Council responds to circulation of misleading documents on Orrell Mount Park consultation

Sefton Council has responded to reports that misleading documents are being circulated about its consultation on a new masterplan for Orrell Mount Park.

Doctored

After doctored versions of Council leaflets and other items emerged, a Sefton Council spokesperson said: “It is disappointing that rather than allowing people to express their views on the masterplan for redeveloping the whole of Orrell Mount Park, some people opposed to it are doctoring documents in order to influence and mislead those who may wish to take part.

“Having listened to local people, the Council has drawn up the masterplan and engaged leading specialist management consultancy FMG Consulting to carry out the consultation so that everyone, including those who disagree with the proposals, to put forward their views.

Misleading

“It seems, however, from doctored leaflets and other documents being circulated that whoever is producing them is seeking to influence the outcome of the consultation by misleading people and, perhaps, trying to discourage them from having their say. This includes telling them how to answer the consultation questions rather than enabling them to express their own views, and including answers they suggest people copy and paste for certain questions.

“The final masterplan will be dependent on the outcome of the consultation and what people tell us they want, which is exactly why, in line with how the Council has redeveloped other parks in the past. The Council have purposefully highlighted that funding is not confirmed for some elements. However, as has happened previously, once we have seen the outcome of the consultation, we will then seek funding to deliver what people have told us they want.

Authentic

“We would encourage everyone who has a view on the future of Orrell Mount Park to visit www.sefton.gov.uk/orrellmount where they can find authentic information and provide their feedback.

“Three drop-in sessions about the proposals were held on Thursday 9th June and three more are planned for Monday 11th July.”

Taking place on Tuesday, 28 June, the event will consist of a 5km run or walk around the perimeter of Crosby Marina. As runners make their way around the lake, they will be able to take in the sights of Crosby beach.

The Challenge will begin at 6pm and costs just ÂŁ15 per entry. Active Workforce members will pay a reduced rate of ÂŁ10.

The event, which has been running since 2008, is open to all abilities, with the option to run, walk or stroll the 5km distance. Previous years have seen up to 500 people take part and the Active Workforce team are hoping to see a good turn out this year.

A number of Sefton councillors have already signed up for the Challenge and will be joined by Chief Executive of Sefton Council Dwayne Johnson.

Active Workforce hopes to encourage members of the public to get out and get active while spending time with colleagues, friends and family. The aim of the 5km Challenge is to be a fun event that anyone can enter and complete at their own pace.

Cllr Ian Moncur, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing said:

“I am delighted to be taking part in the Active Workforce 5km Challenge.

“The team have been working incredibly hard to create events that are accessible to everyone, no matter their ability or experience. This challenge isn’t a contest, it’s about exercising at your own rate.

“It is so important to get outside and maintain a healthy lifestyle and this is something we always look to encourage through events such as this.

“I hope we’ll see a great turnout for what should be a fantastic event.”

To request an entry form, people should contact active.workforce@sefton.gov.uk. Anyone wanting to get involved needs to contact Active Workforce before Friday 24 June to be guaranteed a place.

Healthwatch Sefton looking for new chairperson

Sefton Council for Voluntary Service is seeking a new chairperson to continue and develop the work of Healthwatch Sefton.

Healthwatch Sefton works to make sure that NHS leaders listen to and use local residents’ feedback to improve future care. Last year, they helped nearly a million people have their say and get the support they needed.

The non-profit is part of a national network, who address the key health and care areas with the Department of Health and other national organisations.

Healthwatch Sefton is looking for a chairperson to help them to continue in their mission to help people to get advice, share their experiences and drive further improvements in care.

The successful candidate will be someone with drive, energy and enthusiasm as well as an understanding and experience of governance at a senior or board level. The chairperson will also have a seat on the Sefton Health and Well Being Board and will need to take a leadership role within the newly emerging health and care system.

The role will include leading and further developing Healthwatch Sefton, working as one of the Directors, chairing the Board, chairing the operational Steering Group and working with other partners to set the strategic plan and direction.

Volunteer expenses will be paid, but the position itself is voluntary and unpaid. In order to apply, you must not be employed by an NHS organisation or by Sefton Council.

On average, the role will require 40 hours per month, but this can change each month depending on the workload and any meetings.

Applications for this role close on Wednesday 15 June. If you’re interested in applying, or want to find out more visit the Sefton CVS website.

Sefton Council thanks volunteers for immense contribution during Volunteer’s Week 2022

Sefton Council is saying “thank you” to the hundreds of volunteers who give up their spare time to give back to the Borough, as Volunteer’s Week 2022 comes to an end.

During an exceptionally difficult couple of years, people in Sefton have taken the time to volunteer and make a huge difference to their communities – just as they do every year.

The contribution of volunteers is often unseen and unrecognised by many, visible only through the incredible impact of their volunteering. However, the coronavirus pandemic has rightly raised the profile of volunteering and more people than ever are aware of the immense contribution being made every single day by volunteers.

Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, has paid tribute to the Borough’s volunteers, saying they set a shining example to our communities.

Cllr Hardy said: “Just this past weekend alone we saw many wonderful community events organised by volunteers to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee weekend.

“Thank you to all Sefton volunteers, both past and present! And to those who are considering taking up a volunteering role in the future, I can only stress how vital and appreciated your support will be, whatever you choose to do.”

If anyone would like to volunteer their time, there are so many opportunities to volunteer across Sefton.

Sefton CVS manage Volunteer Centre Sefton and it is a great resource to find out more about what opportunities are out there.  Head to the Volunteer Centre Sefton website to find out how you can get involved.
