The August edition of the Sefton Community Newsletter, put together by Merseyside Police’s community engagement team, is now available to read online.

Highlights of this month’s newsletter include details on a special Older People’s Day at Southport & Formby District General Hospital on October 3, the latest on a host of activities at the Netherton Activity Centre and a detailed feature on Sefton Council’s Affordable Warmth scheme.

Crosby Scouts create ‘secret’ garden to help people with mental health issues

Young Sefton residents have ‘adopted’ a stretch of the Leeds Liverpool Canal in an effort to help people with mental health issues.

Scouts from the Thornton based, 4th Crosby & District St William of York group have helped to transform the location by organising litter-picks and planting flowers. They invite locals who may have mental health problems to join them in the hope that they may be encouraged to talk openly or simply to get outside and enjoy the space.

Working in partnership with other agencies, including: The Canal & River Trust, The Desmond Family Canoe Trail, Mind and Merseyside Police,  the scouts pledged to create a space where people could go and talk.

The project formed part of ‘A Million Hands, a national initiative that has encourage half a million scouts to work together to make a difference in their local community.

The adopted section can be found near Rimrose Valley Country Park in Litherland, not far from the bridge by Kirkstone Road West.

Southport arts group to host Remembrance Weekend multimedia exhibition

As part of the ongoing 100 Years commemorations to mark the end of World War One, Southport based group Trinity Arts are putting together a special exhibition on the Great War.

This year marks the centenary of the end of World War One and, as a mark of remembrance, Trinity Arts, based at Holy Trinity Church on Hoghton Street, will be putting on a special display featuring Southport stories and photos of the time.

There will also be  dance, drama, talks, poetry, a special service, and silhouettes.

Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust granted the maximum number of Silhouettes for use, as part of its national aim to bring communities together to “remember those who went to war and did not return.”

Taking place on the weekend of November 10 & 11, the exhibition also includes:

  • Live poetry readings with people dressed as WW1 soldiers.
  • Original artwork
  • Items from WW1 on display including original cigarette boxes, a cartoon book featuring soldiers, medals and more.

Bob Ball, Secretary of Trinity Arts, said, “Obviously this Remembrance is especially important as it marks 100 years since the end of World War 1 and we wanted to do something special to commemorate that moment.

“We had men from Holy Trinity go to war, and not return, and so the award of the Silhouettes is really wonderful as this will bring home to people the poignancy of those times.”

Aquathlon heads back to Southport!

Sefton Council’s Active Workforce team are excited to bring it’s successful Aquathlon challenge back to Southport – and it’s open for everyone.

On Sunday, September 9, the Aquathlon event will consist of a 250m swim at Dunes Splashworld, followed by a 2.5km run around Victoria Park.

The race will start in waves from 9am onwards and costs just £15 per entry. Active Workforce members pay a reduced rate of £10. Participants can also complete the event as a relay team of two, with one person completing the swim and the other completing the run.  

To register your place call the team on 0151 934 2079 or email active.workforce@sefton.gov.uk. Payments can be taken securely over the phone with credit or debit card details or alternatively at Dunes leisure centre reception.

Sefton helps hundreds of families to access school uniform banks

Generous residents across Sefton have once again helped keep vital school uniform banks topped up with donations.

This is the sixteenth year that Swops, Sefton’s school uniform bank scheme, has been running and it continues to go from strength to strength thanks to donations from people across the borough.

Clothing items both old and new are accepted at Sefton run libraries and Town Halls throughout the year and are then distributed to families and children in need.

Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, said: “In a perfect world we would not need food banks or school uniform banks but, sadly, they are a necessity.

“In the last academic year we helped over four hundred schoolchildren and their families get access to much needed uniforms, from shoes to summer dresses and shorts.

“This scheme would not be able to continue without the support of our kind hearted residents.

“Through their contribution we have been able to help those most in need and will continue to do so for as long as possible.”
