Sefton shortlisted for prestigious local government award

Sefton Council has been shortlisted for a prestigious public sector award for part of their response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The local authority’s ICT Client Team in partnership with Procurement colleagues, swung into action at the beginning of the pandemic, to ensure the council’s core functions could remain active. Now more than a year later they are proud finalists of the 2021 GO Awards, which celebrates the very best procurement achievements from across the UK’s public, private and third sector organisations.

Sefton are finalists in the COVID-19 Outstanding Response Award category after judges were impressed with the way the council managed to transform it’s historically physical office based contact centre into a bespoke, virtual system within 12 working days.

It took just two day’s for Sefton Council’s ICT Client team, working alongside the Procurement team, to find, assess and obtain an entirely new cloud based telephone system, allowing for a seamless and cost effective transition of services, meaning the most vulnerable and in need residents were still given the support they needed without delay.

Sefton secured 8×8, a world renowned VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) provider who worked with the local authority to quickly install a brand new system allowing for our dedicated contact centre staff to work safely from home while continuing to do their jobs.

Cllr Ian Maher, Leader of Sefton Council, said: “For some time we had been looking into how we could make our customer interface more agile but the urgent need for a fully functioning remote contact centre arose with the sudden arrival of the COVID 19 pandemic.

“This meant we had to act fast in order to maintain vital services to our residents and communities.

“Traditionally proper procurement and ICT works take time but by utilising national frameworks and the skill of our expert officers, we were able to carry out an entire procurement process from start to finish in just 48 hours.

“COVID-19 has created huge challenges for the public sector and will have a lasting impact on Sefton as a borough for years to come.

“Nevertheless the outbreak of the pandemic presented a moment to rethink and transform specific services, which in the long term will help in the council’s economic recovery while maintaining vital resources and support for our communities.

“The ‘new normal’ calls for extra safety, greater agility and enhanced services for our residents, businesses and partners— which is what we have achieved with 8×8, thanks in no small part to our amazing ICT Client team, procurement team and contact centre workers.

“We are delighted to have been shortlisted for the GO Awards and we look forward to the final in September.”

Jamie Snaddon, Managing Director, EMEA at 8×8, said: “The speed and agility with which Sefton Council completely transformed their historically on-premises contact centre into one that is cloud-based, remotely accessible, and allows for full connectivity is truly incredible. We are thrilled to have been a part of Sefton Council’s positive efforts to transform the services it delivers to the community.”

Sefton approves Child Poverty Strategy to combat impact of pandemic

As part of work to combat the effects of child poverty, which have been worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, Sefton Council’s Cabinet has approved the development of a Child Poverty Strategy.

Developing the Strategy, in partnership with The Welfare Reform and Anti-Poverty Partnership, will help redress the impact of poverty on young people in Sefton from the COVID pandemic and Government welfare reforms.

Among its aims will be work to prevent families falling into poverty, and support to help those already in difficulty.

Resilience

Increasing family income and improving opportunities for employment and building resilience in local communities against the causes of poverty are key aims of the Strategy. Improving mental wellbeing, addressing stigma and exclusion and improving digital inclusion are also among its objectives.

The Council will work across the statutory, community, voluntary and faith sectors to ensure services are put in place to support families.

Impact

Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing said: “Poverty has the largest impact on infant mortality and during childhood, it is the first step to poor physical and mental health.

“More families in Sefton falling into the absolute or relative low-income category, eligibility for free school meals has risen during the pandemic and we have seen that the increase in Universal Credit has not been enough to bridge the gap for working families in poverty.

“Additionally, there is a high level of jobs in Sefton in the retail, healthcare, hospitality and leisure sectors which tend to be lower paid. These are also roles less likely to be possible to carried out from putting those people at higher risk of exposure to COVID-19. And, research shows a low income makes people significantly more likely to experience mental health illness.

Saddened

Cllr Hardy continued: “Although I am saddened that in 2021, we are forced into the situation where we need to develop a Child Poverty Strategy, I am pleased that doing so will help the Council to focus on lobbying for change to protect the most vulnerable children and young people in the Borough.”

“As the largest investment project included within the Southport Town Deal, the Marine Lake Events Centre, a working title suggested by one of the hundreds of schoolchildren who responded to the targeted consultation on the project, will provide Southport with an incredible events space with state-of-the-art facilities to attract a continuous and wide range of different types of entertainment events and audiences to the resort.
.
“The Light Fantastic show will provide a walkway into the lake as part of an incredible water, light and sound show which won’t just complement the Events Centre, but will also prove to be an attraction in its own right to further elevate and distinguish the Southport brand.

“Sefton Council and our partners on the Town Deal Board want to see Southport transformed in to a thriving, vibrant visitor destination.

“We want to give people a reason to visit and stay for longer. We believe that attractions such as this, our new events space, and more, will create a genuinely unique visitor experience and will only serve to strengthen our visitor economy.”

Steve Rotheram, Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, said: “Like many people, I’ve got lots of happy memories of going to Southport as a kid. It’s great to see these exciting projects to help breathe new life into the town moving forwards.
