Climate Champions creative writing coursesDuring sessions, children will hear about real life climate change concerns and writeĀ a short story of their own which will be then shared via social media, displayed in local libraries, presented on YouTube and at a special event at Liverpool Central Library (Covid-19 dependent) to coincide with the 26th UN Climate Change Conference in November 2021.

The Mersey Beatles bring number one hit-packed show to Southport

All 17 of The Beatles sensational UK Number One hits will be delivered in an all-new live show by the world’s favourite Liverpool-born tribute to the Fab Four.

The Mersey Beatles have played to sold-out audiences around the globe for more than 20 years and they are bringing their unmissable theatre show to The Atkinson, Southport, on Saturday September 4.

This will be one of the first full-capacity shows at the historic coastal venue since the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions.

And to celebrate the return of live music – and, of course, the hits of the greatest band of all time – The Mersey Beatles will play every Beatles’ chart-topping single in this magnificent two-hour show alongside more than 20 other classic songs.

So, get your dancing shoes ready as such smash-hits as From Me To You, She Loves You, I Want To Hold Your Hand to Lady Madonna, Get Back and Hey Jude will all be delivered in a truly authentic way.

Formed in Liverpool in 1999, The Mersey Beatles – Mark Bloor (John), Steven Howard (Paul), Craig McGown (George) and Brian Ambrose (Ringo), together with keyboard player and percussionist Tony Cook – were the resident Beatles’ band at the legendary Cavern Club between 2002-2012 – clocking up more than 600 gigs.

Since leaving The Cavern, The Mersey Beatles have toured the world many times over – winning legions of fans, including John Lennon’s sister Julia Baird and The British BeatlesThe Mersey Beatles tour imageĀ Fan Club who rate them as “The best Beatles tribute band aroundā€.

They exude the inner and outer spirit of the real thing, from the costumes, instruments, Scouse charm and, of course, that unmistakable era-defining, Liverpool-born sound. Their show wonderfully flows from the ā€˜Mop Top’ hits of Beatlemania, through the psychedelic creativity of Sgt Pepper to the melodic wonder of the Fab Four’s later work.

Steven said: ā€œWe can’t wait to play Southport – The Atkinson is a brilliant venue and the audiences are always up for a great night.

ā€œAs for everyone, this last year has been incredibly difficult. Our 2020 World Tour was postponed and not being able to go and play shows has been so frustrating.

ā€œBut live music is back at last and so we thought what better way to celebrate than to create the ultimate feel-good night by playing, for the first time, every Beatles’ Number One in the same show.ā€

Mark added: ā€œThat’s 17 chart-toppers – from 1963’s From Me To You to 1969’s The Ballad of John and Yoko – played totally live, as they should be, plus many, many, more Fab Four hits.

ā€œWe’ll play around 40 songs in the show so it’s going to be a brilliant night for Beatles fans. My advice is bring your dancing shoes!ā€

Final tickets for The Mersey Beatles at The Atkinson, on Saturday September 4, are available now from theatkinson.co.uk or by calling (01704) 533 333

Free App launched to help with increased COVID related drinking

The ā€˜Lower My Drinking’ app has been launched for residents of Sefton and the wider Cheshire and Merseyside area. It is free to download for anyone who lives or works in the area.

The launch of the app is part of a new campaign from the NHS and local councils in Cheshire and Merseyside. The campaign aims to help local people to reduce drinking to the recommended limit of 14 units a week or less. This is of particular importance in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic which saw a rise in harmful drinking and its consequences on people, communities and services.

Research from Alcohol Change UK indicates that 1 in 5 people (21%) have been drinking more often during lockdown, with frequent and daily drinkers further increasing the amount they drink. This matters as habits are formed quickly but can be hard to break.

Alcohol’s effects on mental health are particularly concerning, as are those of tensions in household, especially for those with children. Even more worryingly, the 2020 Office for National Statistic (ONS) data showed the highest rate of alcohol deaths since records began.

Margaret Jones, Director of Public Health at Sefton Council,Ā said: ā€œThe past 18 months have been incredibly challenging for all of us and statistics show that many people reported higher alcohol consumption during lockdown. We want people to be aware and mindful of their alcohol consumption so as not to impact negatively on their mental and physical health. The Lower My Drinking app allows people to see how much alcohol they consume and provides useful guidance. I would urge people in Sefton to download the app and take a positive step towards better health and wellbeing.ā€

Dr Paul Richardson, Deputy Divisional Medical Director at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: ā€œNow is the perfect time to make changes to drinking habits as routines change with more people returning to work and people now being able to see family and friends. It is the time to get our health back on track and feel better about ourselves as life slowly returns to normality.ā€

Fiona Taylor, chief officer at NHS South Sefton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and NHS Southport and Formby CCG, said: ā€œDrinking too much alcohol can increase your risk of serious health conditions, affect your quality of life and impact on relationships. If you feel like you want to lower your drinking, by a little or a lot, then download the app and make a change today.ā€

The app is an effective tool that helps individuals to set and achieve a drinking reduction goal. It allows people to track progress, identify their motivation for reducing their drinking as well as highlighting issues that could potentially cause someone to drink more than is healthy for them and gives a set of proven skills that can be used to address these.

It also offers practical steps that you can add into your weekly routine to help lower your drinking such as:

  • regularly reviewing your drinking habits
  • comparing your drinking levels every week to see how you score
  • using motivational techniques to help you on your journey to healthier drinking
  • setting yourself alerts to help you on your way to staying on top of your drinking levels

Lorna Smythe, 46, from St Helens knew she was drinking too much at the start of the first lockdown. ā€œI’m unsure if COVID caused me to drink more but it certainly didn’t help. There were a lot of things to worry about at home.”

Lower My Drinking positive story of mum who decreased alcohol consumption using free app

The mum of four has made changes to her drinking habits and says she can’t believe how good it feels. ā€œI’m more positive and have been able to do more things.Ā  I’ve even started Boxercise twice a week!Ā  I’m getting fitter and I absolutely love it.Ā  I’m in a much better place.ā€Ā

The arrival of the vaccine bus will make it easier for people living, working or out shopping near Bootle to come and get vaccinated, especially for those who may have struggled to get to a clinic further afield.
