All aboard for free health checks on the Living Well bus at Bootle Strand this week

The ā€˜Living Well’ bus returns to Sefton this week, parking up outside Bootle Strand Shopping Centre on Friday 9 September, to offer free holistic health checks and first, second or booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

DecorativeThe bus will be parked at the shopping centre’s former H. Samuels retail unit on Stanley Road from 10:30am-4pm and residents can simply turn up and hop on board throughout the day, with no need to book.

Free health checks are available for residents aged 18 and over, which include a pulse check and blood pressure check, cholesterol and blood glucose check and a BMI check.

COVID-19 vaccines will be available for anyone who has not yet been vaccinated or who has missed their second jab or first booster dose. The autumn booster is not yet available. Eligible residents who are immunosuppressed who have not yet had their spring booster can also come along to get vaccinated, and vaccines for children aged five years and older will also be available.

Jan Leonard, primary care lead for Sefton at NHS Cheshire and Merseyside said: ā€œThe Living Well bus is out and about in the community again this week, making it easier than ever to get a health check up or to grab a jab if you’ve missed any of your COVID-19 vaccinations.

ā€œIt’s also ā€˜Know Your Numbers’ week this week – a great reminder to get your blood pressure checked. Six million people in the UK have high blood pressure and don’t know it, so getting it checked on the Living Well bus makes it quick and easy to ā€˜know your numbers’ and live a healthier life.

ā€œCOVID-19 is also still very much with us, so this is a perfect opportunity to get better protected and grab any missing jabs while you’re out and about shopping, or on your lunch hour.ā€

People can find out more about the COVID-19 vaccine, who is eligible, and to book an appointment online or find other walk-in vaccination sites on the NHS website: www.nhs.uk/covid-vaccination.

Free blood pressure checks available for Sefton Residents at Bootle Strand

Living Well Sefton are working with the charity Blood Pressure UK to promote blood pressure awareness during this Know Your Numbers Week.

Blood pressure measurement As part of the campaign, a blood pressure kiosk has been setup in Strand By Me in Bootle Strand and anyone is welcome to use this to check their blood pressure free of charge. The kiosk will also offer advice on how stay healthy and monitor blood pressure levels, and will be at the Strand until March 2023.

Blood Pressure UK is urging all adults (of all ages) to check their blood pressure, ideally with a home blood pressure monitor and at the same time reduce their salt intake. The more people test, enabling them to control their high blood pressure, the more premature deaths due to strokes, heart attacks and heart failure will be prevented. Especially since high blood pressure is largely symptomless and also one of the biggest single (and preventable) causes of death in the UK.

Despite nearly half (45%) of the UK population having had their blood pressure checked in the last 12 months, over half of these (56%) don’t know their blood pressure numbers and could be living with undiagnosed high blood pressure.

Substantial evidence supporting the use of home blood pressure monitoring has shown it gives a better reflection of blood pressure, as being tested in somewhere like a GP surgery or pharmacy, where patients might feel anxious, can affect the result.

What’s more, home testing enable patients to monitor their condition more easily in the long term. According to NHS England, regular home blood pressure monitoring across a population of 50,000 patients could prevent up to 500 heart attacks and 745 strokes over five years.

Margaret Jones, Sefton Council’s Director of Public Health said:

ā€œI would encourage Sefton residents to take part in Knowing Your Numbers and check their blood pressure. This is very important as high blood pressure doesn’t always have clear symptoms and can have a harmful effect on health and wellbeing. People can lower their blood pressure through being a healthy weight, eating less salt, eating more fruit and vegetables and doing more exercise.ā€

Guidelines on monitoring blood pressure are available free on the Blood Pressure UK website at www.bloodpressureuk.org/your-blood-pressure/how-to-lower-your-blood-pressure/monitoring-your-blood-pressure-at-home/

Sefton households can now apply for discretionary council tax energy rebate payment

Energy Rebate graphicSome households in Sefton that have not received a one-off £150 Energy Rebate payment can now apply online for a payment through a discretionary scheme.

Inviting

Sefton Council is inviting applications from residents of properties that have been excluded from the core scheme due to them not being liable for Council Tax.

This could include applicants who are directly responsible for energy costs but whose Council Tax is paid by someone else such as a housing provider, a charity or a non-resident owner. It also includes those who became liable for payment of Council Tax to Sefton Council on or after 2nd April 2022.

You can find out more and apply here.

Evidence

Completing their application will require them to provide evidence of occupation and direct payment of energy costs.

This means having their Tenancy Agreement, Rent Statement or Completion Statement and their energy bills.

They will also need to provide their Bank Sort Code and their Bank Account name and number.

Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regulatory Compliance and Corporate Services said: ā€œHaving already paid out nearly Ā£15 million to over approaching 106,000 Band A to D households in Sefton through the original scheme, we are targeting households that may have missed out.

ā€œThat includes those who do not pay their Council Tax directly, or who moved home during the qualifying period, who now have the opportunity to apply by visiting www.sefton.gov.uk/discretionaryā€.

Fixed fund

Sefton Council has a fixed fund available to allocate to Sefton households in need through discretionary funding. The application process will now be open until Monday 31st October.

It is also targeting Sefton households that are in need, as well as those that do not fall into the Council Tax bands A to D category

People living in Council Tax bands A to D will receive a further payment of £20 on top of the £150 they have already received making a total of £170. Residents granted a full Council Tax exemption, due to being severely mentally impaired will receive £170.

Additionally, the Council also plans to make a £170 payment to Council Tax-payers in band E to H properties who are in receipt of means-tested Council Tax Reduction at that property.

And, payments will be made to households with children that are in receipt of Council Tax Reduction. Amounts would be £20 for households with one or two children and £30 for those with three or more children.

Sefton Council to launch 30 Days of Sefton in Mind

On World Suicide Prevention Day Sefton Council is launching this year’s 30 Days of Sefton in Mind campaign.

Now in its sixth year, 30 Days of Sefton in Mind happens during the 30 days that fall between World Suicide Prevention Day on Saturday 10th September and World Mental Health Day on Monday 10th October.

Sefton In Mind LogoDuring this time, we will be promoting positive mental health across the Borough by highlighting the many services available across social media using the hashtag #SeftonInMind.

Various organisations that offer a range of mental health services will be tweeting out with the #SeftonInMind hashtag, and we will be sharing them to help spread awareness of the help available. Organisations from Samaritans to Listening Ear to Alzheimer’s Society will be participating.

The campaign is being undertaken with the hope it starts a conversation about stress or anxiety linked to various issues.Ā  For example, residents might be worried about financial hardship due to energy bills rising and prices going up in the shops as a result of the national cost of living crisis. Additionally, they may be concerned about issues regarding employment, social isolation or a lack of support. The campaign will provide information about local solutions to problems, such as financial support, friendship groups, or ideas for physical activities which can reduce feelings of isolation.

Led by Sefton Council, the campaign is supported by Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, NHS Cheshire and Merseyside and Sefton Council for Voluntary Service.

Cllr Paul Cummins, Mental Health Champion for Sefton Council said:

ā€œWith many still feeling the impact of COVID19, and facing hardship owing to the cost of living crisis, we need to promote ways to achieve and maintain positive mental health in Sefton now more than ever.ā€

ā€œAs we adapt to a world altered by the pandemic, levels of isolation, distress and financial anxiety have increased, and it is vital that we continue work together with our partners to provide services for people struggling with mental health and make sure that people know there is lots of support for them.ā€

People can get involved in 30 Days of Sefton in Mind and share your own posts on both Twitter or Facebook throughout the campaign using #SeftonInMind.
