Sefton residents invited to health commissioners’ meetings

Health commissioners in Sefton are inviting local residents with an interest in their work to come along to their next governing body meetings.

NHS Southport and Formby Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and NHS South Sefton CCG hold their bi-monthly governing body meetings in public, so that people can listen to the discussions and the decision making processes of the doctors, nurses and other health professionals that make up these forums. 

Dr Rob Caudwell, local GP and chair of NHS Southport and Formby CCG, said: â€œAs always, members of the public are encouraged to attend our governing body meetings. At these meetings you will be able to listen to us make decisions and will learn about the developments happening in the area.”

Dr Craig Gillespie, local GP and chair of NHS South Sefton CCG, said: “Attending one of our governing body meetings is a good way to find out about the work that’s been happening in Sefton over the past couple of months and to learn about our plans for the future.

“The decisions we make at these meetings have an impact on the whole community, that’s why everyone is encouraged to attend.”

NHS Southport and Formby CCG’s governing body meeting will take place on Wednesday 4 September at the Family Life Centre, Ash St, Southport, Merseyside at 1pm. Papers will be made available here beforehand.  

NHS South Sefton CCG’s governing body meeting will take place on Thursday 5 September at Merton House, Stanley Road in Bootle at 1pm. Papers will be made available here beforehand.

M58 improvement works update: Evening lane closures likely

Some evening lane closures and diversions will be in place on the M58 as improvement works continue.

Sefton Council’s contractors, John Sisk and Sons, are making progress on the construction of the two slip roads at Junction 1 of the M58 providing a northbound off slip and a southbound on-slip.

Necessary works on the motorway will start on Tuesday, August 27 and last until Wednesday, September 4. They will be carried during the night, between 9pm and 5.30am, and will include some lane closures, and on some nights, full closures of the motorway. Diversion routes will be in place

As well as improving journey times between Maghull and North Liverpool, it is hoped the scheme will reduce traffic on the A59 and some residential roads and facilitate potential future development in the Maghull area.

Essential safety works start on Coronation lanterns

Essential works are set to take place to remove three structurally unsound lighting columns on Lord Street, Southport.

Surveys of all three coronation columns, which were erected along the main boulevard in 1953 to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, have found signs of considerable structural wear and tear.

As a result, works will now take place on Wednesday, August 28 to remove all three defective columns as a matter of paramount public safety.

The commemorative coronation lanterns, which adorn the top of the columns, will be retained and restored by the local authority ahead of them being reinstated on new columns. 

A spokesman for Sefton Council said: “While the Coronation lamps are a fantastic part of our borough’s heritage, the safety of the public is paramount and the columns need to be removed.

“Our contractors will be working diligently to make sure all three lanterns, which are the focal point of the coronation lamps, will be safely recovered and restored with intention of being reinstated at a later date.

“When the columns were first erected over 66 years ago, 2019 seemed such a long time away and in that time they have naturally weathered to a point where they are no longer considered structurally sound. 

“Due to the nature of the works, we expect there may be some minimal disruption to road users while cranes and equipment are put in place.”

The coronation lamps are situated at the junctions of Duke Street, Eastbank Street and Manchester Road respectively.

Successful night of community reassurance and disruption activity in south Sefton

Officers were joined by members of the public, MP Peter Dowd, Councillor Trish Hardy and members of Sefton Council for an evening of community reassurance and disruption activity in south Sefton last night, Wednesday, 21 August.

Around 5,000 leaflets were distributed in the area after briefings at Derby Park in Bootle, Bowersdale Park in Seaforth, Kirkstone Road North in Litherland and Marian Square in Netherton.

A number of arrests and seizures were also made following warrants and stop searches.

-Two men aged 47 and 40, both from Litherland were arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs and possession of cannabis following a warrant at an address in Bleasdale Way, Litherland. A quantity of suspected heroin, crack cocaine, cannabis and cash were recovered.

-A 37-year-old man from Netherton was arrested on suspicion of possession of heroin and drug driving following the stop-search of a vehicle.
Following the subsequent search of a property in St James Drive, the male was further arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs. Two women aged 45 and 32 were also arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs and a quantity of suspected heroin and cash were recovered.

-Three men aged 24, 26 and 28 were arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A and B drugs following the search of a property in Moore Street. A cannabis farm of around 20 plants and suspected cocaine were recovered.

 The events are an opportunity for residents to find out about the work that their local CCG has carried out in the past year. Attendees are also invited to share their experiences of local health services and give their views about the CCGs’ latest and forthcoming programmes and plans for the next 12 months. 

Dr Craig Gillespie, local GP and NHS South Sefton CCG chair, said: “These events give people the chance to have a chat with their local health commissioners and share their feedback about our plans. We will also combine these events with our Annual General Meeting (AGM), so people can find out about how well we have performed during the past year.”

 Dr Rob Caudwell, local GP and NHS Southport and Formby CCG chair, said: “There will also be a ‘marketplace’ of information stalls promoting local health, care and support services. Some of the services attending the events will include Macmillan, Healthwatch Sefton and a 7-day GP extended access.

 â€œThe feedback we receive during these kinds of events is really useful. I encourage anyone that is interested in finding out more about local health services and commissioning, and who is interested in sharing their views on these topics, to attend one of our ‘Big Chat’ events.”

 The ‘Big Chat’ events will take place on:

  • NHS Southport and Formby CCG: Tuesday 10 September, 1pm to 4.30pm at The Bliss Hotel (formerly the Ramada Hotel) adjacent to Floral Hall on the waterfront in Southport, PR9 0DZ.
  • NHS South Sefton CCG: Thursday 12 September, 1pm to 4.30pm at Bootle Cricket Club, Wadham Road, L20 2DD.

Residents are encouraged to attend the event for their local CCG in order to get the most relevant information.
