Road Safety, Traffic Management and Enforcement – Keeping the city moving in the run up to Christmas

Merseytravel, Stagecoach and Arriva buses, Liverpool City Council, Merseyside Police and Halton Transport are working together once again to reduce traffic congestion and keep the city centre moving in the lead up to Christmas and throughout December.

The aim is to support the city region’s economy by reducing illegal parking and monitoring traffic flow to prevent gridlock and make sure that bus services remain as punctual as possible. By working together in this way last year, congestion-causing incidents fell by more than a third (38 per cent) compared with the same period the previous year.

Illegal parking, which causes traffic congestion at busy times, is being addressed through parking enforcement in ‘hot spot’ areas. Bus operators and highways staff will also report illegal parking that they see causing a problem, and PCSO and police officers will stop vehicles from dropping off in bus stops and road junctions, and from blocking yellow box junction markings in the city centre.

This is the third year that this way of working to share information and resources has been used and has proved to be more effective than if each agency had worked alone. The joint initiative is believed to be the first of its kind in the country.

Cllr Liam Robinson, Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Transport Portfolio Holder, said:

â€œResults from last year’s initiative show that this way of working is effective in helping commuters and shoppers to get around more easily and also addresses the resulting air pollution that congestion can cause.

“We encourage people to play their part too by leaving their cars at home and sticking to public transport wherever possible,

Managing Director of Arriva Merseyside, Howard Farrall said:

“We welcome this initiative to help the reliability and punctuality of our services which are key to our customers and helps to reduce congestion. The more people we can encourage to use public transport, the better for the environment we live in and the air we breathe.

Rob Jones, managing director at Stagecoach Merseyside, Cheshire and South Lancashire, said:

“This Christmas, we are encouraging everyone to make a more sustainable and convenient transport choice. One full Stagecoach double decker bus alone can take up to 75 cars off the road which will help to reduce city centre air pollution and speed up journey times.

“Stagecoach buses will be operating across the holiday season. Whether it’s to see friends and family or to grab a bargain in the sales, our services will be running throughout. Customers will be able to leave their cars home and enjoy the festivities without the worry of expensive car parking fees or potential fines.

“We will be keeping passengers informed with live traffic updates over the busy Christmas period on the website at www.stagecoachbus.com, on Twitter and on our new Stagecoach Bus App.”

Merseyrail ticket fares still some of the lowest in the country following 2020 fare increase

Merseyrail ticket fares are still some of the lowest in the country, despite an average increase of 2.86 per cent for 2020.

The rail operator will protect its popular Family Ticket by freezing its price at £11 for the fourth consecutive year – ensuring families can enjoy affordable days out across the Liverpool City Region.

Return tickets for journeys within the Merseyrail network will rise by an average of 2.8 per cent. Railpass will also rise by 2.8 per cent for 2020.

Suzanne Grant, Commercial Director at Merseyrail, said: “We are proud to offer the most affordable and punctual rail service in the country, continually improving our ticket offer with new products coming in the next 12 months such as the Merseyrail Only Railpass.

“While there is a rise in ticket prices, 98 per cent of fares are reinvested back into the railway, which allows us to improve the network and continue to provide our passengers with a reliable, high quality service.”

In the spring 2019 National Rail Passenger Survey, Merseyrail was voted as one of the most reliable networks offering some of the best value for money tickets in the country.

The operator has also been hailed as the most punctual rail operator in the country for the year-to-date of 2019.

Spare a gift for a child this year and get behind the Mayor’s Christmas Toy Appeal

You can make Christmas extra special for some of Sefton’s vulnerable children by getting behind the Mayor’s Christmas Toy appeal.

Each year thousands of toys, gifts and stocking fillers are lovingly donated by kind hearted residents from across the borough and given to our most deserving families.

New gifts unwrapped for children of all ages, can be taken to either Bootle, Maghull or Southport Town Halls or dropped off at any Sefton Council library or leisure centre by Wednesday Dec 18.

Residents can also donate at the Asda store in Bootle and Southport. Gift tokens are particularly welcome to be given to older children.

All presents will then be distributed to children and young people throughout the borough by volunteers from Sefton Council and Sefton Children’s Trust on behalf of the Mayor.

Cllr June Burns, the Mayor of Sefton, said: “The generosity of the people of Sefton is amazing and every year thousands of people donate a present to the annual Mayor’s Christmas Gift Appeal.

“Putting smile on a little one’s face at Christmas is one of the best things a person could do and so I urge as many people as possible to get involved.

“Any donation is welcome and we are looking for gifts for all ages from babies and toddlers to teens.

“To ensure we can get the right gift to the right child may I please ask that the gifts be new and are left unwrapped.”
