emotional wreck, having the support of ex-military who understood my issues and provided immediate help has turned my life around.ā€

Comedy and Physical Theatre comes to Atkinson with ‘We Are BrontĆ«’

Yorkshire’s most famous siblings get a surreal reimagining in ‘We Are Bronte’ by Publick Transport Theatre.

Two performers get under the skin of the Bronte sisters, and scrape away at the ideas of repression and madness that fill their novels.

Morecambe and Wise meets David Lynch in this madcap reimagining of the BrontĆ« myth, presented in Publick Transport’s playful and irreverent style.

Taking the real and fictitious worlds of Yorkshire’s literary siblings as their inspiration, two performers combine rigorous physical theatre with anarchic comedy to deconstruct not only gothic themes of love, madness and revenge, but also themselves.

Emma Lloyd, The Atkinson said:

ā€œ This production is a funny silly-sweet pastiche that entertains from start to finish. It’s not an adaptation of any one novel but a take on the Brontes. It is a contemporary piece that can be enjoyed by everyone who likes comedy theatre.ā€

Created and performed by Angus Barr and Sarah Corbett; directed by Ed Rapley; dramaturgy by Susie Donkin; additional performance and movement direction by Brenda Waite.

Company members have trained with Philippe Gaulier and LISPA /Jacques Lecoq and between them have worked with Ridiculusmus, Clod Ensemble, Gonzo Moose, Desperate Men, Spitz & Co, DotComedy, Spymonkey, John Nicholson (Peepolykus) and Punchdrunk amongst others.

We Are Brontë comes to The Atkinson on Thursday 5 October at 7.30pm. Tickets are £11 / £9 concessions.

New rate relief scheme can lead to cuts in Business Rates

Qualifying businesses in Sefton can expect to have their business rates cut as a result of a new Rate Relief Scheme announced by Sefton Council.

The rate relief will benefit businesses that have faced the steepest increases in their business rates as a result of the 2017 revaluation undertaken by the independent Valuation Office Agency.

A report was outlining the scheme was agreed at a full council meeting on September 21.

The Revaluation Relief Scheme is effective from April 1, 2017 and will be provided over 4 years but is cash limited based on funding from central Government. Sefton’s allocation of the Government funding for discretionary rate relief is to be Ā£945,838 spread across the next 4 years.

Cllr Paulette Lappin

The assistance will be targeted at those facing significant increases in rates in lower value properties. Normally this would be properties with a rateable value of less than £200,000 with a rates increase of 12.5% or more.

Businesses likely to benefit from this scheme will be contacted by the Council and invited to make an on-line application.

Other new rate relief schemes for qualifying businesses have also been announced in Sefton:

• Up to Ā£1,000 for one year only for Sefton’s pubs with a rateable value of up
to £100,000.
• Any business no longer eligible for Small Business Rate relief to have the rates increases capped at no more than Ā£600 in the first year.
• Ā£1,500 business rates discount for office space occupied by local newspapers for 2 years from April 1, 2017.

Businesses are not expected to make a formal application for these relief schemes but are being contacted by Sefton Council and simply required to confirm to the Council that the property is occupied and used for the purposes of the schemes.

Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member of Regulatory, Compliance and Corporate Services, said:

ā€œI am pleased that Sefton Council has committed to ease the pressure on our local businesses with these new Government funded business rate reliefs.

“We can now target financial support to more businesses where the rates are having an impact on their businesses.ā€

Ratepayers who qualify for the rate relief are obliged to let the Council know if the relief they have received over a rolling three-year period exceeds the State Aid Limit of 200,000 euros.
