Cabinet welcomes Salt and Tar rebrand ahead of busy Bootle Canalside events programme

Later this year, top comedians Jason Byrne, Jo Caulfield and Scott Bennett and local band Red Rum Club will appear at Comedy and Music festivals at Salt and Tar, the new brand for Bootle’s Canalside events space agreed by Sefton Council’s Cabinet today.

Comedy Weekender

Salt and Tar’s emerging 2023 events programme includes the three-day Comedy Weekender. Chris McCausland, Daliso Chaponda, Nina Gilligan and Brendan Riley will also be appearing at the May event which will be held in a 500-seat marquee.

Red Rum Club will be just one of the bands appearing at the Music Festival, which will take place over two weekends in July.

A full programme for the coming year, including A Food and Drink Festival, outdoor cinema screenings, community events and live music, markets and beer festivals and a Christmas event is being developed.

Heritage

At their meeting this morning, Sefton Council’s Cabinet agreed the new Salt and Tar brand that has been developed for the Canalside as part of an updated Strategy and Business Plan. It refers to Bootle’s rich industrial heritage, with the Brotherton’s Tar Distillery on Hawthorne Road and the area’s historic link to the salt trade.

When questioned, people said Salt and Tar was ‘easy to remember’ and ‘short, sweet, and creative’. They also described it as being ‘catchy and flows well’ and ‘something you would remember,’.

At this morning’s meeting, Cllr Marion Atkinson, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Skills said:
“Events already held at Bootle Canalside have shown us that they attract people to The Strand and the town centre so I’m pleased to see this important step forward in developing this impressive new brand for the area and the beginnings of an exciting programme for 2023.

“Anyone visiting the site will see that work is underway, the fence along the canal has already been removed with plans to provide an attractive entertainment complex with covered areas, bars and food outlets and canalside access scheduled for completion later this year.”

Revitalisation

The development of Salt and Tar branding and events programme is part of Sefton Council’s work to cement the area’s role and contribute to the revitalisation of The Strand and wider Bootle town centre economy.

Sefton Council submitted a bid to the Government’s Levelling Up Fund in July for a £20 million to underpin a regeneration scheme to transform Bootle town centre, focused on The Bootle Strand and canalside area. The Government is now expected to announce the outcome of the Levelling Up bidding process early in 2023.

Concept design illustrating what the future re-purposed Strand could look and feel like.Today’s Cabinet meeting also approved a new Business Plan for The Strand, which sets out how re-purposing The Strand will create an enhanced and more diversified town centre, support the growth of a night-time economy and deliver new amenities needed by local people and businesses.

Health, education, and technology

Among the proposed changes are better retail provision and the introduction of alternative uses including health, education, and technology. Additionally, the adjacent Canalside site will continue to be developed, along with the introduction of new green corridors and improvements to The Strand’s public spaces.

Generating an evening and night-time economy through new leisure food and drink uses will increase the time shoppers and visitors spend at The Strand. This will help encourage the return of businesses to the Town Centre.

The Cabinet report also provided an overview of the impacts of the cost of living crisis on the retail sector and particularly on Bootle, where the inflation rate for residents will be higher than the national rate – 12%, compared to 9% for the wealthiest households – as local residents spend a higher proportion of their household budget spend on staples such as food and energy.

When the plans were unveiled in December, Cllr Ian Maher, Leader of Sefton Council said: “As landlord of The Strand, Sefton Council is in a position to develop this exciting medium and long-term vision for growth at the heart of Bootle which the private sector has historically failed to do. Our intervention will make this happen for our community.

“Our vision reflects local ambitions and aspirations to generate positive economic, social and environmental outcomes for people in the town and where deprivation means the effects of the national cost of living crisis hits particularly hard.

“The particularly harsh effect the national cost of living crisis is having on many Bootle households reinforces the importance of investment to support town centre recovery and resilience.

“What we need is the Government to work with us on this important regeneration project to breathe a new lease of life into an area that is among the most deprived and hardest hit by COVID in the country.  A positive start would be to support us by approving our Levelling Up Fund bid.

“We are determined to build on successes such as this and are committed to ongoing engagement with local people, businesses and other stakeholders to ensure our plans continue to reflect what they need and want to see.”

Sefton care homes invited to benefit from new round of grants

Sefton Council is launching a new round of Care Home Improvement Grants to help improve care home facilities across the Borough.

The Grant Programme, which gives care homes the opportunity to make facilities more dementia friendly and support living experiences, demonstrates Sefton Council’s continued commitment to backing the local nursing and residential care home sector and improve the quality of its offering to service users.

A flyer detailing the Sefton Care Homes Capital Improvement Programme.Care Homes in Sefton can apply for a grant of up to ÂŁ25,000 to make their facilities more dementia friendly.

Applications are expected to contain projects that will improve outdoor or communal areas within care homes making them more dementia friendly to allow for more social interaction and activities. Sefton Council is also encouraging those who apply to consider technological equipment that can improve residents’ quality of life and digital solutions to support a greener carbon footprint and energy efficiency.

This round of grants is the third of the Programme.

The Care Home Improvement Grants in rounds one and two benefitted 58 care homes across Sefton, and the Council expects more care homes to benefit from the Grants Programme in round three.

Thornton Lodge in Crosby was one of 36 care homes to receive a grant in round one of the funding. They used it to install new seating and raised flower beds in their communal garden providing residents with greater ownership over their space. The home also installed a turfed bowling green after asking residents what features they would like to see.

Cambridge Court Care Home in Waterloo used their grant to create a hair salon for residents to visit, as well as improving their outdoor area. The salon has proved to be popular with residents, with numerous residents saying that they go at least once a week to get their hair done.

Speaking about the changes, one resident said: “We love our garden and I love to do my morning exercise while listening to the birds sing.”

Another care home that received a grant in round one of the Programme was Good Companions, who used the money to incorporate interactive tables, robotic pets and therapy dolls into their home.

Cllr Cummins, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care said: “I am delighted that Sefton Council are, once again, able to offer grants to care home providers in the borough.

“We have already seen some great improvements to the lives of care home residents, particularly for those living with dementia.

“There has been great innovation in the use of technology, and imagination in the design of environments, making them dementia friendly.

“It’s been heart-warming to hear how the grants have already helped to make people’s everyday lives better.

“This new round of grants will give even more opportunities to care home providers who have fantastic ideas about how to improve their residents’ quality of life.”

Round three of the Care Home Improvement Programme is open to care homes in Sefton now. More information is available at www.sefton.gov.uk/care-home-grants

Safeguarding Adults Week gets off to an URL-y start with new website

Sefton Safeguarding Adults Partnership Board is marking the start of Safeguarding Adults Week with the launch of its new website.

We're supporting Safeguarding Adults Week. Sefton Safeguarding Adults Partnership Board. The Board brings together leaders and representatives from local organisations to ensure that safeguarding services for adults across Sefton are high quality.

The partnership includes representatives from Merseyside Police, Sefton Council, Merseyside Fire & Rescue, the Probation Service, NHS agencies and a number of voluntary sector groups.

Together, the partners have created a brand-new website at https://seftonsab.org.uk. The site contains advice and guidance for members of the public and professionals across Sefton. It has been developed as a central hub for all safeguarding resources across the Borough.

If people are struggling, or are concerned about someone they know, the website has details of lots of organisations they can get in touch with to receive support.

Speaking about the launch of the website, Michelle Creed, Independent Chair for the Sefton Safeguarding Adults Partnership Board said: “I am delighted that Sefton Safeguarding Adults Partnership Board’s website has launched in time for Safeguarding Adults Week so that we can raise awareness of this crucial issue.

“Our new website is incredibly easy to navigate and has a wealth of important information, whether you work with adults, have concerns about someone you know or are worried about your own situation.

“The Board works hard to oversee the effectiveness of the safeguarding work of partner agencies to help our residents to live free from fear or harm.”

Joan Coupe, Safeguarding Adults Partnership Board Manager added: “By launching the website during Safeguarding Adults Week, we recognise the importance of everyone understanding that abuse of adults will not be tolerated.

“We want to raise awareness of how everyone can be involved in safeguarding and to reinforce to all that we need to eradicate abusive practices.

“Our partners will be sharing useful information all week to make it easier to spot abuse and neglect as well as explaining how to seek support.”

Through Safeguarding Adults Week, which runs from Monday 21st to Sunday 27th November, the Board will be sharing messages to improve understanding of its role. These will be centred around the theme ‘Responding to Contemporary Safeguarding Challenges’. This covers topics such as elder abuse, self-neglect and domestic abuse in a technological society.

Cllr Paul Cummins, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care said: “I am very pleased that Safeguarding Adults Week is getting the support that it so richly deserves.

“We make it our priority to keep our residents safe all year round, but this week is a fantastic opportunity to highlight how we can protect others and ourselves.

“It can be hard to recognise signs of abuse or neglect and even harder to take action, but safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. We should always speak up if we see signs of abuse and neglect.”

Assistive technology roadshow comes to triumphant close

As its first round of roadshows draws to a close, Sefton Council’s Technology Enabled Care Solutions is celebrating its success.

Over 500 Sefton residents have been able to meet the team at events in Bootle, Southport, Crosby, Ainsdale and Maghull.

A room of people with a woman talking to a person in front of a Technology Enabled Care banner. Each roadshow showcased a range of assistive technology that residents can use to remain independent at home. They also provided information on how to access the equipment.

Now, Sefton Council is asking residents to complete a short survey to help them to improve the service in the future.

The survey is available on Your Sefton, Your Say and is open to everyone, from people who already use assistive technology to those who have not heard of it before. By asking people about their level of knowledge around the technology available and barriers that may prevent people from accessing the equipment, the team hopes to find new ways to support residents.

Technology Enabled Care Solutions is the name given to devices and services people can use to support themselves to live independently. These can range from Alexa apps that turn off lights without having to stretch for the switch, to sensors that detect if someone has fallen in their home.

With the current cost of living crisis, technology to help people save on their energy bills is also available. This includes smart meters that help to keep track of the energy used in homes and smart plugs, which can be controlled remotely or linked to a timer.

To help residents find solutions to help them at home, Sefton Council developed the online self-assessment and guidance tool Ask SARA in February. Ask SARA suggests a range of products and services to suit people’s needs and how to access them. People who are interested are also able to get in touch with the Technology Enabled Care Solutions team directly for further advice.

Councillor Paul Cummins, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care said:

“It’s wonderful to hear how well the Technology Enabled Care Solutions roadshows have gone so far. It has been a fantastic opportunity to showcase the technology available to enable our residents with additional needs to live independently.

“It is important that people in Sefton can make informed choices about their own health and wellbeing, and technology allows people to do so, while remaining independent.

“We’re always looking for ways to improve our services and provide the best support we can in Sefton and collecting the views of residents will help us to achieve that.”

To find out more, visit the Technology Enabled Care webpage at www.sefton.gov.uk/independentliving.

The survey can be found at https://yourseftonyoursay.sefton.gov.uk. There is an Easy Read format, and a hard copy can be provided if required.
