‘Menopause and the workplace’ programme praised by University of Liverpool staff

Sefton Council has been leading the way in raising awareness on the menopause and its effects on the workplace.

The Local Authority’s dedicated, Active Workforce team works with local organisations across Sefton to improve the health and wellbeing of their employees.

Following the launch of Sefton’s new Menopause policy in 2020, Active Workforce set to help foster a more open and positive approach to the condition within workplaces across the Liverpool City Region.

Active Workforce have received praise from the University of Liverpool following the delivery of interactive and informative workshops around the menopause and its symptoms.

Joy Vogt, Executive Officer at University of Liverpool said, “I lead the University’s Menopause Support Network but believe it’s important that colleagues and managers from across the organisation are educated on this subject. The sessions delivered by Active Workforce have been informative and well received by all attendees.

“The sessions explain what menopause is, its symptoms, how it affects women and those around them, and importantly how to support colleagues in the workplace.

“There was a fantastic case study shared that really helped provide context and bring the information we’d learnt into reality. I was quite well informed about menopause due to my role in the support network, however this case study surprised me, and it was interesting to see how other colleagues responded.

“I feel the training has helped raise awareness of this topic within the organisation and I would love to see more sessions run over the course of the year, allowing more people to have the opportunity to attend. The sessions have given those who attended the tools and confidence to have conversations with colleagues, friends and relatives, which is a fantastic step forward.”

Active Workforce is Sefton Council’s award-winning health and wellbeing programme for businesses to help their staff to be active and healthy during working hours and reduce their absence through sickness and poor health.

The menopause workshops are delivered online and are available to employees of all organisations across Merseyside. The half-hour sessions focus on educating men, supporting managers, and preparing younger employees to recognise the symptoms. In addition, there is a monthly, hour-long menopause group, offering employees the chance to discuss their experiences with others in the same situation, and listen to topical speakers from the local area.

Sefton Council launches Domestic Abuse public consultation

Sefton Council, on behalf of Sefton’s Domestic Abuse Partnership Board, is in the process of completing a Domestic Abuse Needs Assessment to understand the needs of people who experience domestic abuse in Sefton.

The outcomes of the needs assessment will inform future service delivery and help target resources more effectively.

As part of this work, Sefton Council has launched a consultation survey to understand the needs of people who have experienced domestic abuse in Sefton.

Community Domestic Abuse Survey

The survey is a chance for people to tell us about their own experiences and about any services they may have used. This includes understanding any impact that the COVID-19 pandemic may have had on the delivery of services.

The survey can also be completed on behalf of other people, if you know someone who has experienced domestic abuse and tried to help them.

Cllr Trish Hardy, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, said: “As a Council, we want to make clear that there is no excuse for abuse and that we are completely committed to the elimination of domestic abuse from our society.

“We urge our residents to take part in the survey to ensure we have a full picture of the current services across Sefton and the needs of survivors and children to inform future planning.”

The survey can be found online at yourseftonyoursay.sefton.gov.uk and will close on 4 March 2022.

If you are a Sefton resident and are experiencing domestic abuse, or believe someone you know is, support is available.

Coastal Contamination in Sefton

An oil release offshore means small tar balls may wash up on the Sefton coastline in the coming days and weeks.

A Sefton Council spokesperson said: “We have been made aware of a limited quantity of hydrocarbons (oil) being released off off the North Wales coast.

“Owing to currents and weather forecasts in the next 24 hours, we may see deposits, in the form of ‘tar balls’ washing up on our coastline as a result of this incident.

'Tar ball' sighting along shoreline

“We would also stress that removal of this waste should only be carried out by professionals, and we ask that members of the public do not attempt to remove any ‘tar ball’ deposits.

“While this type of incident is rare, Sefton Council and its partner agencies have robust plans in place to ensure any contamination or disruption to our coastline is minimal.

“We will be supporting ENI UK Limited’s clean up teams in the coming weeks to remove any potential contamination.

“Posters have been erected along our coastline to inform visitors to our beach of this issue and we would ask that dogs are kept supervised at all times.

“If you come across these deposits, in the first instance please call 0151 934 2961 to report this to the Rangers at Green Sefton.”

Happy Chinese New Year from all at Sefton Council

We want to wish all Sefton residents a Happy Chinese New Year. People across the world will be celebrating the arrival of New Year at the start of February 2022.

Also known as Lunar New Year or Spring festival, festivities take place for just over two weeks to mark the transition into the next year, from Tuesday 1 February until Wednesday 15 February.

There are twelve Chinese zodiac animals, each of which is linked to certain characteristics and elements, and they rotate each year. In 2022, we welcome in the Year of the Tiger. In Chinese culture, the Tiger is a valued animal because of its kind, adventurous and enthusiastic nature.

Today (Tuesday 1 Feburary) The Atkinson will illuminate in red in honour of the new year signifying good fortune and joy to everyone.

Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, Cllr Hardy, said: “I’d like to wish everyone a Happy Chinese New Year. Merseyside is home to Europe’s oldest Chinese community and the Lunar New Year is a wonderful opportunity for people to come together in celebration of our Chinese community.”

Cllr Trish Hardy shares support for 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based violence campaign

Cllr Trish Hardy,  Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities shares support for 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based violence campaign.

The issue of gender-based violence has never been more pertinent. In the last 12 months there have been several high-profile cases of violence against women and girls, including the tragic death of 12-year-old Ava White.

Friday 10 December marked the International Day for Human Rights, as well as the end of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence. The campaign has been an opportunity for us to raise awareness and learn more about the different forms of violence faced by women and girls.

These include, domestic violence and abuse, rape and harassment, as well as more hidden harmful practices like ‘honour’-based abuse, female genital mutilation and forced marriage.

As a Council, we want to make clear that there is no excuse for abuse and that we are completely committed to the elimination of gender-based violence from our society.

I want to take this opportunity to provide an update on the work being led by the Sefton Domestic Abuse Partnership Board, a multi-agency partnership, which has been established as part of the new Domestic Abuse Act legislation.

To ensure we have a full picture of the current services across Sefton and the needs of victims and children to inform future planning, we have commissioned a Domestic Abuse Needs Assessment.

The outcomes from the Assessment will be used to review Sefton’s Domestic Abuse Strategy early next year.

We as a Council are proud to have been a part of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence. We are committing to keeping the issue at the forefront for not just 16 days, but 365 days of the year, as we continue strengthening our response to it in all its forms.

Sefton Council does not tolerate any kind of domestic abuse and we have processes in place to help safeguard people and help ensure it does not happen. Where it does, we will provide help, support and guidance to our residents and families, as well as challenge those perpetrating the abuse.
