Young Advisors Co-ordinator Georgia Ribbens with the Community Project of the Year
A project which enables the voices of young people in Sefton to be heard in community life has landed two top national awards.
Members of the Sefton Young Advisors (YAs) are celebrating after one of their team was honoured as national Young Advisor of the Year, and they also collected the Community Project of the Year award for an initiative with Sefton Council.
Trained consultants
The Young Advisors are managed by Sefton Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) and are trained consultants aged from 15-23 who help organisations to understand the interests of young people, and how to get their message across to them in a more youth-friendly way.
Both awards were presented at the recent AGM and conference of the national Young Advisors charity which was held online this year due to Coronavirus pandemic restrictions.
Youth proof
They also help agencies to âyouth proofâ the way they operate, and to attract and maintain the interest of young people in their work.
Isabelle Heeley has been honoured as the countryâs top Young Advisor.
According to the award citation, Isabelle Heeley was recognised as the countryâs top Young Advisor for her leadership and communication skills, her friendliness and her valuable input into the key projects the Young Advisors have worked on over the last 12 months.
Great example
Commenting on Isabella â who has recently started university in Korea whilst continuing to work as a YA remotely â Co-ordinator Georgia Ribbens said: âWe have been very lucky to have Bella on our team and she has set a great example for future members!â
Meanwhile, the Young Advisors received the second award for their consultation work as part of the Sefton Your Streets initiative. This involved gathering opinions from secondary students on issues around travelling to and from school safely.
Creativity
Sefton CVS Chief Executive, Angela White OBE, said: âTo win these two prestigious awards is a fantastic achievement and I would like to congratulate Isabella and the whole of the Young Advisors team on their success.
âAs their work on Sefton Your Streets has again shown, they are consistently proactive and creative in finding new ways to ensure that children and young people are given more of a say in decisions that are made about services that affect them.
âI am delighted that their creativity and hard work has been recognised at national level in this way and for Sefton Councilâs continued support of the YAs.â
Invaluable
Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Councilâs Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, said: âThe Sefton Young Advisors provide an invaluable service supporting young people across the Borough and ensuring their voices are heard.
âI would like to congratulate Isabella and the team as a whole on this national recognition and look forward to our continued work with them.â
Every Thursday from 3rd February, between 10am and 4pm, visitors to Southport Market will be able to enjoy a day of shopping, eating, drinking, and relaxing.
Held in the brand-new Extravaganza Space every Thursday, Southport Marketâs weekly artisan market will be a chance for local traders and creators to showcase their wares. Stalls will include local crafts, personalised products, candles, beauty products, jewellery, accessories, homeware, stationary, and more.
Showcase
Cllr Marion Atkinson, Sefton Councilâs Labour Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Skills, said: âThe new market event, held every Thursday in our Extravaganza space, provides traders with a fantastic opportunity to showcase their goods every week and for visitors to support local businesses.
âAnd as well as shopping for that unusual item or gift, people can also enjoy an international array of foods and drink on offer from the marketâs permanent outlets.
The first event will be held on Thursday 3rd February. Visitors attending the event have been advised to enter the Market via the Market Street entrance.
Strength to strength
Cllr Atkinson continued:
âSince the opening of the ÂŁ1.4 million refurbishment and repurpose of the old Southport Market building was completed in July 2021 the new Southport Market welcomed, and continues to welcome, guests locally, regionally and nationally, and the space has gone from strength to strength.â
People living in Bootleâs Linacre ward are being invited to apply for âgreenâ grants to improve the areaâs appearance.
Supported by the Linacre Ward elected members and funding coming from Sefton Council, the grants of between ÂŁ250 and ÂŁ1,000 are for new projects developed by local people. The scheme is managed by Bootle-based social enterprise Regenerus.
Apply
Any group of Linacre Ward residents can apply to the fund. They can be part of a community organisation working with volunteers, or just an informal group of friends and neighbours who want to work together on a local environmental project.
Organisers say that typical applications might come from groups wishing to hire skips for a community clean-up, or residents looking to create a new community garden on local wasteland.
Successful applications from previous rounds have included a project to improve one of the key gateways into Bootle, and a scheme to brighten up a local neighbourhood centre with new planters and hanging baskets.
Elsewhere in the town, funding created a community âpick your ownâ fruit, vegetables and herbs project in a local park, and helped people in recovery to clear overgrown plots of land while learning horticultural skills.
Prepare
Ruth Livesey of Regenerus said:ââWeâre hoping for a very good response to the latest round of funding which comes at a great time to prepare for this yearâs growing season.
âWeâre looking forward to receiving some high-quality applications that will make a significant improvement to the Linacre Ward environment.
âAt the same time, as previous rounds have shown, projects supported by the fund achieve the additional benefits of creating new friendships, promoting volunteering and getting residents more involved in looking after their neighbourhoods, especially young people.â
Forms
Fund guidelines and application forms can be downloaded from the Regenerus website – www.regenerus.org.uk.
The deadline for applications is Thursday 31st March.
Sefton says thanks for the incredible support shown for the Mayorâs Christmas Toy Appeal 2021
As 2021 came to a close, hundreds of people across Sefton demonstrated their kindness and community spirit by contributing to the Mayorâs Christmas Toy Appeal.
After another unbelievable year, many families were facing hardship, but thanks to the incredibly generous support of individuals and organisations across the Borough, children did not miss out on the special magic of the festive season.
A total of ÂŁ180 was raised through online donations so that volunteers could purchase gifts for children of all ages. Thousands of items, ranging from giant teddy bears to junior science kits, were also sent in meaning 548 children and families received gifts to open on Christmas Day.
Cllr Clare Louise Carragher, the Mayor of Sefton, said:
âThe outstanding support and generosity demonstrated by everyone across Sefton means that it has to be one of the best responses weâve ever seen in the history of the Mayorâs Christmas Toy Appeal.
The Mayor is writing personal letters of thanks to those across Sefton who went the extra mile to support the initiative. This year a â12 Days of Kindnessâ campaign was also launched to celebrate longstanding supporters of the appeal. These 12 organisations and individuals will also receive a certificate signed by the Mayor.
Cllr Carragher added:
âFor many of our families across Sefton, Christmas can be a time of real pressure and hardship and the incredible gestures of kindness and self-sacrifice from people right across our Borough has been inspiring. I would like to extend a personal thanks to every individual who has played their part in making this yearâs appeal the great success it has been.â
