Addaction land Sefton substance misuse service contract

A three year contract for the delivery of community-based substance misuse services for young people and families in Sefton has been awarded to Addaction.

The new service is commissioned by Sefton Council and will commence on 1 October 2017.

Addaction is a leading substance misuse and mental health charity, delivering a number of young people’s services across the UK under the banner of Young Addaction.

Addaction has delivered ‘Breaking the Cycle’ (BtC) in Sefton for a number of years. BtC works with families to break the cycle of intergenerational substance misuse. The new contract is a consolidation and expansion of current services. BtC will continue, alongside specialist work with young people.

The core aim of the Sefton service will be to work collaboratively with community partners to help young people and their families create positive, sustainable futures.

Young Addaction will be accessed at community locations across the Borough, including children and family centres and a number of partner agency venues. The service will be delivered at three levels.

Level one will be available to all young people and families, regardless of whether there are current substance misuse issues. It will include advice and information, screening, prevention programmes and diversionary activities.

Level two targeted services will provide early intervention to young people at risk or with low level substance misuse. These will include targeted advice and information, screening and assessment, focused interventions, programmes to enhance social and life skills, family support and referral to specialist services.

Level three is for young people who are using drugs and are affected by a range of risk factors. Interventions will include substance specific harm reduction, psychological and social support and access to pharmacological treatment.

Young Addaction will also work with families where parental substance misuse is a feature or where there are risks of intergenerational substance misuse. Priority will be given to vulnerable families identified by social care, criminal justice or adult substance misuse agencies.

Access to Young Addaction Sefton will be by self-referral or referral by another agency. Locations, contact details and information about the referral process will be disseminated before the end of September.

In the meantime, any queries about the new service can be directed to: Seftoninfo@addaction.org.uk

Don’t trick or mistreat during Halloween and Bonfire night!

Merseyside Police is encouraging young people, families and businesses to play their part in helping to keep their communities safe over the Halloween and Bonfire Night period.

Officers will be patrolling local neighbourhoods to ensure people can enjoy the festivities in their area safely but Merseyside Police cannot do this alone.

Parents and guardians are also being asked to help by taking responsibility for their children’s whereabouts and actions and to be mindful of any neighbours who may be elderly or vulnerable and who might feel frightened or intimidated.

Shopkeepers are also being urged not to sell any items that could be misused to cause damage – such as eggs, flour and cans of shaving foam or spray paint.

The force has also designed a short video – aimed at schoolchildren and young people – entitled ‘Don’t Trick or Mistreat’ – which shows the consequences of antisocial behaviour and the people who may be affected by it.

Chief Inspector Chris Hitchell, who is heading this year’s operation for Merseyside Police said:

“This is always a fun time of year and we want to make sure that everyone can enjoy the organised events and activities safely.

“We know that antisocial behaviour is of concern to people, particularly those who are old and vulnerable, and I want to reiterate my message that we will take robust action against those found committing antisocial acts.”

Still time to have your say on joining up Family and Children’s Centres

There is still time for families to have their say on Sefton Council’s consultation to join up Family and Children’s Centres, which you can complete online

The idea behind the proposals is to make sure that children and young people aged 0-19 years can find the right support, for the right issue at the right time.

The consultation runs until November 17 and anyone who is interested in the proposals are being encouraged to give their views.

Cllr John Joseph Kelly, Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Safeguarding, said:

“We must stress that the proposals we are consulting on are not about closure. Some of the options for re-location need further discussion and we want to hear what our communities think about our plans to provide inclusive Family Wellbeing Centres for 0-19 year olds and their families.

“Communities have told us that we need to be more joined up, most recently through the consultation on Imagine Sefton 2030. We have listened to this feedback and developed these plans on the back of what people have told us.

“While no decisions have yet been made, we believe the proposals will make the most of the money that we have available, allowing us to support those most in need while offering families, children and young people the opportunity to enjoy many health and wellbeing activities.”

To take part in the consultation, please visit sefton.gov.uk or go directly to a Children’s and Family Centre, a Sefton library or leisure centre where paper copies can be filled in and shared with us.

Families can also directly discuss the proposals at the consultation engagement sessions taking place across the borough. A number of sessions have already taken place and upcoming dates include:
• Netherton Children’s Centre and Family Centre, every Wednesday from 9.30am-11.30am, and every Thursday from 12.45pm-2.45pm.
• Freshfield Children’s Centre, 1 November, from noon-1pm.
• Springwell Park Children’s Centre, 3 November, at 2.30pm.
• Linaker Children’s Centre in Southport, 6 November, from 9am-10.30am
• Cambridge Children’s Centre, 7 November, from 1pm-2pm.

Feedback from this consultation will be considered by Cabinet in December 2017.

Hundreds join #SeftonSelfie campaign to celebrate our beautiful coast

There is still time to join hundreds of coast lovers who are getting behind our #SeftonSelfie campaign.

We have been inundated with images, snaps, selfies and stunning shots of families, community groups and animals enjoying the 22 miles of our beautiful coastline

The photographs will be collected together and the very best ones will form a huge collage to commemorate the end of Sefton’s Year of the Coast campaign.

Montages will then be displayed across some of Sefton Council’s iconic buildings.

Councillor Paul Cummins, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and coast champion, said:

“Each year thousands of people come to our beautiful borough to enjoy the coast.

“By making 2017 Sefton’s Year of the Coast, we have been working alongside our many partners to showcase everything associated with the coast – highlighting all the events that take place on this amazing stretch of land.

“To mark the end of such a great campaign we want as many people as possible to send in their sandy selfies, picnic portraits, sunset snaps and more to form a wonderful collage to
commemorate the Year of the Coast.

“We hope the collage will be the pinnacle of a lasting legacy to future generations to encourage them to continually use and love our coast.”

Stretching more than 22 miles from Bootle to Southport, the Sefton coast is filled with unique sand dunes, wonderful wildlife, woodlands and amazing art.

To get involved in the competition, submit your snaps to our official Sefton Council Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages, using the hashtag #SeftonSelfie. You can also submit photographs to communications@sefton.gov.uk.
